Reds duo score as U19s impress for their first win of the season.
Noel Blake’s Young Lions made a winning start to the new season, putting on an impressive and slick display against Slovakia on Thursday night to secure a comfortable victory in Crewe.
The Head Coach had spoken in the build-up about wanting to examine all of his options ahead of October’s European Championship qualifiers in Belgium and he certainly got the chance, with all 18 players selected getting an opportunity to impress.
It was a high tempo start to the game too, with captain Jonjo Shelvey and midfield sidekick Josh McEachran linking well from the off and there was a sign of things to come in the 14th minute, when goalkeeper Patrik Le Giang misjudged McEachran’s delivery from the left but did just enough to divert the ball away from the crowd of England attackers which had assembled in the area.
England didn’t have to wait much longer though, as they were gifted the lead in the 16th minute. The chance came when Slovakian midfielder Patrik Jacko sloppily gave the ball away and all of a sudden England had a three man attack bearing down on goal in the shape of Shelvey, Ross Barkley and Michael Ngoo. Barkley slipped a sideways pass to Ngoo, and the Liverpool ace made no mistake to expertly finish and open the scoring.
It could’ve been 2-0 after 21 minutes, when a flowing England move saw Ezekiel Fryers break forward and trade passes with Shelvey into the area, only to drive a low left-footer narrowly wide of the far post.
Slovakia really weren’t getting much of a look in at all and England came close again shortly after the half-hour mark when Barkley broke clear on the right. He cut a pass back for Ngoo, who in turn found Shelvey, only for his left-footed effort to be hacked behind for a corner by Zoltan Cibula.
The half could have ended with a goal too, as Ngoo made a meandering run across the face of the area only to see his eventual shot fly narrowly over the bar.
After controlling the first half, England initially found their opponents a little bit more troublesome after the break but they almost had a second goal in the 56th minute. The move was started by Shelvey, who picked out McEachran with a fine, raking pass over the top. Whilst the Chelsea man made his way into the box from the right, Shelvey had also caught up with play and when McEachran pulled the ball back to him, he looked favourite to score from eight yards but slipped just as he struck and his effort was blocked.
England were still in control too, and Shelvey almost brought the house down when he attempted a long range lob from inside the centre circle after spotting Le Giang off his line. Unfortunately, it just dropped wide of the target.
Shelvey finally got the goal his performance deserved though. Substitute Shaun Jeffers was tripped 25 yards from goal and when Shelvey stepped up to take the free-kick, he gave Le Giang no chance by curling the ball into the near corner.

Good win for U17s in front of a healthy crowd at Grimsby.
England won their first game of The FA International U17 Tournament with a convincing 4-0 win over Australia in Grimsby tonight to leapfrog Portugal at the top of the group.
Goals from Matthias Fanimo, Courtney Meppen Walters, Raheem Sterling and Nick Powell secured victory for John Peacock’s team and all four strikes were memorable.
Both sides made changes for the second half, England bringing on Sterling, Powell and Max Clayton for Fanimo, Nat Chalobah and Jordan Cousins.
Two minutes later, it was three and it was a fine individual goal by Sterling with virtually his first touch as he ran from 35 yards to drill a fine effort across Tibbles from just inside the box.
The Liverpool midfielder showed he has pace to burn with a similarly electric run to play a one-two with Meppen Walters, but this time Tibbles did well to dive and block Sterling’s shot close in.
Two more changes on 56 minutes for Peacock’s side saw Ellis Plummer and Robbie Cotton on for Matty Regan and Jake Caskey. Then, Hallam Hope replaced the hard-working Morgan up front for the final 16 minutes.
England U17: Garrett, Regan (Plummer 56), Cousins (Clayton 46), Magri, Chalobah (Powell 46), Hendrie, Caskey (Cotton 56), Walters, Morgan (Hope 64), Fanimo (Sterling 46), Henshall. Subs not used:- Pickford.

Win over Portugal clinches tournament victory for U17s.
England were crowned winners of The FA International U17 tournament in style with a well-deserved 3-1 success over Portugal at Scunthorpe’s Glanford Park.
Two goals from Everton’s Hallam Hope and a third from Crewe's Nick Powell gave the Young Lions a convincing victory in difficult conditions - and ensured they ended the competition unbeaten.
Knowing only a victory could guarantee them glory, the home side started well, moving the ball from left to right waiting patiently for an opening.
One nearly arrived as early as the fifth minute, but skipper Nat Chalobah couldn’t find room to shoot in the six yard box following Robbie Cotton’s deep cross from almost on the corner flag.
Blackburn midfielder Cotton tried to go from provider to scorer when he tested keeper Jose Costa with a deflected effort and Hope came close to getting on the end of Max Clayton’s pull-back, after the Crewe youngster had done well to stay on his feet when evading a challenge in the box.
The breakthrough finally came seven minutes later, courtesy of Hope. Good work on the right flank by Powell – who had himself gone close moments earlier with a cross shot – saw him whip a teasing ball into the middle and the Everton front man used all his power to force home his second goal of the tournament from close range.
England’s second of the afternoon didn’t take long to follow. Within five minutes of going ahead, Hope had used the outside of his boot to lob Costa from inside the box, in a move started by Courtney Meppen Walters’ sublime ball out of defence.
Aside from a Alexandre Guedes shot, that he beat away at his near post, England keeper Pickford was a virtual spectator for the rest of the half.
Instead it was the Young Lions who ended the half again on the front foot, with Raheem Sterling’s neat foot work opening up a chance for Powell, but his header was held by Costa.
Any hopes Portugal had of getting something from the game rested on a good start to the second half. They had the perfect chance to register on the scoreseet within 60 seconds of the restart, but Sancidino Silva’s control was disappointing as he attempted to bring down Luis Cortez’s ball behind the England defence and Pickford raced off his line to gather possession.
It was to prove costly too, as clinical England made the result certain soon after. Powell had plenty of work to do when he picked up the ball on the left, but a mazy run took him into the box before he rifled a cracking right-foot shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle.
In the 50th minute, Joao Cancelo curled a free-kick around the England wall and into the far corner to get Portugal a reward for their effort, even if their football had largely lacked a few ideas.
Substitute Adam Morgan made a positive impression after coming off the bench with a string of jinking runs.
But the fact England were unable to add to their goal tally did not matter, with the hard work having already been done.
England
Pickford, Cousins, Magri (Regan 50), Meppen Walters (Hendrie 41 (Caskey 62)), Plummer, Clayton, Cotton, Chalobah, Powell (Henshall 50), Sterling, Hope (Morgan 65)
Subs not used Garrett, Fanimo.
