Alisson - The best GK, we've ever had?

@Judge Jules you've seen them all, where does Ali stand in your opinion. He is way better than Grobbelaar imho
Grobbelar was a fantastic shot stopper but made to many mistakes. Will always be remembered for his wobbly legs routine in the penalty shoot out in the European cup. Ray Clemence is up there but Ali is overall a better keeper and would think he's up there with Shilton and big red nose as the best keepers ever of the last 50 years

Clem remains no1 for the moment. Why did we sell him so early?

Weird the Utd keeper is so poor yet second behind Ali in those stats.
De Gea will be back in nets soon.

In 1977, Keegan left for Hamburg. Four years later, Clemence left, too, amid some lurid speculation about his private life. So let's have it straight, Ray. Liverpool had just won the European Cup again. Why did you leave? He blushes slightly. "There were some scurrilous rumours, but the truth is that after that European Cup final against Real Madrid in Paris, I sat in the dressing-room with a paper cup full of champagne and the feeling that it was just another game. I made the decision there and then. I thought, `If you can't be on the ceiling after winning the European Cup, it's not the place to be.' Before the game, it hadn't occurred to me to leave. They'd just brought Bruce Grobbelaar to the club, so it wasn't like there was no challenge for me. But I had seen players stay and stay and then move to clubs with no chance of winning anything. Roger Hunt went to Bolton. Stevie Heighway went to America. I didn't want that."

Three days later, Clemence handed his transfer request to Bob Paisley, who tried forlornly to dissuade him. Southampton and Tottenham both offered terms, and Clemence chose the latter, wisely as it turned out, for Spurs won the FA Cup in his first season there.

Didn’t we honour Clem and his time at Liverpool with that record of only conceeding 4 home goals at Anfield in a season, by smashing 4 past him on his first return to Anfield with Spurs?

Gave him another season to remember only conceding 4 goals at Anfield.

Actually checked… looks like it was 3-1z

Ah well

Clem developed into an absolute top class keeper for sure, but I saw some of his earlier games live and he didn't hit the ground running the way Alisson did. That home goals against record was remarkable of course, but it wasn't just his record - no such record ever is. It took me a fair while to promote Alisson over him, but I stand by that now.

Clemence came into a struggling team, just knocked out of the FA Cup by Watford. So a major rebuild was necessary and the first part of that was a rock-solid defence. In his first full season in the team he was part of a defence that conceded only 24 goals in a 42 game season. Of course, not all of that was due to the keeper but it does suggest that he was excelling from early in his career. Allison did make a difference, but he was coming into a highly successful side, that had just reached the CL final. In addition he was taking the place of Karius, whereas Clemence was taking over from Tommy Lawrence, who had 2 league titles and an FA Cup to his credit. So, I still stand by Ray Clemence as the number 1, but we are certainly blessed to have Allison playing for us.

The measure of a goalie is much different these days. But Ali is certainly as good as the qualities that made Clem and Grobelaar great goalies. They are/were all quality.

Where does Tommy Lawrence sit?

You do know his contract expired right? United would never swallow their pride and take him back.

Wasn't it 3-1, to win the league?

Yeah… 1-0 at half time and Clem goes between the sticks at the Kop end to thunderous applause…

Then we smash 3 past him to win the league.

This is about the time I started following football properly - or have some recollection of matches and players - I would have been about 9.

I agree that Allison is the best keeper we've had. Special memories also of Clemence keeping goal when I was a youngster and always remember the Kop's welcome when he returned with Spurs.

I remember that (his return). Special.

That's what set us apart from other fans... I think sadly those days are long gone

Based on what? I'd lay odds that a returning player with a previous LFC career as outstanding as Clem's would get the same welcome today.
