This will be Spearing's 4th consecutive start and hopefully he's beginning to get used to the big time and playing in front of big crowds. He was brilliant against Sunderland and City and I believe he was as poor as our other players against WBA.

I wish he had a better players alongside him than Lucas but he doesn't so against the Arse he'll have his work cut out.

However, there is an outside chance that Spearing is a genuine first team player and I'd fucking love him to have a stormer against Wilshere and Fabregas and if he does and we win I think many of us will have to consider him for inclusion in our predictions for our line-ups for the 1st game of next season.

Spearing = The New (white) Makelele?

Re: PRE-MATCH THREAD: Arsenal vs Liverpool

Some of the replies to my post about Spearing are laughable. I am just suggesting that so far Spearing has surprised many of us and has not looked out of place and there's an OUTSIDE CHANCE we could have to rethink our starting line up next season.

My point..........................He obviously still has much to prove but so far he has impressed and now on Sunday he gets to pit his wits against Fabregas/Wilshere which is a top CM. IF (I'll repeat this for the terminally dim) IF he excels in this game and is plays a pivotal role in a win at The Emirates then we could all soon be building our hypothetical team line-ups next season around the pocket dynamo.

He could of course be run-ragged on Sunday but SO FAR I'm very impressed with him and think he deserves this chance.

Yup people are laughing because of your daft comparison him to Makelele. I never rated Makelele before and i don't fucking care about what you going to say about him.

First of all, Spearing isn't going to be the next Makelele or Redondo or Mascherano. Secondly, Spearing didn't play as a defensive midfielder. Lucas is. Thirdly, Spearing is in the team BECAUSE Gerrard is out injured. Finally, why don't you go take a walk.

Pesam might have gone a bit over the top there, but the point was still valid, Spearing had good games against Sunderland AND City and hasn't looked out of place at all. And for the record he was bang on about the West Brom game, everyone was shit, so why single him out for criticism?

I know it's unfashionable to like the lad. He's ugly, 5ft and didn't get snapped up from Spain, so he hasn't had the privilege of being lauded as the second coming for the last two years by loads of people who haven't seen him play, but come on. This is like Crouch syndrome. He doesn't look like a footballer so therefore isn't.

I don't mind Lucas, but from what we've seen so far he (Spearing) looks like he has the 'potential' to be a more rounded player, more aggressive and tenacious anyway.
[/quote]

Nobody on here - at least in this thread - has suggested that Spearing was the one responsible for the West Brom debacle so commenting on that is pointless IMO.

The laughable point on this is that there was no suggestion Spearing "could" turn into an alright player it was rather the inference that, somehow, our weakness was in Lucas dragging down Spearing......... if only we had someone of Spearing's quality to partner him in the middle.

It's all about opinions Wiz and last week about 25% of posters who voted voted for Spearing ahead of Lucas, so even if it's not a overwhelmingly popular opinion it's still not laughable. Many of us believe Lucas to be a very poor player.

I dunno mate, if a political party scored 75% of the vote it would be termed a "landslide" of enormous proportions and a mandate for them to do anything they wanted. ???

The reality is that I don't mind Spearing - he's got the bite and agression of a DM that I quite like seeing and certainly more than Lucas has. His issue is that thats all he's got to his game - thus far. Maybe he's going to improve over the next few years - the interesting part is how much patience fans like you will have for him as opposed to Lucas.

Aye, we'll find out soon enough - my overriding feeling is he's not going to be good enough as a long term option for a regular start but he's impressed me so much so far that I'm now very keen to be proved wrong and there's a chance he could be our new Sammy Lee.

I had a tenner on City yesterday at 3/1! 😉

I think 4/1 is a decent bet, but I feel this match could go either way. Both sides have vulnerable defences at the moment. Carra may need to nobble the likes of Nasri and Walcott. The referee is André Marriner.
