Ajax (h) post-match

Is it wrong match after match? His shortcomings have been dissected by all and sundry and he wouldn't be getting that attention if he was tactically alert.
Whilst we can all accept that every player makes mistakes from time to time his lack of effort, jogging around whilst Salah, for example in the last match, ran100m flat out to defend in the box, is very frustrating.
Of course this isn't chronic but it's often enough that people notice.
And it goes without saying that in general we all love him even though tactically this season he's off (for whatever reason) and his defensive contributions have decidedly been lacking and highlighted because he's not been delivering in attack.

It’s wrong that it always come back to Trent. He’s been no worse than Robbo on the other side. What stats I’ve found, he’s been better in terms of tackles and interceptions. Saying it’s Trent time and time again is lazy. It’s a collective issue.

This is now probably veering off into the tactics thread, but we are most likely seeing a shift in philosophy from Klopp. Throughout the whole side we are changing and everyone looks clueless. Added to there has been strange lethargic performances that’s impacted everyone which has seen the two biggest issues of the season. Complete lack of pressure without the ball and slow build up play. So we are easily dispossessed and the ball is released to our right just like teams have done for years. It’s nothing new except we covered it well in previous seasons.

So what we have is a player who doesn’t understand what he should be doing, yet expected to bomb forward and back all game and is physically fucked in the most demanding area of the pitch.

We all are aware of where he lacks and take it on the chin because of what he usually brings going forward. Now that’s not happening for him we just focus on the negative. Yet everyone else seems to get a free ride.

I’m terms of him being lazy and not tracking back, I’d like to see the data on that. Is there somewhere that records player sprints because I’d like to see it. Not just run along with the narrative.

Nobody complained about Trent as RB when he was up there in the assists chart a couple seasons ago.

How the tables have turned eh. He's experiencing a dip in form, which is allowed btw. You can't expect a young lad to bomb down the flanks up and down, week in week out, and maintain that consistency for 10 years straight. Even the great Roberto Carlos and Cafu had dips and lapses of concentration even at their peak. Robots will break down eventually too you know, and Trent's certainly not superhuman.

Yes, his attitude has been suspect lately but he's still young and i'm quite sure he'll learn quickly and grow out of this slump pretty soon. Trent's a good lad with good people around him, so i wouldn't worry him becoming like a Dele Alli for instance.

Just watch the CL finals goal, as painful as it is. They had a player in the box, Trent and Konate were there. Konate followed the striker, Trent was just jogging along, he had 5 yards on Vinicius who was stealing in on the far side. We all know what happened.

Was that tactics? Was he overloaded? He was just being clueless as he usually is, just ball watching. With Danny Blind, it's more or less the same situation. He marked neither players. No lessons were learnt, just more of the same.

And you seemed to want to blame the squad for that?

How did the ball get there? Was Diaz/Robbo blameless?

Clear as day. He didn't turn his head a single time.

Why are Robbo and Diaz holding hands 15-20 metres behind play?
Jesus mate you really need to give up on this "someone else is to blame - probably a forward who lost it" lark. We all know players make mistakes and virtually every goal ever scored is down to someone somewhere on the pitch causing the first domino to fall.

And yes we all agree that tactically we seem to be doing our utmost to heap pressure on Trent by exposing his weaknesses.

That isn't the question or the issue ... it's what Trent does when he's faced with an attack(er), no matter how it started, and what he could do (or doesn't) to prevent a cross or a goal. For a couple of seasons we've all been going on about the goals he's been guilty of errors on (yes, even you) but it seems to be getting worse and no, again forget about others and just watch what Trent does (or doesn't).
You mentioned Robbo (and stats could be deceiving simply because Trent is targeted by virtually every team we play - are you starting to see the trend here? It's not just us that are 'piling in on Trent') but have you ever seen Robbo just start gently jogging back when the ball or a player goes past him ? Not on your life.

This is the key issue sometimes with Trent being picked out as key failure.
We often know what Trent didn’t do at the final phase, but how about the phases that lead up to it. There has been a few players not doing their job. The ball doesn’t just teleport there.

Seriously ? He's nearly 24 years old ! Next month. He's no longer some inexperienced youngster learning the ropes. That would be Elliott, Carvalho, Jones & Bajcetic. Even Nunez and Konate are younger ! He debuted 5 years ago and has only got a few games to go to hit 250 games for us. That makes him one of the more experienced players in our squad. Youth & experience are most definitely not mitigating factors - and him not learning is something many have raised here.

Yes I sliced my tee shot into the lake, fluffed my chip out of the rough and then duffed my approach into a bunker. That is why I 4 putted on the green.

Ajax fan describes their visit to Liverpool:

"No big police force. A lot of stewards, but they almost formed a guard of honour. Everyone greeted me kindly. No tension. No stress. No fuss. Just enter with your ticket. It went smoothly...that deserves a big compliment.
"It was no different after the narrow, but justified 2-1 defeat. After being held briefly, the doors opened. We could go in any direction we wanted. No police escort. No blue flashing lights or intimidating robocops anywhere. Ajax [fans] could just go into the pubs around the stadium.
"On the way back to our rented house we saw Ajax supporters singing 'Three Little Birds' in a Liverpool pub. On a stage and with a microphone. They are happy scenes."

(there's a pic in the Echo)

Not really the same analogy is it, that’s all on you...

Against Ajax, Trent made a few vital second interceptions and covered a few break aways, I’m just choosing not to ignore them in the overall match analysis.

Not sure I agree you about Robbo not being worse, since last season he’s looked off and given ball away more often in his position rather than not being there.

Is Trent doing less defensively or are we just more exposed now?

Seems like we are in general giving away more chances across the team abd this steadily has got worse.

Read carefully.

I was emphasizing on his form.

Seriously I swear some on 6CM like to argue just for argument’s sake. Get off the comp once every while. It’ll do you a world of good and help you not to feel you have to dissect and nitpick every flipping thing.

Yes, read (or should I say write) carefully.

What you said has nothing to do with form :
he's still young and i'm quite sure he'll learn quickly
and I just pointed out he's neither young nor inexperienced. Simples.

I know… let’s sell Trent to fund Jude!!!!
No, we need to move him into MF. In all honesty, the players we might get a decent fee for are Gomez, Nat and CJ. 2 are injury prone, and I guess Nat wants more minutes, and I can't blame him.
If we can't get Jude, and at £120m I am hoping we can't, then there are plenty of other options without the English tax

We’ll sign a midfielder in Jan and we’ll go for Jude in the summer - We’ll land him at £80-90.

If we sign a 3rd midfielder it’ll either be a free or an U19.

Then the following summer we’ll probably be in the market for a CB.

This is all based on Nunez actually settling - otherwise we need a forward.

I love Trent. I’m a big big fan of his, but he’s never been great defensively and still isn’t. It’s no coincidence that opposing teams consistently target him as they know he’s a weakness at the back. Either he needs to step up defensively or we need to cut out the supply that targets him. Personally, I’d like to see him sharpen up his defensive senses and I’d love to see him absolutely bust a gut every time he has to cover a runner or cut out an attack.

I agree with the general consensus that it was a step in the right direction. You have to remember that Thiago, Matip, Jota and Tsimikas aren't quite up to speed yet in terms of match fitness, certainly in terms of playing regularly anyway. All are more or less starters, Tsimikas aside. Once these guys are back to their best and injury free (fingers crossed) we'll push on. There's definitely a problem with the defensive line though, we were nearly caught out a few times again Ajax, we need to get it sorted.
