OK so let's say my prediction of Silva arriving on the 31st August is a wee bit out. We need a winger to compete with Riera - who would you suggest ?

For me I proffer this gent, fast, direct, takes on his man and has a hell of a shot plus a good cross on him and this is the latest today :

Jonas Gutierrez has admitted he would love the chance to move to Greek champions Olympiakos.

The Argentina international's representatives have been approached by Olympiakos about a possible move.

i thought he started quite brightly for he geordies and certainly hi spedigree is good, if he constitutes an improvement n Riera is debatable.

I think we should try and get the turkish player Arda turan.

for a gamble...

we don't need a winger to compete with riera - that's babel - we need one to replace riera.

hence, if we can't afford that then we shouldn't buy anyone.

Frogfish, last year you recommended Quaresma.

He wasn't too bad at Chelski

We need someone to compete with Riera, eh? What about Babel?

Nope, Jose reckons he's the next Figo

I still like him - a lot.

I also started a thread recommending Catermole about 6 months ago - I was shot down in flames over that one too.

I like these off-the-wall players 😉

Exactly. What about Babel. He's had 2 seasons and people are still saying 'he'll come good'.

I hope he does, I PRAY he does, but my initial reaction to that is 'will he like fuck'. I want Silva but if we can't get the spectacular at least let's get someone reliable. Gutteriez was a good winger before he went to Newcastle (say no more squire) .

Babel was excellent for much of his first season and has looked as if he's up for it during this pre season. Why do you want a "reliable" winger to push the reliable Riera for his place in the team? We don't even play wingers but rather inside forwards.

I said this last time the subject came up and I'll say it again:

The last thing we need is a 26 year old attacker who in his 7 seasons of first team football has managed a total of 6 goals in over 200 appearances.

He didn't do anything there and can't have played in more than 5 games anyway.

different standards really, if he was here we'd all have said how difficult it was to come in january and adapt to a new league and that we couldn't really begin to judge him until a full pre season etc etc.

Because I have no faith in Babel. Guttierez can play on either wing and does what Babel fails to do - attacks the last defender and then either comes inside or crosses. He wouldn't be expensive at all and whilst no better than Riera offers something different and sometimes that is all that is required to break a team down. United, for example, have multiple options on either wing depending on the situation the are faced. We are very very limited.

Even Insua has a better cross on him than Babel. This season it's really last chance saloon for our resident rapper as far as LFC is concerned.

I just feel like we are still lacking width and we are not over endowed with attacking options. When Riera fails to spark - as he does from time to time - then we really have to revert to non wingers playing out there, Benayoun or Babel and then we get very narrow. I like Riera for his ball retention, that is important for our game, but his failure to create danger and draw defenders out creating space in the box is the weakest aspect of his game and against more defence minded teams we need a more creative edge. Guttierez is available, cheap and would offer that something different we don't possess at present. Anyway it doesn't matter because Silva is coming !

His spiderman goal celebration is among the most cringeworthy things in the world of football.

I'd be praying for him not to score.

What makes you guys think that Silva is a much better option than Riera.
Do you guys know that Riera is actually keeping Silva out of the Spanish starting line up?

Riera has one premier league season under his belt and I think he performed quite well. Wasn't he the reason for our great form in the beginning of the season?
Anyway I think signing Silva is unnecessary.

He's a Houllier 1st team player type signing.

He's OK, from what i've seen, had a particularly stong game vs united at OT, and has shown both attacking and defensive elements to his game.

Having said that, he's not someone i'd sign, it'd just be lowering the standards too much, rieira and babel are two players a level above him.

Has better control, shot, and a footballing brain.

If you watch him closely, he has alot to his game actually, quick train of thought, picks out right 1st touch passes, knows where the goal is, threads balls in. Wips in a 1st time delivery. His general all round play is actually very very good.

Don't get me wrong Riera is very good at certain aspects of his game, it's just that if Silva blossoms, he could be one hell of a player for us. Riera needs to build on what he offered us first season, because to be fair, he actually did remarkably well, jus a tad inconsistent.

All in all, I would say from what i've seen, Silva has more potential to solidify a 1st team slot than Riera.

I watched the WBA v Toon game the other night and after starting well, he turned to utter shite. I think I'd prefer Dossena as a wing option in fact.

There is no point signing anyone for the left if they are not a significant upgrade on the players we have there now (Riera and Babel). We could especially use a direct player with pace to offer balance to Dirk's workmanlike play on the right. Riera is doing well in the Spanish team because he offers something different for them. For us, we need that added pace on the wing that Riera doesn't have. However, I like him as a player and don't think we should waste money stockpiling "decent" guys on the flanks. Upgrade or spend the money elsewhere.

Those who think he's "terrible" and whatever else obviously haven't watched him very much, because he's not. He's good.

I'm not advocating signing him, because he's no better than Riera, and as well know - we need world class. But Jonas is by no means shite. He's techincally capable, can keep the ball, has two good feet, and looked out of place in that Newcastle side at times last year. His career, form, and ability are all going backwards at that shithole, and he needs out. Not to us though.
