Which was entirely foreseeable, IMO.

It's been obvious for months that Juve were not prepared to stump up the cash for him at the end. They've got Aquilani for free for a year and we got Poulsen for £5M. We're mugs, mate.

We've been that for a hell of a long time.

That was unbelievably terrible business. If Hodgson wanted Poulsen, why didn't he save 5 million and ask for him on loan in exchange for Aquilani?

It's possible we did ask and got knocked back. Amazing as it may seem now, Poulsen seems to have been highly rated by at least some of the Juve fans (if not necessarily the management), who might well have been distinctly unimpressed if Poulsen had been allowed to go without fetching a fee.

Alberto Aquilani is ready to fight for the Premier League title given that his hopes of staying in Italy seem over.

The midfielder spent last season on loan at Juventus, but the Turin giants have sent him back to Liverpool after refusing to take up their option to sign him outright.

“Liverpool are a side of great importance,” his agent Franco Zavaglia told Radio Sportiva. “They have got over the problems they had with their previous owners.

“Today they are a club who could win the Premier League. Their minimum objective is to get back into the Champions League.”

Aquilani has been linked with other Serie A sides – such as Napoli and Milan – but the chances of a switch to Italy before the window closes seem slim.

“I don’t know if this market will give him an opportunity to join a different Italian club,” continued the representative.

“It’s sad to see so many of our players who have to go and play their football abroad,” added Zavaglia.

“Alberto wanted to remain in the peninsula, but that wasn’t possible.”

King Kenny rates Aqua. If he remains I predict Aqua will love it here and will have a fantastic season in KK's pass and move Liverpool. I salivate at seeing him link up with the likes of Suarez, Gerrard and Adam.

When did Kenny indicate that?

And Aqua and his agent can fuck off. You've wanted to stay in Italy for months, now you're back so all of a sudden want to stay in Liverpool. Fuck off.

King Kenny:

"There's a distinct possibility he could be back here. He's a quality player," he told reporters.

"He got off to a bad start here with his injuries and never really got going after missing preseason.

"He went out on loan and has done very well over there. If he was to come back here, for me that would be like a new face coming in."

What else is he going to say in such circumstances? None of that erases the public statements the player's made, as described (rightly) by the Saint, about preferring to stay in Italy.

What else is Aquilani going to say in such circumstances? We're the ones who decided to ship him out on loan as soon as we got him fit.

What else is he going to say? Nothing. He's going to keep his head down and work hard but keep all his options open - if it's genuinely the case that he doesn't mind what happens, which unfortunately it clearly isn't.

is it just me or has Judge seemed a tad obsessed with Aquilani's apparent determination to stay in Italy. i mean, yeah - we get it. he'd rather stay in italy. that much is clear.

but does that mean he had to be unchained, kicking and screaming, from the grounds of his turin mansion and dragged on a plane back to england? isn't the likelihood that, yes, given the choice, he'd rather stay in Italy - his homeland - but if that's not possible than he'll just GET ON WITH IT and try to do a job for us.

i really think this point about him preferring Italy is way overblown.

Not obsessed, peter, just a little surprised that some of us keep paying no attention to that point and insisting regardless that Aquilani will do fine if he comes back. I have little doubt that he'd "try to do a job for us", but forgive me for not finding that an enticing prospect.

Would people prefer him to have turned back up here and said I fucking hate it here and wish I was back in Italy playing for whoever? Well he hasn't. He has come back for pre season, got his head down, gotten on with getting fit with the rest of the squad, and said pretty much the best he could about possibly staying without sounding like Rooney or some other bellend spouting shit when you know it isn't true. Why don't people just wait and see what happens at the beginning of the season when he pulls on the jersey. If he doesn't look as though he's up for it then, then fine, get on his back, but until then I think people should cut him a bit of slack.

If it becomes clear that he's staying, yes. Until then it's a perfectly legit subject for debate.

He's coming back to a different club to the one he left. He also agreed to join us in the first place and, from what I can gather, by no means forced a move to Italy.

He may well prefer the sunshine of Turin, but I do not believe this will affect his performances for us. He'll do great.

There are reports Liverpool could send unsettled Alberto Aquilani to Sunderland for £14m after his move to Juventus fell through.

The Italy international said several times he wanted to remain in Serie A, but the Bianconeri did not take up their option after a season there on loan.

It’s now reported Sunderland are willing to pay £14m to take Aquilani off Liverpool’s hands.

The Black Cats are said to be in negotiations with the Anfield side, beating competition from Tottenham.

Aquilani showed in his season at Juve that he has recovered from the numerous injury problems that plagued the last few years at Roma and Liverpool.

I'd rather not sell him. If he is happy in england id rather keep him.

I'm sure he would be brilliant for them in the 3 or 4 matches he managed to play before getting fucked again.

Of course, he's just played an entire season in serie A with fewer injury problems than almost everyone in our current squad (other than Lucas, obviously). We cured his injury problems and then moved him on. It was an act of charity.

I don't see that that tells us much. The Prem is harder and faster.
[/quote]

Well since he was perennially injured in Italy in times past, I think it tells us his chronic recurrent problems are past (as it was claimed they would be). So it tells us much.
