We should bid for Ronaldo and Messi this summer, we won't get them, but it'll look good for Rodgers.

I agree, BUT, in Rodgers defence, how many of those were his first or did he have to make do with?

We/Rodgers also bid for:

Diego Costa - HIT
Willian - hit
Mkhitaryan - hit
Konoplyanka - hit
Lallana - hit

For all we know, it could be Ayre fucking him up, or the board not keen on spending the cash?

How are they branded as Hits? We don't know how they would bring value to our team do we?

I think some people do, they kinda expect the lesser clubs to do what we want, which is a bit of an arrogant attitude, why should they? They have to get the best deal for their club, and we've been proven to be chumps too many times in the transfer market. Like I said though, it's a tough situation, we lose out on him and it's another transfer failure for the Football Manager dullards to throw at us, we overpay and he fails to live up to expectations and we've got another expensive mess to mop up.

We can live with the former, not so much the latter. Easy choice for me.

Rodgers has got too many wrongs to fully trust him in the transfer market. Aspas, Borini, Assaidi and Alberto are a few names that shouldn't been here in the first place.

His signings have a net positive value, no? In Sturridge and Coutinho you have £65 -£75m in talent.

Yet Peter, your insistence that your superior capacity to process and articulate that information is quite at odds with your hapless assertion that... 'A best 11 isn't in fact 11 players, but a loose collection of up to 15 arbitrary players, who may get a game in that best 11, 90% of the time, or something'.

What the fuck Peter?

It's not much use having a thesaurus when you're talking complete shite.

Regardless, it isn't and wasn't my initial gripe. 5 years ago I declared the 'best 11' talk a myth, to much laughter at the time too. It's a credit to me and the learning powers of the masses that it's now accepted as a load of footballing bullshit. You can file it alongside 'world class players in attack, irrespective of position', 'defensive midfielders at home', and many others as footballing intellect that I had to continually promote, much to the reluctance of the great unwashed.

By bringing that fucking term up again, you're merely propagating the myth Peter. Fuck it off. It doesn't exist, however you wish to attempt to articulately pretty it up.

Can I use first XV instead please?

Maybe just on weekends and bank holidays?

Aspas, Moses, Borini, Alberto, Assaidi, Şahin, Cissokho, Toure have all added next to nothing.

Yes, most are on the cheaper end of the scale, but they're still people he decided to sign and they haven't worked out as well as he (presumably) hoped.

He shouldn't get a carte blanche to sign who he wants for whatever amount he wants, that's my only point. And the same would go for pretty much any manager, especially given our budget constraints.

And thankfully he's not being given that power.

Well you have one Free Transfer (who did well for most of the season), 4 Loanees and 2 young players bought for the future in your list of 'haven't worked out wells'. Only Aspas can really be classified as a flop. So basically anyone else he has bought for serious money has been a success. So why wouldn't you trust him with big money transfers since none of his have been failures, I do and I believe FSG do too.

Agreed. They'll also know that we need to capitalise on last season in order to consolidate our return to the leading group, and that they really do have to back their man this summer in order to achieve that.

I would count Borini as a flop too, more expensive than Coutinho, older and done nothing for us. He's 23 now, not exactly young any more.

But yeah, he hasn't done badly, there are some doubts over some of the other players like Mignolet too, but he still has a bit to prove. We'll see how he does this summer.

But you shouldnt by 12 players to have two good ones. he is not the only one doing these things... But walking up a step in clubs doesn't mean that you have to bring along all players you worked with before. two good examples is Moyes and his hunt for Everton players, as well as Solskjær thinking that a few Norwegian midfielders (Eikrem and Berget) was the key to keep Cardiff in the top flight.

A bit harsh. It is reassuring that B R targeted for top talent, for too long we have been out of the game when competing for the best. hopefully we will do so again and the allure of the transfer league will help a lot.

We have always been rumoured to be in for the top players, we just rarely get them. Rodgers hasn't proved anything different, he hasn't signed anyone of note that other top clubs have been in for too.

That said, I don't care if other clubs are in for players, but the point is that we haven't been able to beat another club to a player yet.*

*I'm sure I'm missing someone obvious...

sure i agree, but I think you forget too easily the dark ages before BR, when we hardly signed anyone of note and spent a lot of 'proven' premier league. BR has come in and gone for players who a year ago we may not have heard, but who have not gone on to become household names. we seem to be identifying real talent, but you're right, we need to step it up and ensure we sign them too.

I'm surprised how many have a favourable impression of Rodgers' ability in the transfer market.

IMO so far it looks mediocre to poor.

I'm so sick of these dumb GIF responses I keep seeing. It's like the art of articulation has been lost in a lazy quagmire of .gif/jpeg etc. Boring and a bit shit.

Where's @Semolina Lipton when you need him? Sigh.
I'm pretty bad for this, but I absolute love gifs! If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many words must a moving picture be worth?!
