What would you do?

So, I just went to the cash machine to get some rent money out for this month. The cash machine near me has been getting a bit dodgy of late. When the cash comes out sometimes it doesn't come out evenly and one or two of the notes end up turning at a 45 degree angle or something. Not a massive issue and not enough to prevent you from withdrawing cash by any stretch.

So, I've asked for my cash, it's come out, done it's little rotating thing, and I've taken it out. However, the cash machine kept making the beeping noise that tells you your cash is there. I waited about 15 seconds, and then the cash machine whirred and beeped again with a message saying 'Cash retained. Contact your bank'.

Has this ever happened to anyone before? What did you do? What should I do? I've just checked my account online and the money is already registering as withdrawn. Do they know EXACTLY how much is in each cash machine? Could I claim that the money didn't come out and then I got that message? Could they confirm it either way? And if they could would I be up shit creek for trying it on?

Decisions, decisions. I figure if I'm going to contact my bank, I should do it pretty quick but I don't want to get myself in a whole heap of trouble.....
