the entire landscape of football has changed since the last title we won, its not enough now to have a decent manager and some top players who give their all for the club. Its about revenue streams wealthy bankrollers, 70,000 seater stadiums with corporate boxes pulling in millions, squads with millionaire internationals sitting on the bench.

The the formation of the Sky/Premier league the game changed, it became global, a brand, it was the death of the small provincial club like Forest or Ipswich as a force in football, and its unlikely we will ever see that again. Utd after their years in the wilderness were lucky enough to be riding high at the time and became the poster boys for the "new" football they embraced it, expanded their ground floated the club on the stock exchange and became a money producing bohemoth that never looked back with gigantic sporship deals and 3 replica shirts a season crass commercialism, funding the world class talent that they brought in over the last 15 years.

The rest of the league were left playing catch up. We seemed to think it was a fad, a thing that would pass, just keep doing what we always did and success would return we were told. The game may have changed but the basics havent, continuity, family club etc. That led to old boys like Souness and Evans taking the reigns. It didnt, we floundered, and with each season the gap seemed to grow until we were not considered real title contenders. Other clubs, notably Arsenal, moved on mordernised, saw the writing on the wall and tried to adapt, we didnt.

Then the era of the oligarchs arrived and it was clear that a change was required, probably a decade to late in a club that had become reactionary rather than one at the vangaurd. No longer could a club, whatever its history, compete for the best talent on their name alone, we needed revenue. So we put out faith in the hands of two busniess men who promised to be custodians of the club and build that stadium that could see us finally return to our former glories.

And so thats where we are now, constantly struggling to keep up, pushing the boulder up the hill every few years to build a title winning side only to see it roll back down again at a critical point. And as the clubs like City become more numerous so our grip on the "elite" becomes more teneous, where do we go from here in terms of winning the league? a change of owners, definately. A new manager, probably. Serious investment in the squad needed at a time when serious investors are few and far between.

While those factors remain in place its quite likely we will surpass Utds 26 years without a league title

good post. enjoyed reading that.
I actually thought we had our best oppertunity of breaking the duck in the 90's. we had macca, fowler, stan james (when he was good) an incredibly talented crop of kids. I wonder what the fuck happened. I thought our core was stronger than manu's core but they ground out win after win (like they do now) and we missed our chance. I especially thought we'd do it after we beat n'castle at home in what was (and is) the best match I have ever seen in my life but we drew the very next game.
We didn't have James when he was good, we had James when he attracted the epithet 'Calamity'. I still shudder at the thought of him flapping at corners.
there you go mods, themn has thrown down the gauntlet, if I'm so unpopular/disliked, do it, ban me.

Why have you changed your avy ?

Are you hoping we won't realise it's you ?

why would I (a spidey fan) change my avatar to doctor doom.
the mods are having some fun and who am I to stand in their way.

to be fair we came really really close last season. kind of ironic, when I thought we'd struggle we actually challenged and when I thought we'd challenge (this season) we've struggled. ho hum.

So, to summarize, you're wrong a lot. This is an enlightening thread indeed.

Like Sunny I thought we failed to strengthen in the summer and would indeed struggle this year, yes. If you were present during the Alonso saga, myself and a few others repeatedly warned against losing him, as there are few others like him and he was integral to the way we play. Replacing one of the best passers in world football with Lucas is bound to have a knock-on effect after all. I did however think that we might try and adapt the way we play to mitigate for his loss - if we have, it's been barely noticeable.

As for predicting our run last season, no I didn't. But I think I can be forgiven for that given that it's the only season we've mounted a genuine challenge under Rafa.

james was superb when he first arrived, he lost his confidence and then never recovered.
wasn't it in fact james' form that saw fiedle sold?
That doesn't make a lot of sense.

James was not superb when he first arrived. It was in his first couple of games when he piloted his ill-advised tactic of coming for crosses with his hands by his side.

He did get better admittedly but was always slightly dodgy and error-prone. If anything it was his erratic form which led us to sign Friedel, who at that stage wasn't very good either and I think even left the club after James did!

I didn't think we'd challenge this year as we just didn't push on and invest in the team like we should have. No excuses for this years overall form though
I thought we'd challenge as we'd bought a top class right back to replace arbeloa. I thought we'd feel the loss of alonso but not THAT badly. the team is practically the same alonso/lucas - arbeloa/johnson are the big changes this season. torres and gerrard have been injuried but they were injuried last season too and we still came close.
Alonso's impact can often be exaggerated. He only started 27 of our 38 games and we won some notable games in the 11 without him - Man U away is a very good example. Plus he only scored three goals (one penalty) and made three assists out of our 77 goals. To put that in perspective, Pepe Reina made two assists.

