Here we have both our greatest players ever at the club at one time, but who is the absolute greatest?
Kenny, the King of our dominant side for two decades, the man who won European cups and leagues aplenty, who scored goals and created the finest partnership weve ever seen.
Or the local boy who has over 100 goals from midfield, who has scored in League cup, Fa cup, Uefa cup and European cup finals, who has dragged a team at times single handedly through bad times and to glory.

There can be only one.

I kind of feel for Gerrard in these polls. Kenny was part of some of the greatest teams ever and we also had years of success with those teams. We've had limited success with recent teams but, it has to be said for Stevie, he's stuck with us through thick and thin and Giod knows he's been surrounded by some shite. Kenny is also a lot more charismatic. Stevie, however, has scored some wondrous goals that really had no right to be scored. For me, the two top players for LFC ever. Kenny just edges it though but that's not to say Gerrard is not a LFC legend. He is. And deservedly so.

I have obviously not seen Kenny play so I can't make this comparison. I will say though, that from the clips I've seen, the Liverpool player who's made for best viewing pleasure is John Barnes. Clips are obviously not much to go by, but is there a chance that Barnes figures in this discussion?

One of Kennys best goals wasn't even televised.

It was an away match (Old timers disease can't even remember who), and he had walked past the oppo goalie 4-5 times, and the goalie bounced the ball just as he passed.

On the sixth time Kenny swung around as the goalie dropped the ball, and stuck it in the back of the net.

Its simple for me.

Steven gerrard.

He's given me the greatest night of my life and beyond the final, too many barnstorming goals and performances to count.

I fear that without at least one title under his belt he'll be unfairly underrated in the future.

Never be underrated for me HC. True genius of a footballer and a true LFC legend.

No I appreciate that mate.

In 30-40 years time though I fear he may not get the recognition he deserves.

Not just a former great.

THE FORMER GREAT.

No chance Gerrard will ever be underrated.

To a certain extent he will be, because he's such a quality player who's had to lead teams essentially filled with dross.

But fans will always respect his achievements and if I were to suggest a player he'll be most compared to it would probably be Billy Liddell.

I vote the King. Some folk quote the lesser teams in which Stevie's had to play as an argument for giving him the nod, but for me the King's status as no.1 is actually underlined by the fact that he played in a top team which won everything in sight (as opposed to the far lesser teams with Stevie in them) and yet he still stood out in the way he did.

Well if everyone shares scms general concensus then there's nothing to worry about.

The same with pelé, standing out in the 1970 brazil team should enhance rather than detract from his legend.

Trust me on this. Kenny by a country mile.
One or two of us have fallen out over my position that Kenny is the best player Britain has ever seen, when you tale into account the whole package of player, professional and man.

I am not even sure if it's between Gerrard and Kenny to be honest

regards

I never thought kenny would be surpassed for me. But i think Gerrard is a better all round player.
Kenny is the best man though of course.

Gerrard
Kenny
Hansen
Barnes
Kennedy

Thats my top 5 Rouge men.

I like Carras answer - he said it was tough to call, but if you take into consideration the teams the two played in, then it is remarkable the impact Gerrard has had....

....having said that, I still think Kenny!

I think Gerrard is the most incredible footballer I've ever seen in my life actually. Kenny was a sublime footballer, but he played in the same position all the time, in a team that had been winning trophies on cruise-control before he arrived and which went on doing so after he stopped playing. He takes enormous credit for both of those facts, of course, but Gerrard really is something else. He could play practically any outfield position in our team and be better there than most of the specialists we've ever had. I truly believe he would have stood out as the greatest even in that 87/88 team.

I totally understand why people are voting against him here: he's not the most charismatic or even necessarily the most likeable of men; he's not been our best ever captain by a long way; and he's won very little compared to Dalglish. But I agree with Oncy - in pure footballing terms, he's unsurpassable. And I think Kenny would say that himself.

[/quote]Yeah i quite often come back to this question. If you faced a team of 11 Gerrards against a team of any other player who would win?
Id be tempted to say he's the greatest all round player of all time. Fuck it, i'll say it. I think as a football player he is unsurpassed.

Kenny played RB once or twice during his Celtic days, and in midfield for them and us a few times. Where I do agree is that he didn't look the same player on those occasions, whereas Stevie could and did excel wherever he's played.

The point about who each of them played with can cut both ways. Maybe Stevie might have stood out even in the 87/88 team, but what we know for certain is that Kenny definitely did. BTW they didn't cruise to many more trophies after he hung his boots up.

Has to be Gerrard. Look at the teams he played in compared to Kenny!

Kenny had it easy.

Eyewash.

Kenny barely played in the 87/88 team. And I did say he takes great credit for us continuing to win after he stopped playing - precisely because he was our manager at the time.

He played about a third of that season if I'm not mistaken, bringing himself back about this time in the New Year for the run-in.

The point I'm making about when he stopped playing is that our success didn't then go on much longer. We never did replace him adequately as a player.

Kenny
Souness
Hansen
Gerrard
Keegan

I know it's a subjective matter but I'm amazed that Oncy can do a top 5 without Souness and Sunny can do one without Hansen - I would imagine these 2 would be 100% certainties in most people's top 5.
