Aser Illarramendi

He's a very good player, I'd be surprised if he was for sale or if we got him that cheap. Maybe we should look at palming them sterling, for illarramendi and some cash.

Illarramendi at the base, and Milner and Henderson ahead has the makings of a very nice midfield. Make it happen.

We haven't had a good midfield in ages.

My issue is will he provide the steel we need in the middle? Could he handle the likes of yaya toure, matic and fellaini? Can he impose himself in the middle and boss the midfield? I don't see him as that player and that is the player we need.

Whilst I agree we do need physical presence in Midfield, Milner and Henderson should provide a decent amount of that.

As will Illaramendi.

He's been put up for sale by Real and I think the fee mentioned a few months back was about 16-18 mill.

Could be a great signing this. He was immense for Sociedad and Spain u-21s.
Shouldnt have moved to Real but thats another story.

Yep, I'd sign him. Rafa will surely throw us out some scraps from Madrid.

Wow Milner is only 5"9, I didn't realise he was such a midget, I always thought he was over 6ft.

United won 3 titles with Carrick as their midfield lynchpin. Barca have built a dynasty with Busquets at their midfield base, and we had our best midfield in 20 years with Alonso at its base.

Physicality is not required, as long as you have strong positioning, game intelligence, and wonderful technique. We've had poor imitations of such players in Lucas and Allen, but if someone is genuinely good, then they'd have no problems beasting it in the PL at all.

Can't really say if Illarra is genuinely good though. Haven't seen him play much.

Illarramendi was 'meant' to be Xabi's replacement/protege. Not sure why that's not happened. He's more of a Xabi than a Mascherano though. Not sure how Lucas, Allen, Hederson, Milner, Coutinho, Can, Illarramendi*, Kovacic*, Firmino* would all get games though, would make sense to let 1-2 go.

Anyone who actually scores goals regularly!!!!

But which of those targets want to come to Liverpool? Lacazette would be great, but he said he wants CL Footy. Higuain and Benzema are also unlikely to want to come to us (for the very same reason). So who's left?
Austin
Remy
A 28 year old South American from Spain
A unknown from Russia trying to escape racists

I haven't spoken to any of them so couldn't tell you. But it's surely very clear - we need to invest heavily in the very best striker we can get. Anyone else is secondary. Maybe it's quite different on the inside but from here it looks as though we're spending what cash we have on defenders and midfielders, with whatever is left being offered to another Aspas-quality forward. Priorities, priorities.

Alonso had mascherano next to him who provided plenty of steel and protected him. Can't remember who else was in the man utd team so i can't comment. Barca are a one off and can hardly be used for any comparison. Most successful teams in the world make sure they have that midfielder who imposes himself in the middle.. Our midfield has a habit of getting bullied by the opposition. We need someone in there that can impose himself and run the midfield.

United won something like 72% of the games Carrick started this season. Compared to 37% without him.

Its utter bollocks to say you dont need steel though, it may not be a constant necessity, but there were games when Alonso partnered Gerrard and we were made to look like chumps by players of the standard of Savage and Tugay.

We need options, horses for courses and all that..

You need steel, but not at the expense of guile. Henderson, Milner and Illarramendi should have enough steel - that's the point.

And Alonso and Gerrard struggled not because of a lack of steel (Gerrard was probably the steeliest midfielder of his generation!) - it was because Gerrard never had the positional nous to play CM.

But it worked when Alonso had Masher, because he chased and pressured everyone around him, allowing Alonso the freedom to play.

I would say our midfield's greatest ailment is its lack of ability to control the pace of the game. Lucas and Allen are in theory supposed to do that, but they aren't good enough.

Can, Henderson and Milner are all fairly physical players, and more than capable of holding their own against the likes of Yaya or Matic or whoever.
