A few questions about Lovren for everyone – just want to understand what's the consensus on him now. He's been here for two seasons – the first one couldn't possibly be worse, but 2nd one was pretty good (especially after Klopp's arrival). Here are my questions:

  1. Which Lovren is the "real" one – the god-awful one or the good one?
  2. If it's the latter, then why did he struggle so badly for so long? If it's the former, how likely is he to return to the bad form again?
  3. Compared to other defenders in the league, how good is he? Would you still buy him if you could do it all over again? Does he still have room for improvement?

I think hes great, pretty much always have.
Mr Rodgers defence was always a shambles and our keeper is a joke so I think this one is the real one.

He's the good and the bad one - the sum of it all.

He's just an average defender - who looked good when he was protected at Southampton. And he looks good for us when our pressing works and when Sakho is used to challenge for every high ball.

When things don't go right ahead of him he's not very good.

the one we saw for majority of last season was the real lovren.

being paired next to skrtel was the problem.

Isn't that more or less true for every central defender?

I agree with the general point however. I think he can be a decent number two, the Cahill to your John Terry, the Ottamendi to your Kompany and so forth but he's not the guy you build your defence around.

To a degree, yes. But some defenders are good no matter what the circumstances - those ones are worth spending 20m on

Goalkeepers always look shit when they have a crap defensive set up in front of them. Keep the ball away from your goalie and he'll look great.

Similarly with defenders - give them lots to do and they'll make mistakes. Protect them and they look good. No wonder Sami and Carra looked good with Mascherano, Alonso and Gerrard in front of them, as did Reina.

Defending does start from the front, when we get this right we'll improve. Suarez was the perfect illustration of this.

He's glacially slow and gets done 1 on 1 almost every time. But he'll be fine if the rest of the team is humming. He's easy to improve on.

It was, but that in no way shape or form excuses the mistakes that Lovren made, which were generally unforced, schoolboy individual errors.

Yes I can see what you're saying, but having a calamitous defence around you wrecks your confidence and makes you more likely to make daft errors. It's a bit of both him and the defence around him as far as his first season was concerned. This season he's been great.

He deserves credit for his upturn in performance. His improvement can not solely be attritubted to Klopp's pressing. It does of course help the backline, but the back line itself is shit; Mignolet, Moreno and Sakho/Skrtel have all had poor seasons whereas Lovren has been consistently good all year.

I don't think he'll ever be great - as in another Sami - but he can improve further alongside a better keeper and in a better defensive unit.

Certainly one of our better players of 2015/2016.

Worth £20M? Ha, no - not yet. Probably never.
