If this goes through at 30m odd I'll be livid. At 25, heading towards his prime, he's as sure a surefire quality buy as is out there, arguably perfectly suited to our system (but not Utd's)...

Talks between Manchester United and Chelsea over Juan Mata 'going well'

Last Updated: 21/01/14 8:56pm 26 Juan Mat: Not happy under Jose Mourinho Talks between Manchester United and Chelsea over the transfer of Juan Mata are going well, Sky Sports understands.

Sky Sports' Spanish football expert Guillem Balague says all parties, including Mata, want the deal to happen. The attacking midfielder - a £23.5m signing from Valencia in 2011 - has found first-team opportunities limited under Jose Mourinho this season, playing 90 minutes on just three occasions. And Balague revealed on Revista de La Liga: "Manchester United and Chelsea are negotiating the future of Juan Mata - and the idea is that Mata, who Chelsea are happy to let go, goes to Old Trafford in this transfer window. "Chelsea are asking for £32 million or with Wayne Rooney as part of the deal. Manchester United have said no to the money and no to Rooney - but I am under the impression that a deal will be reached because it benefits everybody.

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have questioned whether Juan Mata is the right player for Manchester United at this current time. "Manchester United need quality, Mata needs to get out of the situation he is in, and it would reinforce United for their meetings with (Chelsea's title rivals) Manchester City and Arsenal, which is clever from Jose Mourinho." Sky sources reported that talks between the two rivals are "progressing well' which came after we learnt that Chelsea wanted in excess of £35million for the diminutive midfielder. Unconvinced One man who remains unconvinced by Mata's proposed arrival at Old Trafford is former Manchester United defender Gary Neville. "That's a lot of money, 35 million quid, but they need a signing," Neville said on Monday Night Football. "Does he fit with what I would call the typical philosophy of Manchester United? I would say no. "The first question, I think, is where are you going to play him? Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are up top if they are fit so where are you going to play him? Are you going to play him off the left or off the right? "They would have to change to accommodate Juan Mata in the way they normally play. They normally play with wide players. Sometimes they tuck in, but generally they have wide players and the thing for me is where is he going to play? Jose Mourinho is still struggling to fit Juan Mata into the starting line-up at Chelsea. "He's obviously a fantastic football player, there's no doubt about that, but one thing it does do, I suppose, is that David Moyes, Manchester United and Ed Woodward need to sign a big player."

Meanwhile, Sky Bet continue to see support for Mata to leave Chelsea before the end of the transfer window. As of this morning the diminutive Spaniard was as short as 4/7 with online bookmaker Sky Bet to join Manchester United after starting the week as an 11/2 chance and turning the year at 25/1! Sky Bet football trader Joe Petyt said: "We'd seen a few bets at big prices over the last month or so but on Sunday night the types of bets we were taking changed. "We saw a few maximum bets at 11/2 and ever since customers have been taking whatever price we put up. He's now just 4/7 but that still hasn't put people off getting as much as they can on the move going through, " he added. It would appear to finally signal a change of heart from the Chelsea hierarchy to the possibility of letting their popular player-of-the-year for the past two seasons move on. This has led to Sky Bet opening a stay/go market and it's 8/15 that he will leave before the end of the current window and 11/8 that he stays. One other possible option for Mata as he seeks to put himself in the frame for World Cup selection with Spain is a return to his homeland, possibly on loan. It's 20/1 that his destination is Atletico Madrid as they chase the La Liga title.

Player of the year for Chelsea two seasons running in a position we'd been trying and failing to improve in the last window.

I'll be gutted, but we don't have the cash to spend on that position when we have other glaring weaknesses.

C'est La vie

I wonder whether United would be better off spending money on their glaring weaknesses.

Given Kagawa isn't getting as much game time as you'd expect him to, Mata probably shouldn't be a priority

They've already played United twice and probably don't see them as title rivals.

I'd love us to get involved, I'd even go as far as coming to a little gentlemans agreement that he won't play against them at Anfield in April if that's a big deal to them.

We can get top 4 this season with the current squad. With Mata we could easily win the league next season. It's worth the short term loss for the long term gain

If we were willing to spunk 30mill on mkhitaryan then we should be all over this, we're a top 4 team, they're not. I'll be pissed if he goes to the scum, he's class. Hopefully moyes would ruin him if ever he did go.

Chelsea are prepared to allow Juan Mata to leave for Manchester Unitedthis week if the champions submit a club record bid of £40m for his services, though the Spain international must also indicate to José Mourinho that he has his heart set upon a move to Old Trafford.
United have yet to make a formal offer for the 25-year-old, who has found first-team opportunities relatively limited at Stamford Bridge this season under the Portuguese, but the London club anticipate that situation changing. A bid of that size for a player who cost £23.5m from Valencia in 2011 would be considered seriously, though Mourinho would still be given the final say as to whether Mata should be released.

The thing is they're definitely going to make a signing every once in a while, including a few in the next 12 months, that will have us all mad jealous.

But that great player will then be coached several times a week by Phil Neville and David Moyes - and within six months will probably be a shadow of his former self.

So just relax and enjoy the ride.

LOL at the drama queens ITT scared of some Spanish midget.

Perhaps there is more pressure to balance the books and 40m for a player they don't want is good business. One site suggested they got in excess of 15M for De Bruyne too though that sounds exaggerated.

As for us, I find it hard to believe we have that kind of money to spend so it's not really a race we can enter.

He's a great player but is he what Utd need? Moyes has Kagawa at his disposal and constantly plays him out wide.
Will he use Mata out left? 40 mill is a lot of money.

They got £16.7M for de Bruyne with clauses as well

While it would be disappointing, he is certainly not what they need. Like us, they need a big, strong midfielder to break up and link play.
Plus, Mata will be playing in Kagawa and possibly Rooney's best position so the potential issues that causes pleases me.

I'm a little annoyed. Didn't you only say we were going to win the league yesterday?

How've things changed so quickly?

Dont think Mourinho will let this happen. Just sounds insane

Disagree, it makes perfect sense.

Mata is surplus to requirements at Chelsea and does not fit with Mourinhos plans they have been spending like a one arm window cleaner and are quite reasonably concerned about managing to limbo under the FFP.

United are not a threat this season but will be next wherever they finish, allowing either ourselves or Spurs to come up for air and finish fourth however would be more problematic as in the long run it increases their rivals.

Yes it does seem barmy to strengthen United but it also has a good chance of weakeneing us and spurs. I really REALLY hope it doesn't go through.

And it most certainly is the kind of signing we should try and get involved in... cracking player.

Ha ha that was tongue in cheek. Us winning the league was always fantasy land this season.
I think our own belief and chance of winning it went with the back to back defeats.

It's very odd that Mourinho doesn't rate him. It's equally odd, and disheartening, that this deal seems to have legs to it.

I don't know about that. Both Mata and Rooney are class; and versatile enough to make it work.

Rooney, RVP, Mata and Januzaj - that's a terrific attack when fit. Good enough to challenge for the top 4 easily.

This doesn't please me. This is the kind of signing that could really give them a huge confidence boost as well.

Yeah, if they pull this off, I wouldn't be surprised if they finished 4th. In truth, I still wouldn't be surprised if they finished 4th. It is Satan's club afterall.
