Here are some stats I've compiled on Riera for this season. Makes for interesting reading.

Out of 8 games where Albert Riera has been available but unused we have lost 4. 50% of games where Rafa has not used him, we've been beaten. Out of those 8 games we'e also drawn 2. So only 25% of games actually won when he's sitting on the bench unused.

Out of 14 games where he was available and either started or came on as a subsitute, we've won 10, drawn 3 and lost only 1. 70% of games won when he's part of proceedings.

Of course stats never tell the whole story but clearly we're far better with him than without him. Why isn't he being used more?

Out of the 8 games where he was an unused sub, 4 were home, 4 were away.

Out of the 14 games where he was used, 7 were home and 7 were away.

I always feel Riera gives the team a far better balance and he is more talented on the ball than the rest of our midfield players, other than Gerrard. I was pissed off he didnt play last night. I still have no fucking clue what Rodriguez actually has 'in his locker'. So far from what I've seen - that shot he had right down Almunia's throat just about sums him up.

I have been really disappointed by Rafa's use of him this year.
I thought last year he showed all the things that people are saying here and how the team seemed better balanced. In fairness he did tail off a bit as the season went on, but still worth his place but rallied again just before the end.
I was hoping to see him step up a rung this year, but Rafa being Rafa saw things differently.
I would not mind if we had a shit load of better options

regards

Maybe Rafa thought Maxi did a decent job against Everton and thus deserved to keep his place?

Just a thought.

He didn't deserve to keep his place. And even if he had, his non-performance at the Emirates deserved a substitution, which never came.

Honestly Ryan.

Rafa made the right substitution in bringing Babel onto the left wing Ken.

Of course, it would have been better had Riera started there, but that's agiven.
