What the fuck is going on with Riera?

Is he injured?

What is going on?

If he is genuinely fit, I just can't understand how he hasn't been used in the last two games. It makes no sense.

He's being rested for the City game. Eh, skully?

what the fuck is going on with Aquilani also?

He's puking bile as we 'speak'.

Aqua apparently was ill tonight

I'd be sick of not playing too

I mean, what did Maxi do today?

I can only really remember Insua attacking down the left hand side. Maxi popped up on the right and in and around the box at times, but by and large he just passed the ball back to midfield in the few occasions he gained possession.

I'm by no means Rieras biggest fan, but it's fucking baffling stuff.

Sounds like the lads on RAWK will love him then

Id rather have Riera in the team than Maxi right now. sure its early days for the max but i think riera would have offered more today.

As I said earlier, he's Rafa's new toy. Riera is SOOOO last year.

I had him in the LMS competition. Boooooooooo.

Yep, Maxi seems to have taken over from Riera. Odd.

Also, the substitution of Lucas was a bit of a WTF. How many games might he have done that in before, yet he never did. No, we've seen it before with Crouch: Rafa waits until Lucas has started playing quite well before treating him as though he's still playing badly.

Fuck (Rafa) only knows Keni.

No Riera = no width. It's that simple. Why Rafa would play the right-footed (and so far mediocre) Maxi over the naturally left-footed Riera I'll never know. Add in the fact that with Kuyt on the right we are very narrow = Rafa needs shooting.

I'll continue to support Rafa on here in the main, but it's wtf baffling incidences like this that consistently make even his most ardent supporters speechless. That and the lack of balls to really go for the game tonight.

Strangely I was happy to see Babel come on for Lucas tonight. Don't get me wrong I thought Lucas was playing well and doing a good job but the Babel sub signalled an attacking intent and he almost pulled it off too with that move/stumble/shot.

Riera is an utter mystery. I've got no real issue against Maxi who can be a good player but he's about as suited to the left as Yossi. It honestly - and I'm sure it's rubbish - but it honestly looks almost as though Maxi was guaranteed a certain number of games in a WC year before signing.

Maybe Rafa thought Maxi did a decent job against Everton and thus deserved to keep his place?

Just a thought.

What did Riera do to lose his place so easily to Maxi? Maxi didn't earn it from Riera. It seems it has been automatically given it from the moment he arrived. I think both would do a similiar job for us on the left but it is odd that Riera has been frozen out a bit.

He didn't though Ryan, he was exceedingly ordinary.

Riera is clearly our best wide left option but Benitez has frozen him out and denied us the opportunity of seeing whether he could improve on what was a decent first season. I suspect he'll be off in the summer.

I don't agree with the "ordinary" part. He did a decent job, retained possession very well, and I guess Rafa thought that sticking with a winning team was the way to go.

As for Riera, he may well be off in the summer. If he goes, and we replace him with someone better, who gives a fuck really.

Wasn't it rumoured Riera and Rafa had a bit of a fall out at the start of the season.

I'm personally not a fan of Riera, his work-rate is a joke and he strikes me as a player who thinks he's better than he is.

I suppose we could have done with him tonight mind.

Yeah, but how much is it going to cost to get someone better? Money we don't have.

First post in my 'Frustrating' thread 2 hours ago mate - I complained about the omission of Riera there.

Players who have started at LW this year: Benayoun, Aurelio, Riera, Babel, Maxi

Why would we get rid of Riera again? We'd only get someone who "can do a job" there anyway, yet another player who can supposedly play at AM, or on the right or left.

I really don't want to get into a 'we should sign bla blah blah...' debate, but 7M for Adam Johnson could prove to be fantastic business.

Well that's what I've said. Only sell him if you're going to get someone better.

I don't think he'll be sold anyway.

Riera is our best option on the left regardless of his lack of pace. What he does offer us is width and balance like none of the other players who have played there. His omission last night was an error on Rafa's part.

Agreed. Considering Citeh are having to consistently pay over the odds for players of late, 7m isn't much of a gamble for a player of his age and potential.

He's not started too badly for them either.
