Every time I've watched the video since, I still get nervous when Gudjohnsson shapes up for that shot. I was convinced at the time that he was going to bury it.

I'd forgotten meanwhile that Biscan had been subbed on by then. This doesn't apply to him so much, but the number of bit part players who contributed at vital moments in that campaign was just unreal.
Yeah, I still expect him to score on replays.

I think it does apply to him. He played in the game with Xabi suspended. Played against Leverkusen and got an assist I think. I remember him having a stormer in one of the group game too. Deportivo away maybe?

There were a fair few others who stepped up in Istanbul on the big night itself: Smicer with two vital goals despite knowing it was his last game for the club; Cissé who came on and frightened their left flank with his pace before scoring one of the penos; Baros who was instrumental in the 3-3 equaliser by putting Stevie through in the first place and then preventing Nesta from running into the area in time to clear the ball after Dida's save; Traore - TRAORE for pity's sake - with one brave and crucial clearance off the line. That night we provided the ultimate proof, if any were needed, that it's a team game.

He might have had a space the width of that football plus another inch to put it into so that it didn't end up in the back of our net... Anywhere else, and we're not going to Istanbul.
