Posting on the Ireland V France thread I mentioned my English heritage and it got me thinking about my paternal Scouse Grandfather. He was born on the Breck Road (above what is now the George Pub) and was a die-hard Liverton fan in that he supported both Liverpool and Everton equally.

He went to all home games of both teams and always claimed he didn't have a preference - he loved the city of Liverpool and felt pride in both of his teams!

I once asked him who he supported during the derby matches and he said "whoever was ahead in the league" in that it gave one of his teams a better chance of a trophy.

He had 2 sons, my Father who is a Liverpool fan and my Uncle who was an Everton fan. He chose my Father (eldest son) as the Liverpool fan because Liverpool were ahead of Everton in the league!

Was my Grandfather an oddball or were there other such fans and (doubtful) do any such fans still exist?

I think it was Brendan who once said if Liverpool didnt exist then he'd be an Everton fan because of the city implications. I agree with that, but yeah, your grandad was a goof.

I'd say there's lots of scouse kids who vacillate between the teams before forming a firm allegiance to one.

Liverton ? What ? Eh?

My dad's a blue as are most of his brothers. I'm a red thank the lord. Family get togethers are fun.

What city implications are you on about?

If Liverpool didn't exist I'd be an Everton fan because my Dad is.

I was bought a Liverpool kit by my Aunty Ella when i was about 6 or 7 so thats why i supported them, i would probably have stuck with whichever team that was ultimately.
When i was a kid and teams released a new kit every 3 years or whatever i wanted new kits all the time so for birthdays and christmas's i get shirts from loads of teams and didnt care whos i wore.

Oh, right.

But that's a given, really. What kind of cunt would be born in Liverpool and not support either Everton or Liverpool?

Every Tranmere fan I've ever met has been balding prematurely and has had bad breath. His name was Frank.

Hahaha....

My Dad is a big red, and his brother is a big blue. They both used to go to all home games at Anfield and Woodison as kids, until they were old enough not to be bunked in over the turnstiles. I also went to quite a few Everton games as a small lad, bunked in over the turnstiles by said uncle. I never had any inclination to turn to the dark side though.

Splitters !

My uncle supports both Liverpool and Everton and doesn't show any allegience to one team on derby days. Very strange!

My wifes dad and uncles used to go to watch whoever was at home as kids, they gradually became biggots to one side or the other , Kate's dad a red, one uncle a die hard blue, the other a dies hard red, all season ticket holders.

The thing was it was cheap to go to a game just before the war for a kid, probably the equivalent of a couple of quid now so going to a game a week was easily affordable.

regards

I think that's a sign of a past era. My user name is a sign of the pride I took in Merseyside's dominance in the mid '80's. As I said then to my Evertonian friends - "I'd love it if Liverpool could come first and you came second every year, and we could beat you in the Cup Final, too". Can anyone imagine a Cup Final between the two teams today being greeted by chants of "Merseyside"? Too much water under the bridge since then - too many bad feelings. In simpler times, when football was a working class game, I'm sure there could have been a less polemic approach - though I think your Grandfather is an extreme case.

I was always a Red but when I was a kid I didn't hate the other lot, even though they were genuine challengers of ours occasionally. That changed though when the bitters started giving it large with the "murderers" bit. Now I despise them even more than the Mancs, and that's saying something.

I met a guy at a bar once and he told me that he supported the Scum, but his 2nd team was Liverpool. I decided he knew nothing about football and dropped the topic.
