VILLA will do everything in their power to resist a reported summer bid from Manchester United for Ashley Young.
Sources in the north west suggest Sir Alex Ferguson has identified the emerging England star as his top outfield target.
Villa are determined to hang on to the Young who is contracted to the club until the summer of 2012.
But they could struggle to fend off the Old Trafford giants if Young demands a move at the end of the season. Randy Lerner and Gerard Houllier are prepared to risk Young running down his contract and leaving for free.
And if Young does force the issue, Villa would hold out for more than the £15 million offer United are rumoured to be preparing.
Even though his contract is ticking down, the club believe there is enough rival interest in Young to demand a higher transfer fee.
Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City have also been linked with a move for Young who will decide whether to sign a bumper new Villa deal in the summer.
Houllier made Young captain for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Blackpool and hopes the armband will bring out the best in him.
The winger-cum-second-striker was involved in controversy when referee Howard Webb failed to award him a late penalty. “He’s one of the players who is the most targeted in terms of fouls, you can check on that,†said Houllier.
“He gets a lot of fouls on him because he’s swift, he’s quick.
“To be fair, maybe the only decision I thought is not totally right is probably the penalty claim that we had at the end.â€
Houllier hopes the responsibility of skippering Villa will cut out some of the petulant behaviour that undermines Young’s game.
“Moaning doesn’t help,†he said. “Moaning and whining and whinging are for weak players – when you’re strong you just get on with it.
“He’s the captain, he can’t moan. I think that helps. That’s why I kept him on. I know he was a bit tired.
“But I thought wit the responsibility of the armband he did well.â€
