No it's nothing to do with scouting I'm afraid it's to do with having enough cash and being willing to spend 6M on a young player from a lower division club at Christmas when everybody is waiting for him to be free in summer....

And yes he does look nifty but it's early doors, what about that new kid at Villa? He looked useful the other day...

When we did have money to spend it was very rarely spent well so to say it's nothing to do with scouting doesnt seem accurate , in fairness.

As Johnson starts to come into his own, City begin to realise what a duffer they've bought in Silva (for more than 4 times Johnson's value). I'm sure there's a valuable lesson there.

Johnson wasn't Spanish enough for us. Thankfully, at least our skint-ness saved us from Silva.

He was quoted as saying that the reason he went to city was because he was impressed that they were willing to gamble on him at Christmas and actually pay a big fee rather than wait until summer as both Chelsea and Liverpool were doing. Fuck all to do with scouting as we were already aware of him everything to do with money.
Now aquilani is to do with scouting I will accept! But then maybe Alves was to do with money as was Silva and Villa etc all players Rafa was after but sadly never had 430M to get.... Oh and as for writing Silva off after a handful of games ... He was more than a little bit good here last season so ... I hope he is a flop but I wouldn't be so sure he will be just yet.

on a serious note though its clear we can't financially compete so its essential that we develop a different approach. being able to spot and buy players like this must be a priority for us. at the time johnson's contract was being run down we did what - buy the likes of riera i think.

i thought rafa managed it quite well during his first few seasons with the likes of garcia, alonso, reina, sissoko and even kuyt. unfortunately when he seemed to think we'd become rich and then never got the kind of money he expected signings like these dried up.

our new manager - does he have this quality? i've yet to see it, maybe if he can compete upto xmas and deliver a top 4 place and a good cup run he'll get a chance in january next summer else he'll be out without a doubt.

Wasn't particularly talking about Johnson, but our scouting record has been pretty rubbish.

Even if we did have the money to spent, it would have been wasted in all probability.
OUr risk-taking for the past decade usually means money down the derain.
