Very tough to back up a title win with another as we’ve seen over the years.

5 different winners in the last 8 years!

So what would a successful season look like?

Is retaining the league the only thing?

Win the league, as much as we love European glory there is always an element of chaos in knockout competitions. The league is the acid test, if you win that you're the best around.

I voted the league, but I'd actually be happy with a cup win and competing in the Premier League.

IMO the thread title and the introductory poll ask two different questions, so I haven't voted. I wouldn't describe achieving the minimum acceptable level as "success" - it'll do just for the moment, but no more than that.

Minimum: option 4 above, i.e.a good showing in the CL and second (no lower) in the league.

Success: winning one or the other, preferably both. Domestic cups don't figure at all in this AFAIC - they're nice to be going on with, but ultimately they're just staging-posts on the way to the prizes that really matter.

Retaining the title is our number one challenge for next season and that is what we should be judged upon.

Its a huge achievement to win the title of course, but it's a different achievement to retain it and become consistent challengers. By definition that is where we are at and so only winning the league would be a success on those terms.

Don't get me wrong, if we finish second or third it certainly won't be a 'sack the manager' issue or anything like that. I'd personally love to see us win the CL again or even win the FA Cup again (as it's been a while) but if we don't retain the league title then that is still an important thing that is on our to-do list.

If I'm honest the league is what we need bottom line, And to be truly a great team we need it 3 season on the trot

But to be greedy I want the league, the champions League and the fa cup next season

Fair call. I’d like to see us win the FA Cup just because Klopp hasn’t won a domestic trophy. The double would do nicely.

I loved Milners interview where he said City failed to retain the title both times he won it there. He’s hungry to go again and exactly the mentality we need in as many players as possible.

It would be a fantastic achievment to win it back to back. And then celebrate the league win with fans in the stadium this time.

I’d have another league title over everything else. But a good seaon would be a FA cup win, competing in the league (at least 2nd) and at least the quarter final in the CL.

An FA Cup would be nice, it's been a while but competing for the league is a must and I think it'll be harder next year, if United and Chelsea's "potential" is anything to go by. Both are only a couple of shrewd signings away from competing. Fortunately both have utter bellends for managers, so they could just as easily go to shit.

They'll almost certainly both be in the European places but IMO the Chavs are more likely than ManUre to be in title contention. My bet is Solskjaer's just not got the stature or, I suspect, the tactical savvy to take them that last step up. Lampard could develop those things in time, though he's still learning the trade at the mo.

I’m a 100% confident Utd will never win the league with OGS. He just doesn’t have it.

Lampard is a different story.

Neither squad has the experience to win it next year. It’ll be us and City again.

Obviously retaining the league has to be the number 1 focus.

But it's been a while since we done a cup double, or even won a domestic cup so I'd happily take those as well as the community shield.

If we did that and got 2nd, it'll still have been a very good season.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over finishing 2nd and winning a cup, and I am happy to see us win any trophies, but I couldn't consider it a success as a season.

Success is retaining the league, and to go from winning it by the distance we did this year to not winning it at all can't possibly be considered a success.

League or CL for me as well. It wouldn't be a scandal if we perform well but dont bring one of them home, but winning big again really needs to be the expectation.

It depends upon transfer activity. If we sign nobody and city spend half a billion, then retaining the title is a tough thing to ask. But if they sign a load of expensive shit to replace their best players, then it would be inexcusable to not win it again.

So far so good but we are in Klopp's era, we need a few league titles not necessarily back to back, to firm up on his legacy. He is phenomenal as a manager of modern times, we are the luckiest club to have him here and it would be naive of the club not to take full advantage and support him with signings of his choice, not that this hasn't happened but targeting the league year on year has its own demands. We have Klopp as our manager and his brigade of brilliant lieutenants, we deserve bucket full of trophies.

I couldn't disagree more with everything you've said. Totally wrong.
You wouldn't be happy with 4th, I would, why would that be wrong? We're not spending, our rivals are. if one or god forbid two of front 3 is injured, what are our alternatives?

I want 20 and 7 before Klopp leaves in 2024. An FA cup would be nice too - we haven't won it in ages.

Why would that be wrong? Two reasons. One: it'll mean we've failed to ride the wave of our title win and strengthen to stay ahead of the pack. Two: that title win has been achieved by a record margin so there is no way on this planet that we should be "happy" with 4th now, signings or no signings. We beat Barca with Mo Salah's stand-in playing like a boss and scoring twice. We should demand - and we should expect - nothing less under any circs.whatever.
