Liverpool FC star Luis Alberto was banned from the road after pleading guilty to drink-driving.

The 21-year-old Spanish attacking midfielder was caught during the early hours on Monday March 31 while driving home from a friend's birthday party.

Police stopped the footballer, who was driving a white Porsche, on Croxteth Drive as he appeared to be using his mobile phone.

Alberto, whose full name is Luis Alberto Alconchel Romero, was also seen swerving the car and, after narrowly missing an island, was asked to step out of his vehicle and undergo a breath test.

He was found to be nearly double the legal limit of 35mg, with a recorded 61mg.

Alberto, who was accompanied by an interpreter at Liverpool magistrates' court yesterday, admitted being in control of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

His lawyer, Michael Hogan, said: "Mr Romero does not go out, this was the first time he has been out properly since he has been in Liverpool.”

He added: "Luis has no previous convictions to his name and is unused to strong alcohol. Normally his drinking habits are modest and with being a professional footballer, he will find it difficult without the use of his car.”

District Judge Richard Clancy banned the football star for 12 months and ordered him to attend an alcohol awareness course

He said: "You will have six months to pass a drink drive course, if this is completed in six months the ban will be reduced to nine months."

He was also fined £1,500 and told to pay a a £150 victim surcharge.

Alberto, who was signed from Sevilla last summer for £6m, has made a total of 12 appearances this season, but is yet to start a Premier League game

Admittedly it didn't catch-on, but I recall christening him 'boozer' on account of his middle name, looks like he is more than trying to make up for it!

It's just weird, drunk driving seems to be a "thing " among footballers

I would say what a tool, but if I remember correctly at 21 I drove like a cunt pretty much at all times, and there was more than one occasion that I drove completely hammered. All 21 year old men (especially wealthy ones who don't live in the real world) are twats. Can't these people afford taxis? Nobs.

At being twice the limit that would be like 2 or 3 pints on a seasoned drinker so may have been like 2 doubles or something. Taxi should definitely have been taken. Also, was the "friends birthday" the one where the whole team were in that group photo a month ago?!

"who was driving a white Porsche, on Croxteth Drive as he appeared to be using his mobile phone".
Pretty stealth there from our Alberto, as inauspicious as they come.

Poor old Alberto is, by all accounts, the thickest player we've had for many years. The kind of lad who makes McAteer seem like Wittgenstein.

Seems strange that he'd drive, but maybe he didn't trust a taxi man to not spread stories about him being drunk etc.?

That's always the excuse that NFL, NBA, players etc. give but it is such a bad excuse. The NFL for example offers a free taxi service nationwide that players can use at no cost completely anonymously. Despite this you will still hear stories about athletes weary of using such a service because they don't trust that their coaches, front office, etc. won't be informed that they were out on the town getting sloshed.

It's really dumb.

The NFL should call that service No Fee Lifts.

I could understand your average non English speaker being fucked trying to get a taxi, cos you'd call delta & get some Carra soundalike on the other end & no one would understand anyone. However footy players at this level have a club service who will be easily be able to sort out a taxi driver (a discreet one no less) at short notice.
