William Carvalho

That was so last year ... From what I've watched of him, he's overrated.
I don't know enough about Carvalho to judge him. Have only seen him play for the u21s and the senior Portuguese team but I'm desperate here. We need someone in midfield who can protect our back line. Hendo has admittedly done well but it's clearly not his best position. I don't know if it's just me but none of our current midfielders is a good enough ball winner. Some aspects of their game is good but more often than not its like there's a big hole in midfield.
What I'm saying is, if the rumours are true I understand.

Apparently we're trying to sign William Carvalho. Reported by Abola

Is it the same rag that "reported" in August that we were "on the verge" of signing that Talisca guy for £36M (who ended up in Besiktas on loan)?

Carvalho? Again? That poor fucker's been linked to a dozen Premiership sides, every transfer window for the last three years.

Usually with a fee of over £30m, and most often with Arsenal.

The same. Anyway, think James Pearce of the Echo have deflated the Carvalho transfer balloon already.

From what I've seen I would absolutely love a signing like William Carvalho. Could turn into a real midfield maestro both defensively and in attack.

Apparently Liverpool representatives are in Lisbon to seal a deal for this Chap, anyone know anything about him?

I just know he is a defensive midfielder, that's is rated at around 30 million Euros

Like a Yaya Toure-light type of player with potential to be in his class some day - commanding, effective, strong, great vision and skill. Exactly the type of player our midfield has been lacking for years.

If we can pull this off suddenly our January window turns out to be very successful imo.

DM/CM type.

Apart from his obvious defensive abilities (big lad, strong tackle, good in the air, reads the game well) he's got a great shot on him and is decent enough on the ball to be involved further forward on the pitch. In a perfect world he could turn into a Yaya Toure type of player.

Fuck me, I'd be overjoyed with him. I've wanted him for a few years now.

It's rare we actually try to sign someone I want, so this is probably bollocks.

Well, that or he's over the hill & shite now.

Also, kinda the unsong hero for Portugal during the Euros last year for me. Just made them tick from the back and swept up a lot of attacks without drawing too much attention, just got the job done.

Let's not pretend he's got an Alonso-like range of passes in him, because really who has got that apart from Xabi himself, but I think he's quite able in that department as well with a good variety of short, long and direct ones, when needed. He can mix it around a bit.

I really hope this link is true..

BRING ON THE WILLIAM!

Still speculative. I assume Liverpool would have to finalize issues regarding Lazar with Sporting. But I would welcome strengthening the midfield if it is a quality player. In the period we og into now we might look more at a Box to Box player with defensive skills than a pure Defensive Midfielder?

Is he quick?
He's not fast. He's not totally slow either.

He does have amazingly long legs it seems and when you read the game well that's a rather effective combo. But you don't want him isolated against pacy wingers for instance, but that is kinda not his job either.

Isnt he already 24? Been talked about and written about for several years now, but no one have bought him yet even though Sporting have had financial trouble and would probably sell for a decent fee.

The few times I've seen him play he just has looked a bit slow and ponderous. Is he good enough? Thats the question. For 25-30 mill I'm not sure. How much would Paredes cost?
