Clear handball that, should have been a penalty. That aside,

-Spearing is not Liverpool quality, not even sure how "good" he would be in a Championship side.

-Babel might be the most frustrating LFC player I have ever had the displeasure to watch, just puts his head down and runs right at defenders only to lose the ball 95% of the time.

-Well pleased with Degen, seriously surprised at his pace. He makes Usain Bolt look like Mark Viduka.

-You can see the class of Aquilani even in this brief cameo appearance, can't wait to see him get a decent run out in the league.

All in all, decent performance. The defending was a little lackadaisical at times and we paid for it. We had some excellent build ups going forward though. Something to build on.

As I've said before about Degen, when he plays he's generally fine. It's the injuries that's the problem obviously and I'm surprised so many people are "surprised".

Poor defensive effort. If you thought Lucas and Mascherano are poor and lack creativity, then I would rather watch paint dry. That's how bad Plessis and Spearing were. That's where we lost the game. Aquilani showed soem good touches. Degen really surprised me today.

He looked decent the last time he played, too.

But his transfer has been a bloody disaster.

ngog continues to improve.

dissapointed that we're out as it's a great way to keep the second stringers competitive.

oh yeah, spearing is wank.

Agree with all of that. I would add these though;

Rafa needs to learn how to make a change before 65-75 minutes and not take his best players of when he does. Babel should have been off after 55 minutes for Benayoun not N'gog at 72 minutes, grrrr.

Plessis was as good as, if not better, than Spearing for the time they shared on the pitch, but neither are Liverpool quality (they were a far cry from Ramsey and Merida).

Cavalieri is a flappy bastard, but he actually has decent hands when he keeps his head.

It's about time we decided upon a formation that gets the best out of our players and that they are all comfortable with.

well at least it wasn't as embarrassing as it was in previous league cup encounters with arsenal's youth.

how is it we end up with youth like spearing and plessis? neither will make it and i can't believe we just gave plessis a new contract.

degen and voronin did play well, infact its the best degen has played for us.

I agree with Yoshi, re Spearing and Babel.

Degen can be useful going forward - he's strong and fast. However at times he reminded me of Baros - running blindly into dead allies. He needs to work on his game intelligence, as the physical attributes seem to be there (assuming he's not injured). And of course, he is a full back and full backs have to defencd too, which at times he seemed to have forgotten.

Skrtel was a real worry - he used to be better last season, and I really hope he regains that form soon as we do need him.

I really like Ngog- the lad has the potential to become a good striker for us.

Voronin try harder than he normally does in his cameo appearances, but still something is missing, and I don't think he's gonna make it for us at his age.

We need to see more from Aquilani, although it is clear that the lad has class.

I also thought that all in all it was a decent performance and a great game to watch. I don't really give a shit about losing this game, and my only regret about getting knocked out of that competitiion is that it could have given our second string some more chances to play on center stage.

I'm not surprised that he could play but I've never really noticed the acceleration he's got from a jog to 95% or so; it was seemless.

Agree with original comment that it was a hand ball; not intentional but put his arms up while turning which effectively blocked the shot.

Not so sure on Aquilanis performance. The statement he is class would stem either from his time at Roma or his 20m price tag; if it stems from the fact he made one good pass from about 7 then either we've got some problems or the original poster is easily impressed.

If Spearing makes it he'll have to be a destructive, crunching DM - cause there is nothing else to his game.

I suppose the only positive is that Plessis managed to break the Guinness World Record for most sideways and backwards passes by a footballer in a competitive game.

Neil Lennon is said to be distraught.

The flick to Skrtel near our box was quite "classy".

I thought we were the better team tbh, a number of players were making great efforts and i include in that Spearing and Plessis.

Generally our passing was very good we just lacked a killer edge up front, apart from one or two magical moves by Arsenal I think most of the best play came from our team, we harried more and were unlucky to lose IMHO.

What the fuck game the commentators were watching i couldnt tell you!! At on epoint in the second half Arsenal had an attack and it was possibly the first time they had had the ball for about 5 minutes and he near shot his load extolling the excellent Arenal pressure!

It was extremely biased, despite having two or three excellent chances in the match and bossing a large amount of the play with as many kids/second teamers on as they did we were "plucky" .... fucking terrible bias.

Degen was excellent, even Voronin and Babel were busy ( Babel should have scored on at least one occasion, when will that cunt ever get any luck??) Spearing cant shoot for shit Plessis looked quite tidy An absolute STORMER from Insua, Poor mistake by Skrtel for their second, Cavalieri flapped a couple of times.... Aquilani is going to be a great additon , Ngog played well.... and i just wish Degen had been fit last year because it looks like we could have saved ourselves twenty million on Jonhson ... i nearly even applauded Voronin when he came off as he was trying so hard.

LFCTV is entertaining tonight: first, because someone - his mam? - has finally told Les Lawson he isn't actually a player, so he's not got the LFC shirt on, and second because Neil Mellor is looking at Les as if he's been cornered by the nutter on the bus. It's quite therapeutic.

Said more or less the same in the ratings thread.

Very pacey player runs into dead ends and then loses the ball. Hmmmm.... I'm sure I've heard people complaining about that somewhere...?

I think it's nice to know that atleast one of our young strikers is getting better and it's not the one that was said to be the next Thierry Henry, can't believe that used to be something credible to say 🙁

Nothing yet but bewildering sights about Degen: very fast when he arrived, then injured all season. Then wretchedly poor defensively this pre-season, then injured. Then tonight fast again. No idea what kind of player he can be if he's ever really fit.

Personally i liked quite alot about our performance tonight, i also couldn't give a shit we are out, i only wanted us to win to fuck off the London press a bit.

This from the fella promoting Championship quality youth above our first teamers just a day ago. You should try and keep track of your wind-ups.

Lol.

Who was he talking about?

If we had one decent centre midfielder playing from the start, we would have won that game. The decision to partner such an in-experienced duo of Spearing & Plessis away from home against a side whose strongest asset is their midfield passing and moving was beyond me. They were completely overrun.
There is no point playing 4 forwards when your have a midfield that can't win the ball or supply any service to them. Yes it was ONLY the Carling Cup but it was a chance to build more confidence and momemtum. We have a mountain to climb in the Champions League and we're playing catch up in the EPL yet somehow Rafa deems it ok to play that side tonight and expect to win.

What central defenders, who were fit, did you expect?

Rafa should've played Kuyt or Yossi instead of Voronin.

There was a lot of room in between their midfield and defence, and that Eastmond kid was pretty much anonymous.

They would've been able to use that space a lot better than Voronin.

So you mean we could've played Kuyt twice? Cool 🙂

The team of Carras may well be a possibility then?