Johnson has been injured a couple of times this season but there's no doubt he's an improvement on Arbeloa. And anyone who denies that Lucas hasn't been one of our best players this season simply knows nothing about football.

This season a lot of our stuttering performances have come from repeated injuries in key areas so that we haven't had settled formations. The back four has chopped and changed all season and we've missed Gerrard and Torres again too, often when we've had one or more defenders missing at the same time. Chuck in injuries in wide areas to Riera and Benayoun too and that shows the extent of the disruption

Once the team settles down and injured players return later this month I have every confidence we'll keep improving and I can't see any possibility that we'll fail to get fourth place at least

I know it was the 90's and a long time ago but I definately remember a period were james was good and to be fair to james he didn't exactly have the best defense protecting him.

it may be an oversimplification to say alonso is the reason we challenged and his loss is the reason we've strugged but what else is there? the team is practically the same. last season alonso was highly motivated to have a storming season and I think he had his best season since he arrvied so our challenge coincided directly with the outstanding alonso's return to form. coincedence? maybe, but I doubt it.

Measuring a deep-lying playmaker's contribution to the team in goals and assists is a waste of time. The comparison with Reina adds no perspective at all. In fact, it completely loses sight of it.

As for the Lucas comment, well, words fail me.

Yeah, I'd fucking hate to see 'no assists' Alonso and 'work-horse' Wayne Rooney in our starting eleven.

yeah we had a decent mix of old and new players then with the most promising young group of players that we have propbably had at any time in the last 20 years but there was a lack of discipline throughout the side. We were too gung ho in attack and there were frequent off the field problems with players like Fowler Ruddock Collymore. Redknapp was talented but too injuery prone and I think ultimately Evans didnt have the sort of personality required to forge a ruthless title winning side.

Its sad last year we almost did it but Chelsea were way below par and Utd started slowly, we just lacked the belief when we got out in front, thats a combination of pressure and inexperience, we played our best stuff last season only after we had squandered a great lead. At the start of the season rafa seemed to have hit the reset button in terms of his cautious approach despite enjoying our best ever run of results when we played with more attacking freedom. The loss of Alonso is a factor but not to the extent that some make it out, was he as vital to us as Ronaldo to Utd? not likely

Now it appears we are back to square one again as we have been so many times in the last 2 decades

I echo your sentiments, John.

I do think though that the bit in bold is the reason why so many of us are content to play for scraps like CL qualification and feel that that alone should entitle Rafa to an CBE.

You know what Avvy, I've never been happy with the CL qualification scraps. But being more realistic than some LFC fans, I've accepted that this is our level currently. Last year we overperformed and this obviously got our hopes up for this year. There's been plenty of that over the last 20 years, so we can't blame Rafa entirely for that!

However, to start a thread reminding us of the fact its been 20 years, is the sort of thing a Manc rat or a Blueshite would do (not that they have anything to crow about!).

Its bleeding obvious, of course we're not happy its been 20 years, of course we're not happy with the position we're in, but our title winning escapades of the 70's and 80's do not and never gave us the divine right to expect we would always be in with a shout - although plenty of LFC fans at the time acted that way. I distinctly remember in the 84 season being blase about the treble. Maybe it was my age or maybe, I had become so used to us winning trophy after trophy.

However, I don't need to be reminded by doom mongers on here, how long its been, how shite we may be now, how this season "is better than last" etc etc.

Its all become very boring. So, a bit like the team should be, I'm concentrating on one game at a time. I don't even know who we're playing next week.....ok I do, but I'm not focussed on it!

Good post that Spoin, I wish I was old enough to remember the glory days like yourself (not saying you are an old fart or anything!). But from my perspective getting my hopes up every summer and saying 'THIS IS DEFINITELY OUR YEAR' every August is part of the ritual. It has to be done. You know what is like to celebrate a league win, I don't. I am so desperate for Liverpool to win the league so I can experience that feeling. Is it better than Istanbul?

and closing in on the 26 years that it took manu to win their first league title since the last one.
what's really despressing is right here right now are we any closer to winning the league than when rafa first took over? another thing that is despressing is there are now a lot of liverpool fans who weren't even BORN when we last won the league title.

Oh fuck off!

I started the thread to start a conversation and nothing more. I have realistic expectations and I actually want the manager to continue next season so I didn't post to rub anyones nose in it or wind anyone up. if you find the thread so distasteful fuck off to another thread. you have posters like redstar who take time and care to respond rather than one line profanities (bravo! well done!) if you don't like it fuck off to a more interesting topic no one is forcing you to read any post on this site.
