If rafa stays then aquilani will have until january. Whoever said earlier that we needed him on today seems to forget

A) we won
B) he's currently very shit.

I think if rafa is sacked then aqualini will be given more starts by the new manager

I was told in regards to Keane that the idea was to get him and Barry together and that was Benitez's intention to pair those two together, but obviously it didnt work.

It's way down there on a long list of reasons to get rid of Rafa.
I suppose, but the whole Aquilani debacle is really embarrassing and has fucked our season totally.

keane - 20m
'the doss' - 8m
aqualini - 20m

48 million and all three hardly played (early day with aqua to be fair)

meaning that 20m could have been spent on striker?

fuck you could have spent that money on a LB and we'd be tons better off. Really any logical buy would have improved us.

If you took Kean and Aquilani and picked out their ideal positions in a 4-2-3-1; oh fuck its Gerrards role. Come on Man!

Bollocks, probably, but it is exactly what Benitez has actually said
i just can't believe that's true.

That whole pathetic, disgraceful Benitez/ Barry/ Keane interview was one of the two moments that made me belatedly realise that we need to fuck Benitez off.

The other was his starting XI against Spurs at the beginning of the season, when it was obvious - even in August - we were going to struggle.

Ah well.
He's been a disastrous 20m mistakeam The second one on the bounce by Benitez

Seriously, if you pay that kind of money and the player can't even get a game ahead of one of the worst CM players to wear the shirt, you should really think about quitting

We should have bought fucking Cattermole and spent the rest on a striker. Or left winger. Or left-back. Or right-winger. Or centre-back
I think we may be overlooking 18M we spent on a right back that isn't a right back aswell.

Rafa is making to many expensive mistakes these days.

Hmmm, not sure about that one Dreamy.

I suppose there is a "priority/ cost" argument, but I was - and still am - happy that we signed Magic, because I think he's a very good player and one of the best RBs in Europe.

I'd rather have a RB who inspires me defensively though -

However, if he starts with Kuyt ahead of him, it's ok I guess.

Buy a cheap Arbeloa type fullback in the summer and push Johnson up the pitch.

Allow Dirk to compete for the striking positions, with Yossi and Johnson competing for the RW spot.

Simple

The ideal is a player who can both attack and defend to premium standard, as Cashley's become, but they're rarer than hen's teeth. In the absence of such a player I'll settle for a fullback who's very good at one and not that bad at the other, i.e.Magic. His defensive shortcomings are massively exaggerated IMO.

It's easier to look shit at fullback as people are often running at full pace towards you. Yeah he's not the best defender, but he makes up for it in other aspects. Besides, I thought half this site wanted "attacking fullbacks"?

Agree there and was echoing something similar the other day. Johnson has made errors in defensive areas this year, no doubt there. But he's made numerous amounts of vital interceptions in his time here and plenty of other good defensive work. Our problems lie with our defence becoming a balanced unit - one which is used to a more attacking type of fullback. This will develop over time.

In the present, there needs to be greater communication between the CB's and our CM's to help fill the spaces left open for a counter-attack.

In short, simply blaming Johnson for our defensive lapses this year is very lazy.

It's the whole cost/priority bollocks really.

But sometimes when quality players become available and want to join your club such arguments go out the window.

We needed a new RB. We needed more English players. We needed to get our money back off Portsmouth.

He ticked the boxes and that was that.

His plan was to play Keane and Torres up front. And a midfield like this :

Barry - Mascherano - Gerrard - Kuyt

Johnson a bad signing ?

Are you MENTAL !?!
Very good player, not a great signing given what we needed.

Yup.

With him in the team we scored less and conceded more goals on average than we did in the league last season. Also we won 7 of the 17 league games he's played while winning 9 of the 11 he has missed.

Maybe, but if we get 7-10 years of decent service out of him, nobody will be arsed.

I think he may prove a bad signing for Benitez, but not for this club, if that makes sense.
