Moroccan international playmaker Younes Belhanda was named African player of Ligue 1 on Thursday it was announced by Radio France International (RFI) and France 24 after a vote by journalists.

The 22-year-old - who succeeds Ivorian Gervinho for his performances when Lille won the title last season - has been outstanding this season for Montpellier, who are on the verge of landing their first ever title.

Belhanda edged out Marseille's Cameroon defender Nicolas Nkoulou and Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who plays for St-Etienne and was the joint top scorer at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The award is known as the Marc-Vivien Foe prize in memory of the Cameroon international who died during a Confederations Cup match in Lyon in June 2003.

Result:

1. Younes Belhanda (Montpellier/MAR), 2. Nicolas Nkoulou (Marseille/CMR), 3. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (St-Etienne/GAB), 4.Henri Bedimo (Montpellier/CMR), 5. Aymen Abdennour (Toulouse/TUN)

Previous winners:

2011: Gervinho (CIV)

2010: Gervinho (CIV)

2009: Marouane Chamakh (MAR)

Just go and fucking sign him then. Forget long fucking saga's just go to Montpellier with a bag of cash and an agreement they can loan our kids or something and sign him NOW.

Then sign Jovetic, Hoillett and Rhodes and we can all fuck off on our summer holidays.

Aye mate. I was going to say, if we don't sign this guy promptly, then we probably won't at all.

Exactly. And next year we'll be hearing how he wont come to us and its Citeh or United for 40m

Wouldn't that be nice. Imagine we moved quickly to sign all our primary targets before the Euros.

I expect we'll be told that nothing will happen until we get a new Director of Football. So we'll still be scratching around in august looking at reserve keepers or something.

If KHL can claim Agger, I'm claiming Belhanda, 'cause I mentioned him first. 😉

According to a French journo we're in the driving seat in signing this lad

Yeah, we're picking him up from Manchester Airport and then dropping him off at the Etihad. Part of the Bellamy deal, we agreed to provide City's chauffer service.

MANCHESTER CITY could be in for a shock if they switch their sights from Eden Hazard to Montpellier’s Younes Belhanda this summer.

Moroccan midfielder Belhanda is viewed as an alternative target to Hazard, if the Lille ace proves to be the one that got away from the Etihad Stadium.

But clubs making enquiries about Belhanda, 22, have discovered that Montpellier value him at a similar level to Hazard – and that is £25million.

Premier League champions City clearly saw him as an option who would come considerably cheaper than Hazard, 21.

Belhanda’s valuation, though, is on the increase, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and Liverpool also linked with the French-born talent, who opted to play international football for Morocco.

City, meanwhile, face competition for Belgium’s Hazard from Sir Alex Ferguson at Man United, Harry Redknapp at Tottenham, Chelsea and Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

And that could see his transfer fee increase, too, from £25m – the most quoted figure – to nearer £30m.

Hazard’s standing has increased even further with his award this week as France’s Footballer of the Year.

That’s the second year in a row that the Lille livewire has received that accolade – beating a host of top players in France’s highly-regarded league in the process.

It’s hardly surprising, therefore, that he won’t come cheap.

But neither, clearly, will Belhanda, either.

Montpellier's Younes Belhanda keen on move to Premier League

Montpellier playmaker Younes Belhanda has reiterated his desire to secure a summer switch to England or Germany.
The Morocco international has been linked with a move to the Premier League for some time, with north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal said to be keen.
They could be about to scrap it out for his signature, with Belhanda of the opinion that he needs to take on a new challenge.
The 23-year-old is under contract in France until 2015, but he claims interest in his services is steadily mounting.
Belhanda told L'Equipe: "Next season? I don't know. I have contacts but nothing concrete.
"I want to go to England or Germany. I believe I am made for that football, both physical and technical with a lot of risks.
"My wish is to play in the Champions League next season, but I could sign for a club with big history.
"I will not learn anything else in France. I know how we play here. I need a new mentality, new excitement."

Could it be us? Cos if there's one thing we have in our favour, it's our big history! 🙄

He's no Er-iksen, but we're the only club not in the CL with a big history in England ... unless he's talking about Forest? 😉
