Really interesting write-up from Phil Neville here :

Rodgers was clever because he knew Arsenal like to play with just one holding midfielder, in this case Mathieu Flamini. Liverpool capitalised by having Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho come in from wide and sit either side of Flamini, so he did not know who to pick up.

Since Sterling was pushed up front for the first time in Liverpool's defeat by Manchester United last weekend they have looked a far greater threat and much more like the team they were last season. Regardless of the problems in other areas of their team, getting that sort of intensity back in their attack on a regular basis is the key to a successful second half of the season. Once they have Daniel Sturridge back fit, it will make a massive difference, but using Sterling in this way means they are definitely heading in the right direction.

I thought it was mad the way Borini got sent off, I'm not sure it was justified, yeah he'd had previous and had been warned by the ref. But it was still a bit harsh, especially as the ref seemed to have such a low grasp of English.

I mean yeah, Borini hasn't brought much to the squad, he constantly follows Balotelli about complains about him, rather than just playing his own game. But that doesn't mean he needed to be dealt with so harshly. It's not what the site, I mean team, is about.

Borini should have got off, it's was a yellow card so a no brainer. The problem I have with it was that Flamini's was a blatant second yellow as well but he got let off because he'd have got a red, why the double standards?

Yeah, the double standard was what got me.

I was annoyed cos it was fucking stupid, but I was equally as annoyed with the shit he got before he was sent off, he did fucking well.

Yeah, he's not good enough in a an ideal world. Yeah I want better, but he opened up space for Sterling & kept at least one defender busy up front whilst Sterling ran from deep.

He's what we've got thanks to management failing, & I don't get slating him just cos you don't like him when he's doing what he can.

It's academic now cos he's almost certainly a goner, but the point stands for other players too.

Lucas for example. I think we can & should get better at dm, & his flaws piss me right off.

However he's our best dm without doubt, yet some people slag him off & don't want him to play. I just don't get it.

How long is left on Borini's contract? I reckon his agent has told him he's never getting paid 90k anywhere else for the rest of his life and to run it down no matter what. Then on a free he can negotiate much better terms with his next club.

It's not his fault the club massively overpaid him. But now we've got this legacy of bullshit which means Sterling is well within his rights to turn his nose up at 75k.

I'd like to think he's staying to try to earn his place, but that's wishful thinking, that 90k a week is well the reason.

I believe Borini is on £60,000 a week. However, one other thing to consider is that the deal with Roma came with certain add-ons relating to appearances, which would amount to an extra £1m if activated, so I suppose that might be another reason for the reluctance to play him.

Just found this. Not sure how accurate it is, but the ones I already knew matched well enough...

If those wages are true, minus Borini, Assaidi and Can, those wages seem pretty reasonable. Gerrard on £140k is a huge amount, but you have to remember he is basically the club, he must have huge commitments outside of the football.

The thing about those wages is when you add them up and multiply by 52 you get to £80m

But in the accounts the wages are around £130m

What gives?

I'm guessing it excludes bonuses, and there's also paying the non-playing staff at all levels. Board members, scouts and so on. That won't come to the 50m difference, but it'd get a bit closer.

I think Markovic will shine next season.

He's got shitloads of talent, but still looks of in terms of match fitness, possibly due to the pace of the league etc.
