heebies is still going

Le Bateau went into liquidation in april or something. The DJs moved to magnet i think.

Never heard of the other two!

Le Bateau was a great place 10 year ago.. Great little bar with decent music a nd a fantastic atmosphere... I remember the days when it had Voodoo in the basement..

Le Bateau was the only place that you get decent requests in, used to have proper sound DJs

I think the Jacaranda used to run by that rascal Alan Williams. He once teamed up with Tarby to pinch Terry-Thomas's diamond cigarette holder while the comic was performing at a Bessie Braddock charity event.

...Er, where am I?

That name ( Alan Williams) is interesting to me. It comes up in a song Christy Moore sings called "Does this train stop in Mersyside". As far as I know it was first recorded by a Liverpool group.

Whats the story with him GK?

He's best known as 'the man who gave away The Beatles'. He wrote a book with that title. Managed the Quarrymen/Beatles and then gave them up. He spent the 70s trying to sell those awful recordings of the band in Hamburg, seemingly taped via the nearest toilet.

Thanks for that GK. The line in the song goes " Alan Williams in the Marlborough Arms, he gives a story out to everyone"

Sounds like a guy with lots of stories to tell ok.

I haven't heard that, thanks for the tip, I'll have a listen. Yes, Williams - I think - is still going and still the storyteller. he used to give tours around the city, managing to position himself right in the middle of every anecdote!

18 pubs instead of "holes". Each pub is assigned a drink (could be a pint, a double & mixer etc) and a par. each "go" at drinking is counted. e.g. down a pint and its a hole in one. do it in 3 bursts and it is 3. It is basically a themed bar crawl that encourages drink downing. Great fun!

Song is by Ian Prowse who used to be in Pele and is now in Amsterdam as well as doing solo work . He has recorded with Christy Moore and Elvis Costello .
Alan Williams was the Beatles ex manager as well as nightclub empressario . His ex wife Beryl used to be landlady for a few of my mates and she was a lovely woman .

Yeah I've been reading a bit about him since Macca gave me the pointer. Seems like an interesting character. Was also reading Prowse's background to the song which is interesting. It has a great line in reference to Hillsborough.

"Yorkshire policemen stand with folded arms, while people try to save their fellow fans"

Thanks for that cloggypop
