Lucas is a good player. It's pointless arguing with you on this, because you've your mind made up on his performance before a ball's kicked in any game he's about to play.

Ryan, it's statements like these that can tarnish any credibility you may ever seek in a football forum.

Or perhaps it suggests he's willing to consider a players objective merits without being unduly swayed by the teams current malaise.
There's no way Lucas has been our worst performer this season and in my opinion he's progressed some more from last term. He appears stronger on and off the ball, his movement is good, he makes himself available and his passing is accurate (if not incisive enough at times).
The main criticism of him is that he can't do an "Alonso" and dictate the pace of the game or spray 40 yard passes about. That's not Lucas' fault - he's simply a different kind of player (Alonso doesn't have the pace of Lucas either).
Lucas is more of a holding midfielder in the mould of Flamini for Arsenal a couple of seasons back. He might not have Masher's "bite" either, but then Masher doesn't potentially offer as much offensively (although he's improving that aspect of his game).
The biggest problem with Lucas is that he's being asked to play alongside Masher, game after game. Sure, against the big teams they form a destructive core in midfield to prevent our rivals playing their natural game - and we do well for it. But against the majority of teams we face who park the bus we're left with two deep lying, protective midfielders, and little creativity. The gap between midfield and attack is simply too big.
I'm actually looking forward to seeing Aquilani alongside Lucas almost as much as alongside Masher. I think we'll begin to appreciate what he brings to the team more so then - providing Aquilani proves able enough offensively.
I'm not saying we can't do better than Lucas - we can - but he's certainly a lot better than most give him credit for. He's continuing to improve (yet still young) in a struggling team, playing alongside a player that doesn't complement his own strengths.
