Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso believes patience will be the key if the Reds are to progress under Brendan Rodgers.

Alonso, who swapped Merseyside for Madrid in August 2009, made 210 appearances for the club and scooped Champions League and FA Cup winners' medals during his stay.
He explained to BBC Sport how he still feels close to Liverpool and that he monitors the team's progress from afar.
"With Brendan, Liverpool are building a project," said Alonso.
"They need to be patient. We all want to see Liverpool fighting for the Champions League places.
"I still follow the Premier League and I still feel very attached to Liverpool and I follow them. I consider myself a Liverpool fan."

Human league "don't you want me baby" keeps popping into my head. Pretty soon Istanbul will be 10 years ago. Beeeeezare

Say we have a 20m transfer kitty in the summer and Carroll goes along with Downing. That would add at least 20m on top.
Would we be crazy if we spent 40m on Alonso and a very good centre back and called it a day (excluding youth signings)?

I'd hope that it wouldn't cost 40M to buy the two players but I don't think so no. Depressingly he is exactly what this team needs.

Alonso won't be effected by age as much as Gerrard, he's never relied on his pace, if anything an older wiser brain might make him even better. What a better way to wind down your career than coming to the club you love?

The excitement of Alonso signing would turn my bowls to those of a 2 year old for many weeks. PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN.

Depressingly though Keni? There's not much shame in needing a cool, experienced head. People laughed their heads off when we brought in Gary Mac.

I think he means, that we had him, and for whatever reason, we don't have him now, but we could really do with him.

As Gerry said, I'm just sad we had to sell him.

Great player and would've helped us so much over the last few years.

I wonder if a cheaky 10m bid would get him?
It's quite a lot for a player past 30 but then again Real would struggle to replace him for that amount.
We got 20 odd million for him and still haven't replaced him.
It would be the stuff of dreams if he came back.

Johnson----New CB------Agger?-------Enrique
------------Alonso-----------Gerrard-------------

Not Downing-----Sturridge---------Coutinho--
