It has taken the footballing mind of Guardiola for myself and the majority of the footballing world to see the sheer quality of Xavi shine through. This is the team he was made for and presides over every game with an iron fist of footballing poetry that very few teams can keep up with, let alone handle. His positional awareness is flawless, his passing assisted with laser precision and his constant ability to find space on and off the ball in congested midfields whilst being at the centre of another 10 pass move is just awe-inspiring and fully validates my continued subscription to Sky Sports every month; regardless of Andy Gray.

I suppose I don't just find Xavi important for these qualities, but more for allowing the world to see how a system like this can be played, and how it can succeed consistently at the very top level. Although Messi is the spearhead of the team and without doubt the best player on the planet, would any of Barca's regeneration have been possible without Xavi?

Why has it taken Guardiola for Xavi to shine?

He was fantastic in Rijkaard's Barcelona whose team was just as stylish, if not more so.

Im sorry, sooooooooooo fucking important that deco, van bommel and EDMILSON started in front of him against arsenal in RIJKAARDS champions league winning team!! Check the stats...Xavi was on the bench and wasnt important enought to come on that night!

Kenis right....Xavis important because he plays how Guardiola would have wanted to play in the modern game!! And god is he a top class player! I love watching him more that Messi...because he sees's more of the ball!

And they were lucky to win that, weren't they?

Don't think that was really the point was it though? Its more how Guardiola's Barcelona have very much brought Xavi's qualities to the fore, and whilst I always believe hes been quality, does look like hes playing on another level in recent times.

It's not the point, but it is a one off game in which tactics were (questionably) altered, so I'm not sure to what extent you can use it as an argument. There is certainly no way he'd ever be dropped for a game like that nowadays, but the original post, as you say, was intended to highlight his qualities more than anything else and I think these were very well showcased in Rijkaard's side also. I think it was in Rijkaard's last season that Deco became less influential, played less and Xavi started to get forwards more and exert greater control on play in the final third.

Maybe I'm underestimating the role Guardiola has played in re-energizing this Barcelona side, but I do often feel that in the haste to suck Guardiola's cock, the foundations laid by the previous regime and their own fairly impressive achievements are rather forgotten.
