I know a lot of old united fans that would go to city when utd were away long before all the games being on tv (and when utd were shit)

I'm rather young so I've never experienced nor saw anything of the like, but I've heard of a past where the Red and the Blue of Merseyside weren't bitter, no segregation of fans during derby matches. I for one find playing Everton exciting, more so than other "normal" premiership games. I hold no grudges, don't despise, nor at all hate them. Even when they beat us, it was soon to be pushed to the side, just as if any other team had beaten us. Scum however, are a whole different case.
I say, a mutual respect and symbiotic union in Merseyside would be something to be proud of. But of course, I haven't experienced as much of the development of history as some (most?) of you.

When I was about 14/15 I used to go and watch Everton when Liverpool were playing away despite already having allegiance to the Reds.

Posting on the Ireland V France thread I mentioned my English heritage and it got me thinking about my paternal Scouse Grandfather. He was born on the Breck Road (above what is now the George Pub) and was a die-hard Liverton fan in that he supported both Liverpool and Everton equally.
He went to all home games of both teams and always claimed he didn't have a preference - he loved the city of Liverpool and felt pride in both of his teams!
I once asked him who he supported during the derby matches and he said "whoever was ahead in the league" in that it gave one of his teams a better chance of a trophy.
He had 2 sons, my Father who is a Liverpool fan and my Uncle who was an Everton fan. He chose my Father (eldest son) as the Liverpool fan because Liverpool were ahead of Everton in the league!
Was my Grandfather an oddball or were there other such fans and (doubtful) do any such fans still exist?

He preferred Liverpool, but would always go and watch Everton play when Liverpool were away.

One of my oldest friends was a big Scum supporter all through his teens and early twenties. He now supports Liverpool. While I agreed to be the best man at his wedding, let's just say I think his decision making process isn't all that sound. Mind you, Becks was his fave player so I can't say I'm surprised.
I met a guy at a bar once and he told me that he supported the Scum, but his 2nd team was Liverpool. I decided he knew nothing about football and dropped the topic.
