Whelan: Rafa's days are numbered....

Ronnie Whelan has accused Rafael Benitez of prioritising the Champions League in order to secure a job abroad, and the Liverpool legend also believes the manager's "days are numbered" at Anfield.

Speculation is surrounding Benitez's position once more after Liverpool were defeated 3-1 by Fulham on Saturday. The loss at Craven Cottage was the club's sixth in seven games in all competitions and leaves them nine points off top spot with 11 games played.

With the score at 1-1, Benitez substituted Fernando Torres to general bemusement and later admitted that he had done so with Wednesday's Champions League game against Lyon in mind as the striker had been nursing a groin injury.

Whelan has used the incident as evidence for his theory that Benitez has already abandoned the league - a situation that would not sit well with Liverpool fans as Manchester United aim for a record 19th title this season.

"It's all gone wrong with the manager and he's shown exactly where his priorities lie,'' Whelan told RTE Television. "He wants to win the European Cup so he can get a job in Europe. For me, his days have got to be numbered at Liverpool.

"He's taken players off who are the only players who are going to give you a chance of winning the game. And he drags them all off because he's got a game on Wednesday.

"When I saw the team I thought he's not bothered about this game. He's putting all his eggs in one basket and I can't see why he's done it."

Conspiracy Theory / bollox or truth?

i always liked our ronnie - true champion, indeed a winner. the sort of bloke who believed that winning trophies was how we measured success. none of this revisionist shit that rafa's been talking about recently.

on the brink rafa, you're on the brink.

A great player he may have been, but that is one of the most retarded things I have heard in some time. Rafa's european rep is sound, he doesn't need to do anything in it this year to enhance it, even if he were to leave tomorrow there would be a dozen top clubs knocking on his door. He wants to progress in Europe so he has some money to spend in January, cos he'll get fuck all if he doesn't.

I loved King Ronnie.

Understated player in my book, only cause he was surrounded by a team of bloody legends.

Whelan has not liked Rafa for a long time....

He was on Showtime here in the ME last season several times, and even when we won, he tried to stick the knife in, so what he says means nothing to me....

He has never said anything positive (that I know about) about Rafa...

Talking a load of crap if you ask me....

Yeah after spending unnacessarily for injury prone Aquilani for 20mil and another 17mil on Johnson. Yeah of course he doesn't have enough money. Idiot!

How were the Aqua & johnson purchases unnecessary???

2 out 2 in....

and why do you have to insult people that have a different view than you???

Over the top....

I said in January you fucking flid! As far as I remember the most he has spent in January during his time here was on Morientes for £6.3 Million, we also got Agger in January for £5.8 Million. He's never had big money in January and he sure as hell won't this year coming if we fail to get through to the knockout stages of the champion's league.

We can sign Defour for less than that and he was fit last summer. Aquilani is an injury prone player. As for Johnson, we had Arbeloa and Rafael sold him for someone as average in defence like Johnson. Simple.

Give Aqua a chance, and Arbeloa wanted to leave, and Johnson is better...

Don't know to much about Defour so i will not comment....

When the dynamic duo are in full flow, there is no reasoning. Their words are infallible.

I dont know much about Defour either, apart from the fact that hes injured and corresponding with alex ferguson

Lol.

Whelan was a magnificent player but he's a manc-loving boozer who talks crap these days. This absurd cod-psychology that leads idiots to claim any manager WANTS to lose games is becoming an epidemic. Complain about someone's mistakes, fine, but don't project on to them some illogical notion about which games they want to win and which they're happy to lose. It's not worthy of a five year old.

Hes also a liar. I heard him preview the match on RTE radio on Saturday. He predicted a draw, but never once mentioned his "belief" that when he saw the team he was convinced that Rafa had given up on the league.

Rafa is unlikely to get any funds to strengthen in the January window so the time has probably come to blood a few of the Reserves. Might as well if the results aren't going change.

I wonder if Kenny* will respond to his triple-chinned former colleague's comments.

*That's Kenny Dalglish, Glock and friend. You know - that blinkered rafa lover.

Feel sorry for the King.

He came back to what he must have considered a dream job, got shat on in his first few months and is now being gently ushered back into the job he first walked away from.

*The second part is purely speculative bollox of course*

I'll second that and add that, if he has any problem about what's going on, he'll deal with it behind the scenes, not in the media for a fee. Whelan's intervention is not only daft, it's despicable.

actually he would have been fit if he came to us because he got injured during the season, not during off season.
glocks got a point and even though i rate aqua i still think he screwed up by wasting 20million on an injured player. as for johnson i dont agree with you there glock because arbeloa wanted to leave and johnson is awesome
