Tom Hicks dismisses controversy and promises Liverpool will spend

Hicks insists that Liverpool will bring more big-name players of the calibre of Torres to Anfield
Tony Barrett
Tom Hicks has shrugged aside the controversial resignation of his son from the Liverpool board by claiming that the club’s debt problems are not as severe as those of Manchester United.

The Liverpool co-owner also vowed to spend “big†in the summer transfer window.
United’s problems gave Hicks an opportunity to divert attention from the storm at his own club and he duly took it.

“Our debt is very manageable (see Man U) and we never use player sales for debt service,†Hicks Sr wrote in the e-mail, responding to concerns from a supporter that Liverpool will not be big spenders in January.

“Our interest on £200 million is about £16 million. The new stadium will be the game changer. January is a poor quality market. The summer window will be big.

“We are working hard on the new stadium. We have an excellent management team and manager. We know we need more depth on the squad and will address it this summer. We hope to have a stronger second half of the season.€

I like this bit "The new stadium will be the game changer"

to follow on from "we're gonna build that sucker"

His head is in the clouds. How can somebodyy so stupid get so wealthy?

I actually admire the way Hicks is prepared to answer e-mails. I just wish I could trust a single thing he says when he does so.

Are we talking about the same person here, Tom "Chapter 11" Hicks?
[/quote]

Errrrm, you relaise Hicks himself isnt bankrupt, right? But rather, that he forced the Rangers into voluntary, so that he could pass on the outfit to whom he wanted to rather than be held to task by those who the franchise owed money to?

Not that I want to get in the way of a blind bit of bashing, like...

Errm. I dont understand the takeover business, but isnt that worse.

No. It shows that the bankruptcy is, in effect, a legal stunt by Hicks which relates specifically to the debts incurred on the Rangers and doesn't indicate that he personally is skint.

Aah.. Okie...I still dont understand this stuff, but what you says makes some sense..Essentially Hicks is no now not responsible for the debts incurred on the Rangers..Basically he is not obligated to repay the Rangers debts. Amazing, over here in the US, I miss my credit card payments for a month and my APR shoots up like anything and I have trouble finding a decent interest rates for loans. Whereas we have people like Tom Hicks, who have now bankrupted 2 out of 4 sports franchises and he still owns the largest pad in Dallas.

You and me both, mate.

When did football stop being football?

Nice one, Parry.

Peekay, I do understand that the bankruptcy is a legal stunt. I've had a few interesting chats with some of the CorpFin guys here at work. Hicks' stunt poses an ethics issue in terms of corporate governance and responsibility. It also begs the question of fit and proper criteria used by the FA. Pompey's administration can be contributed to glaring failures in both corporate governance and fit/proper criteria.
