Alonso on Benitez...

'There have been a lot of rumours but as I've said before, it was a professional relationship. I have always tried to do what he asked me to do on the pitch. When the birth of my child happened, I had to take a decision to be with my family because it was an important moment. Last summer when the club proposed that I had to be sold to buy new players it was a difficult moment, but I accepted it as a professional. That moment changed my mind, from that moment it was time for a change'.

So according to this article... Benitez was arguably pretty much to blame for him leaving...

but then it was from sky sports...

'but I accepted it as a professional. That moment changed my mind, from that moment it was time for a change'.

Er, yeah; sound's like it Xabi.

Obviously we don't know the in's and out's but Xabi went down in my estimations this summer, which is a shame really considering he was a fantastic player for the club; did the club really tell him he needed to be sold to fund other players, or that he was mediocrity personified that season and needed to be sold to fund his replacement?

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

Bad enough when fans seemed to take Xabi's side over the managers when he actually played for Liverpool. Now that he's a real madrid player? Fuck that.

Simple fact is Xabi left us when we needed him most. He ASKED to leave, and in doing so he didnt just leave Rafa, he left the club and the fans, who he knew full well had waited two decades for a title, and were on the cusp of getting one.

I think the team misses xabi, and him leaving may prove to have an enormous impact, but for fucks sake, its not like rafa fucked his missus is it? I'm not buying this 'forced out the door' stuff. According to him they had a working 'professional' relationship, was that not enough?

He went for the money and the glory of returning to his homeland a star. Fair enough. But he still left us when we needed him most.

Yep, that about sums it up.

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

He was shit for 2 seasons and being put on the transfer heap gave him a much needed kick up the arse (and obviously worked).

If it was me, I would also feel a little betrayed by Benitez - so I fully understand his decision to move on.

Once those bridges are burnt, you can't go back....simply.

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

Its saying what we all knew, well, most of us with half a brain. The love was lost, and the dice were cast when Xabi refused to travel when his wife was due, Rafa never forgave him and would off-load him ASAP. Xabi was miffed by that and would leave sooner rather than later on his terms.
I think it is six of one and half a dozen of the other. In my opinion, Xabi should have travelled, Rafa should not be such a control freak, and looked at the bigger picture.
To add the concluding bit.............
Rafa cried crocodile tears about Xabi going, he just wanted as much money as possible for him. It blew up in Rafa's face when G&T clung on to the proceeds though.

regards

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

Yup.

What happened suited every involved party to some extent.

Exactly so Sean. Not shit, but not great. He did have some injury issues.

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

Let's be clear here. We bought Johnson before Xabi declared his love for Madrid and handed in his transfer request. Aquilani was only bought after Xabi left as an emergency replacement (yes, LFC had been tracking him but I imagine they have a dossier on suitable replacements for every player in the team).

Had Xabi not left, and I absolutely do not believe Rafa or LFC wanted him to leave, then we would be the favourites to win the league this year and would probably do so, now we have seen the effect Johnson has had on our right wing.

In fact Xabi staying may well have given Rafa the confidence to wheel and deal in other areas of the team (Babel, Voronin etc.) to get us an experienced back up for Torres. Xabi leaving blew a big hole in our planned transfer dealings for the Summer IMO.

I think it was pretty obvious to Rafa that Xabi was leaving, but I think it was the timing of his departure. If he had come out and said so just after last season ended we would have had more time to raise funds to buy more players.

So you're due to be kicked repeatedly in the nuts by a Rafa fan sometime soon according to the laws of Karma. Perhaps even the man himself.

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

alonso is full of shit. so fucking WHAT if rafa tried to offload him TWO SEASONS AGO rafa made it perfectly clear that NOW he wanted to keep him so using the past is just an excuse to get sympathy from the fans who supported you (alonso) when you were average for two seasons (the reason rafa wanted rid in the first place).

just be a man and tell the truth
'I wanted to return to spain and the madrid project excites me'

is that so hard? JEEEZ!!

Great post.

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

"When the club proposed that I be sold to fund new players..."

Am I the only person who's read that bit properly?

We tried to sell him but were quite disrespectful to the player in the manner that we went about it. By the same token though Alonso had been piss poor for the best part of two seasons and has now walked out when we needed him most, it also took this kick up the arse for him to improve his form, and if he had a big move on his mind and that's what influenced his form, then fuck him.

Also that quote (from Alonso, who apparently hates Rafa after being so badly shit on by him) actually says "the club", not "Rafa", for a board that's big on quotes when speculating, that's one big fucking comment right there that's been massively overlooked by the usual Rafa antagonists.

Et tu Mark?

I don't think any other opinion on here annoys me more than that. It's such shit, it really really is.

Anyways, this doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know. They had a professional relationship and everyone kept up pretenses on the pitch, but yeah the love had been lost and Xabi wanted to return home. Like OMG, I hate the damn traitor so much!!!

Anyways, onwards and upwards. I'm clinging onto Oncey's belief that Aquilani will be the second coming.

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

He loves the fans but he goes where the money is to play for football's Harlem Globetrotters. Feck him. It's not like someone waving a hankie at the Titanic from the last lifeboat. It's like someone waving a hankie at the Titanic from the last lifeboat after putting a fecking HOLE in its side. Bastard.

Why?
At the end of the day it's just a job, why shouldn't he get off to attend his first child's birth?

There's nothing that would've kept me from that moment, even if it meant being fired.
I don't see why it should be any different for footballers irrespective of how much they earn.
On that point Rafa was being prick.

Yup, agreed on every word.

Re: Alonso on Bentiez...

I think even the biggest alonso fan would agree that by HIS standards he was below par for two seasons running. last season he was back to his best, if his standards hadn't dropped so noticeably for two seasons last season wouldn't have stood out would it?

having sad that a below par alonso is still better than most CM in the league if not europe.

Like Shankly was being a prick for never having any time for his wife and family. Managers are obsessive. We encourage them to be obsessive. It's a bit rich for us to then slag them off for being obsessive when we allow a bit of the real world to pierce our own obsessive interest in our team doing well.

Piss poor is probably stressing the point a bit, but he was mediocre by anyone's standards.

Irrationally jumping from one end of the scale to the other 🙂

I'd say mediocre by Alonsos standards. The season before last he wasn't up to his game that's for sure. Last season he was superb. The thing that troubles me most about the whole thing is did he play so well last year just to engineer himself a move out the club ? So, when he was playing so poorly, was he capable of so much more ? Did he really give a fuck ? It seems to be me the bad blood between him and Benitez was generated when his kid was due. On this, I sympathise with Alonso to be honest. Everyone should be entitled to see the birth of their children. If that 'bad blood' was the basis of why he was playing so badly then Alonso was out of line and good fucking riddance if so. At the end of the day, whatever transpired between him and Rafa, the fans wanted him to stay. Badly. He let us/them down in my view to go and play for a team of media whores who are regarded with such antipathy and disdain in the Basque area. I don't wish him luck nor do I wish him harm but I think he's unwittingly (or not) let down a load of people with his action but Benitez does have do carry some of the blame for causing Alonsos head to be turned in the first place.

It's done now so I'm just going to get on with it. Alonso means nothing to me anymore. Just hope Aquilani is up to it.

Except Real Madrid is nothing like Harlem Globetrotters.

They are the most historic, successful and illustrious club of all time.

I don't like the way they behave, like they're above the law, but you can't really deny the above.
