According to the Villa forums we're buying Bent and loaning them Carroll. Probably BS as every bit of ITK info out there.
Buying him for how much though?
If its £20millon like others have suggested that's the £50mill we had to spend on strikers all blown. That said, any deal which sees us getting rid of Carroll, I could get on board.

*cough* Darren Bent's black too. Just sayin

IF the move happens and he scores goals, at least we can say it's 35m for him and 5m for Downing 😛

I think it would be foolhardy to shift carroll. He's barely had a consistent run in the squad. He'll come good. The ban for suarez will show this i'm sure!

I heard we were looking at Bent

Cheers mate. Same loan/transfer deal?

Carroll with a long run alongside Steven Gerrard will look a whole different person.

Stevie always gets the best out of strikers, he just knows how. Ask young Michael, Robert & Fernando whether they played better with his service.

That said, Bent at the right price would be a blessing, but that interview with Lerner clearly states he wants a lot for him to appease the fans (reading between the lines obv), so perhaps it wouldn't be the right price.

How much is Champions League qualification worth over Europa League next season? That answer will decide whether he's worth what they want, cos IMO that's what we'd get as a minimum, possibly a cup too. We're only missing goals people, that's it, add goals to our game & we'll be the best in form side in the country.

Gerrard and Bellamy hit the three best crosses of the game in the 20 mins they played. With servicw like that he can get on the scoring charts. I hate the whole floating cross in to the box thingy thata lot of our players hit.

When he does play Carroll needs to be told to stay fairly central and play as close to the box as he can.

Too many times when the ball comes in he's jogging about 10 yards out side the box.

i think he's tryin to get it from deep because no one wants to pass it to fucking feet when he's in the box.

Everybody does it these days, and I cannot understand it. Hard, OUTswinging crosses hit from the byline are (a) the most difficult for defenders to deal with and (b) the most likely to provide the likes of Carroll - or whoever else may be coming in on the end of them - with the necessary chances.

Provided you don't dwell out wide for about ten seconds before crossing - giving the defence a chance to reset themselves. The attackers get a similar advantage from a good early cross that a rugby team does from quick ruck ball.

Absolutely, but that's another argument for hitting them hard and swinging them away from goal, which is a lot easier to do quickly than the floaty curler in from the "wrong" wing which we get so often nowadays.

Watching Spurs last night and Walkers crossing was so much better hit than Johnson that it was grim to watch. Always hitwith pace and direct, wheter on the ground or in the air. So much more difficult to defend against.

And I think your partialy right Ross, the step backwards before hitting it works much better when you have a right footed player on the left and vice versa. Just look at Young, and Downing last season obvs.. But a cross hit with pace swinging in is always difficult to defend against.

I'm not talking about the winger stepping back Hansern, I think the wrong wingers thing is generally a bad idea unless the winger is an outright goal threat on his own when he steps in.

What I meant was if you're attacking quickly down the wing the defence need to retreat, and you can catch them out while they're retreating. We always give a defence time to set themselves after they retreat back, allowing them to set themselves and get ready to defend. A winger taking a step back, allows the defence to stop where they are and ready themselves for the cross, making it harder for our attackers.

That said our wingers usually have to wait for someone to get in the box

Any cross hit with pace will test the defence, but inswingers less so IMO. They come in the direction of defenders' heads rather than those of the attackers, whereas the opposite is true of outswingers, which is why I reckon we should get back to outswingers. Someone like Carroll would benefit big-time.

The fact we havent scored a lot doesnt worry me, at least we are making the chances. At least we look like scoring apart from not actually putting them away. I for one believe Kenny will be working hard on ensuring our players work harder with shooting practice.
Are you serious? It worries me, because if you don't score, you can't win games - simples. I think we all know we're not blessed with any natural and consistent goalscorer, and honestly until that is addressed its going to be increasingly difficult to challenge for champions league regularly.

We need to be less worried about beating the man & more worried about getting the ball in the box.

Deep crosses, hit hard & fast will work wonders for Carroll, they're more likely to provide second balls & go to feet or allow the striker to use strength instead of just height, both of which are what he needs.

Thankfully stevie provided three within less than ten minutes of his introduction, proving he knows what the big man needs.

I think the thing that annoys me is that every corner/free-kick where the ball bounces toward the 18 yard box off a player, we have no-one standing there to pick it up.

Last season, Meireles or someone was usually there to try and twat it back into the box/pass it to whoever struck in the corner but this year the opposition seem to get this ball more often than not, leading to us hastily defending their counter attacks.

Yeah, second balls go astray to often but only in the final third.

Another thing thats easy to fix is a striker or midfielder following up into the six yard box when Suarez starts jinking past players, it'll pressure the keeper meaning he may not make a save & also allow them to follow up with a shit when Suarez inevitably hits the bar or keeper having beaten four defenders.

At present Carroll is too static to do it & the ther midfielders unwilling to commit to getting inside the box, both of which worry me for different reasons.

Yeah, agree with both of those.

None of our players gamble on where the ball is going to land at all.

To be honest i never saw much of carroll at newcastle so I've no idea what his real strengths are . Can someone please fill me in .

Because here i don't see much at all . He's not a great finisher , he's not amazing in the air in an attacking sense , he doesn't boss defenders around, he's shit slow with poor positioning . I guess his link up can be ok at times but equally he has some shocking passes and lay offs . The only thing he's looked good at is defending set pieces and corners against us . Brilliant .

And why are so many of you sure he'll come good ? What is going to change ?

One of the biggest reasons I miss Kelly is because he crossed the ball so much better than Johnson does.

He does that because he doesn't have the ability to play his way into the box or play in a more intricate fashion. So he swings it into the box, I.e. the easy option.

Johnson is a better footballer.
