Here's his MOTM performance against Finland yesterday:

Interesting to see that he's playing the holding position. It's where I think his long-term prospects for us lie. If he can force his way into the side at the expense of Lucas now, I think our midfield will look a lot better - he's got the guile that none of Lucas, Gerrard or Henderson have. It also gives you much more flexibility in terms of midfield combinations and balance if your holding midfielder can double up as a pace controlling playmaker.

Hoping Rodgers gives him a go sooner rather than later.

Is it me or does he resemble Lucas in his purple patch there?
Don't think that's too inaccurate actually.

The difference being he's much younger, and has a much higher starting point, technically, than Lucas. Given an extended run of games in the holding position, I think he'll prove to be a far superior player.

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what I'm meant to take away from that video. There were some good interceptions and decent distribution (though the first minute had a few bad passes too), but you're right, it doesn't look like anything we haven't seen Lucas do.

As someone who didn't really see much of Allen at all during his time at Swansea, I can only judge him based on what he's done in a Liverpool shirt and apparently we're not really able to do that yet due to injury woes and what not.

I'd love for him to succeed here because we're crying out for the type of player he was billed as but I haven't seen a whole lot of evidence that suggests superior technique, guile and playmaking ability.

I'd give him a chance to prove himself in the upcoming fixtures but that's largely because I'm not convinced by the current lot and I'd quite like to see us get something out of that 15M quid.

He's got good agility in the role, to turn away from players, but he's still showing that naivety there at times to play a dangerous ball in and around that area deep in midfield. My main worry is that we're clearly looking at him in a deep role, where he'll break up the play and distribute, but as we saw too many times last season, he's too easily shrugged off the ball at times and he turns himself into trouble. When he got pressured last season by players, he buckled and left us wide open.

Hopefully that's just sign of his age and he'll eventually settle into the system and grow stronger on the ball, but right now, if the best we can do is say "yeah, he's a bit like Lucas there" then we haven't really gained much have we?

I want him to do well because we desperately need something different/better in the middle of the park, now he's fit he needs to get in the side and make us have to play him.

Or he just needs to sit around picking his nose, because Lucas is mere days away from playing his own way out of the team.

Based on this video alone, you can see why Lucas is starting ahead of him. Almost every pass is sideways and not a single one created an attacking opening. Lucas, for all his supposed deficiencies, is very good at finding angles for forward passes and he is moving the ball quicker.

I was one of those who was very happy when we signed Allen, because I thought he looked a top prospect at Swansea.

I won't pretend that he hasn't disappointed me in his time here, but I do think there are some pretty obvious reasons - and these include both the injury he had, and the general lack of balance we've had in midfield throughout Rodgers' time here.

I also don't think Lucas is an appropriate comparison - at the same age, Lucas was bracketed alongside the likes of Biscan and Diao as amongst the poorest midfield players we'd had in years. Allen is quicker, more agile, has the best centre of gravity of probably all our central midfielders, and passes the ball more quickly and sharply than Lucas ever has.

He's struggled to put those qualities together into consistent performances (barring his first 8-10 games, where I thought he was excellent), but given how much we've persisted with Lucas and Henderson (who I think are players of far lesser talent), I think it'd be pretty criminal to leave Allen frozen out. If nothing for the fact that we've spent 15 million on him, and as you say, we need to try and realise that value to whatever extent we can.

Doing that will require both giving him a run of games, and identifying the right position for him.

I have to admit I've had a revision in terms of his ability position-wise in his time here - I see him developing more as a Parker/Carrick/mini-Alonso type rather than the higher position he occupied at Swansea.

Well, it might be that all you say is true. I hope it is, but he's got a ways to go to prove it.

Perhaps this video isn't enough to do his performance justice and those who watched the match might have a fairer judgement of his performance.

This was a team that was without Ramsey and Bellamy and I'd imagine Ledley and King (both with 2 club goals already this season) were given more license to thrill.

It was also his 1st start since August (Capital One Cup) and his only game time prior to this match was as a sub against Fulham.

In instances at 0.14 and 1.01 when he had the ball, his teammates showed little urgency in pushing forward (at 1.08, the Wales front trio were sandwiched by 6 Finnish players).

It is worth noting that his good work at 3.15 started off the counter attack that got Wales' lead and only goal.

Could there be any coincidence too that Finland scored the equaliser in the 92nd min, just minutes after Allen was subbed off?

For Finland's move that start from 0.46, Wales were playing a high line. Note the position of the 2 midfielders and Ashley Williams (no. 6) between 0.49 to 0.51.

Based on Lucas's 5 seasons of mediocrity* (at best) you should be able to see why he shouldn't be starting games for LFC.

*The term "mediocrity" does not refer to his TWO decent performances in that time; yes, the legendary "I saw Lucas play well moments" Man City and Chelsea games.

It took lucas 5 years to prove he was worth it, so Joe has time

Actually I don't think he has. The way we are moving forward with transfers it's this season or never for him IMHO. If Luis goes next Summer then we'll have money to spend and it'll go on a Striker (or two), LB and a DM (AM being covered this January).

Can you ? - that was a Lucas like performance with one glaring difference : did you see the bit where Allen chased back a guy who was breaking into the box - instead of running into the back of him and bundling him over he decided to try to win the ball instead.

I completely agree with Sir Binny.
On a somewhat related note, @Binny, you're much too humble I'm sure, but I think everyone would like you to change your username to King Binny.
Just do it..
It'll be brilliant

He's a 15m pound player and rodgers' poster boy . Fuck making excuse for him , it's time he and rodgers show why that money was spent on him .

I think we'll try and flog him in the summer. He's not good enough and won't make it here. He can't play as a attacking midfielder as he's not creative enough and he's too weak as a defensive midfielder. His only option has been to sit on the bench as backup to gerrard. So he'll be gone in the summer i hope.

or just strolling to let Cazorla have a free header

What are ya saying lads. That the boy next door is in fact, beyond the smile, and dedicated professional image, has in fact got the mentality of a Harry Kewell?

There are two advantages Allen has over Lucas as far as Im concerned, firstly hes quicker so he doesnt need to make those clumsy fouls Lucas does, but more importantly Allen always gets into a position to receive the ball from a team mate and keep recycling possession, Lucas does this sometimes but he frequently hides when we are getting out played and becomes invisible in just the sort of games where we need a player to help slow the temp and stop us being over run. Id like to see Allen get a run of games in the holding midfield position

I think Binny has changed since we started calling him 'King'. Totally up himself.

Word on the street is that he has made himself a sceptre out of toilet rolls for when he sits on his porcelain throne.

I'm all for him -or anyone - gaining confidence and all that from games like this and it's exactly what he needed, but fuck me anyone would have looked good in that role in that game. He was given 10m of space either which way whenever he picked up the ball.

You only have to look at his first run in a red shirt when is he in "that" role and teams pressure and harass him. He bricks it and start fucking up

He is not a holding player. Finland flattered him
