Some fantastic football played over the past few days since it began.

Last night I watched Japan vs Syria - WHAT A FUCKING MATCH!!!

Japan the strongest side in Asia up against the underdogs Syria.

End to end football for 90 minutes ... breathtaking stuff, the passion from the Syrian fans in the stands was something else.

Japan take the lead through Makoto Hasebe after an incredible goal mouth scramble.... Syria grab a ridiculously controversial penalty - Japan's keeper sent off ... 5 minutes of scuffles ... one player on the Syrian bench couldn't watch the penalty, was lying down on the ground head in his heads, and crying!!! Syria put it away.

5 minutes later another penalty 50-50 call .... Keisuke Honda, who else, steps up holds his nerve and buries it.

I recommend you watch the highlights!

AFC Asian Cup 2011 M12 Syria vs Japan

Caught the match too. Happened to be my first for the tournament. Was pleasantly surprised by the endeavour of the Syrians and the frantic pace of the game.

The Syrians deserve to be applauded.

Not only did they stick it to kings of Asia, Saudi Arabia, but they then came out and tried to do the same to Japan.

Jordan also have been great to watch.

Tonight should be a cracker.... Australia vs. South Korea.

The power and strength of the Aussies vs the guile and craft of the little Koreans.

India's qualified for it after 24 years. Only to be put in with South Korea, Australia, and Bahrain. Bloody hell, couldn't they give us a shot at winning one game at least?

Incidentally, the Indian national team is managed by Hodgson's best mate Bob Houghton. He's done quite an admirable job.

Yup!

Only 4-0 loss to Australia, after many predicted a cricket score 🙂

Credit to India they came out and played 4-4-2 and didn't try to play the game with everyone behind the ball ... nor did they pick up a single yellow card.... AND.... Sunil Chetri should have scored that 1v1 in the last 5 minutes.

And their keeper, Subrata Pal, how good was he!!!

Little ? Koreans are generally amongst the tallest nation in South East / North East Asia - many of them are 6' + (1.85m) and on average definitely not little (unlike the Japanese for example) !!

lol I know .... was merely trying to get my point across about the physical superiority of the Aussies 😉

Saudi's coach sacked after losing the first game, and the interim coach loses the next one!

Not that I want to laugh, but football in the Gulf is so ridiculous sometimes.

Japan's captain Hasebe saying that there's no way what-so-ever Japan can win the tournament, the way they're currently playing. Understandable. Japan's been pretty much poo for the last several games.
How's Australia looking as a team right now?

The only thing Japan need to worry about is their central defence.

They have their 2 starting centre backs out injured at the moment - Tulio Tanaka & Nakazawa - these two are immense for them.... soon as they get back in, they'll be improved greatly.

As for Australia - I don't see us winning it.

We are a one trick team at the moment... pump it long and see if Cahill can head it at goal or down to Kewell.

They are capable of playing much better, need to give the ball to Brett Holman more (AZ Alkmaar) - he's a player with top dribbling quality and when he gets on the ball, we are a different side - just ask the Serbians 😉

Australia 1 - 1 South Korea

Probably a fair result in the end.

South Korea really impressed me with their neat build up play and skill... it's good to see some of their K-League based players being able to match it at international level.

Cha Du Ri is a fucking machine for them, a beast of a player!!! Incredible fitness bombing up and down that right flank ... he was everywhere for them... putting the crosses in attack, and making last ditch goal saving tackles in their box.

To be fair..he is there on merit. It seems he has rid himself of his injury woes too. Moving away from LFC has worked out well for him on a personal level.

Completely disagree.

Yes he is not that player we knew he was before, but he's still very handy - and ppl can say whatever they want about him, but he still has plenty to offer to the national side.

He could have easily had 2 or 3 goals last night, and more often than not he does bury those efforts still.

If you watched the game you will notice how Kewell was the player singled out by the Koreans... every time he got the ball there were 2 or 3 players around him in an instant.

And yeah we do have a lack of talent coming through but credit to the guy, he's more committed than ever to the national side.

To be fair..he is there on merit. It seems he has rid himself of his injury woes too. Moving away from LFC has worked out well for him on a personal level.

People forget the type of injuries he suffered, and the continuous mistreatment of these injuries by his doctors.

At Galatasaray he's found a good balance between skillful & physical football - one where he can cope and prolong his career, while still playing at a respectable level. His wife and kids still live in England too ... the man makes many sacrifices for the sake of his career, and it goes greatly unnoticed.

No one here cares how well he's done for Australia.

He was useless for us.

Not his fault, but there it is.

I'm not entirely convinced it wasn't (and I say that as someone who was made up about signing him to start with). On KT we were warned at the time by one or two fellow Reds who lived in Yorkshire that Kewell had a reputation thereabouts for being mardy, pleasing himself whether or not to bother from one week to the next. Was that also due to factors beyond his control? These things are rarely if ever as simple as the media make them out to be, and I don't suppose Kewell was entirely to blame for how things went for him at Liverpool, but I simply don't believe he was just a victim of circumstance either.

Well there will always be a disagreement on Kewell.

At the end of the day, he was ok for us - his time with us was hampered by injuries; that is the main thing to remember.

At least he didn't fuck off and end up at United like a certain fuckwit did.

70 mins - > Iran 1 - 0 N. Korea

- Ansarifard with the goal for Iran, if it remains like this Iran will progress through to the next round.

Final Score, Iran 1 - 0 North Korea

Iran progress.

North Koreans off to the labour camps for disappointing Kim Jong-Il
