what made you choose your favorite player

One or two people had bees in their bonnets about "fast centre-backs" being the answer to all our problems, so Sami obviously didn't fit the bill for them.

OK it can be handy if a CB has a turn of speed, but it's far from being the number one priority. However fast a CB may be, if a forward gets past them they are usually fucked!
 
First it was God, then it was Gerrard, then it was God again for a brief spell, then it went back to Gerrard.

Reasons why I picked them - They were / are our best players.
 
Boring as it may be, I can't see past the King. Not only was he a superb individual performer, he was also a consummate team player who was always looking to bring others, notably Rushie, into the game around him. I admired his team ethic as much as I did his skills.
 
People went on about Hyypia for years saying he'd lost his pace (even though he never really had any) and couldn't hack it any more. It was probably the same people that are saying the same about Carra.

Suarez could go on to be my favorite ever player, if he wins us a title and sticks around. Currently it's still John Barnes for me, cos he was good when I 1st saw him as a child.

[/quote] loads of people where saying 'his legs have gone' and wrote him off about 4 years too soon if I remember rightly...I think they forgot he was always slow anyway.

Maybe around the time of that united game when he got ruined but it turned out later he played when he was sick?

Strange you should mention Dirk there ... My fave ever is probably Barnes just because for a while he was pure Boss in a way noone else could match at the time.
You writing Dirk there made me think how much I love the guy, 110% every fucking time, and perhaps because he's been so much maligned we as a group of fans have maybe failed to appreciate the fact that he is a fucking diamond of a player .... Not flashy or nothing but a player we should all admire IMHO consummate professional loyal and very very good to boot. Good shout for fave player.
 
Fowler for many obvious reasons then Carra for his dedication, commitment, his love for the club. And I play a bit like him... 8)
 
Robbie Fowler. The lad scored 30 odd goals as a teenager in one season. That will never ever happen again and if it did now, no one would be able to buy him. An absoloute genius in his pomp.

Agree with the dignity and honesty (shouldn't you always be?) and great levels of talent but loyalty is bit of an odd one? Let's face it, if you're not that good but decide to stick around the club as a sign of loyalty you'll just get a load abuse for being a bit of a money-grabber.
 
It's a combination of all of the above which makes them great. Not one aspect alone.
 
I've always picked players with a lot of "Cool"....by that i don't mean players with spiked hair and gay boots. I mean players who seem to have a lot of time on the ball, that they are able to pull out something absolutely outrageous while looking totally nonchallant (Think Zidane, Begkamp, Berbatov etc...)

So my favorite Liverpool players have exibited that attribute in one form or the other...

The one exception I have for this rule is Stevie G.

He is the opposite of Cool. He is Busy! But how can you not like the man who has been central to everything good about Liverpool in the last 12 years! He plays with a never-say-die attitude when he is on the pitch and i love that spirit and will power he shows. It has been instrumental in us punching above our weight on many occassions (finishing 4th on Ged's last season, CL2005, even the season we finished 2nd under Rafa). He is the one midfielder who can claim to have properly unlocked Torres's potential. Excluding the end of Fowler's career, we have only played with two genuinely worldclass Forwards...Torres and Owen (Now Suarez, but unfortunately Gerrard has been injured). He unlocked those Forward's potential better than anyone else in world football. He has even helped Heskey and Crouch punch above their weight. That is exactly why i can't wait for him to come in and play with Carroll and Suarez....I promise you, you can expect some cracking football. I give you permission to get excited.
 
Hyypia had 2 spells of getting stick.

In his last few seasons it was the 'he's past it phase', turned out those folks where wrong. But years before that when he was captain he was getting stick and wasn't in form, he eventually lost the armband to Gerrard before regaining form.

My recent favorites in no particular order:

Steve Nicol was my favourite ... I think for his versatility, but may also have been the good looks. To this day my default computer password is based around my strange Nicol preference
 
The only thing strange about that is the "good looks" bit. ;D Stevie Nicol was one of the greats. We've had other utility players before and since (our current skipper being the greatest of them all IMO) but not many were equally good in all the positions in which they played. Stevie Nicol was, and his loyalty to the club was in Carra's league. Excellent shout.

My wife is Irish, my kids are Irish ... I am, I'm afraid, English. Ang "good looks" was toingue in cheek ... Nicol was part of a really ugly team in the late '80s

Didn't know that he'd grown up a manc fan until long after it was too late... He's my man.

Besides, he scored enough against them in big games to make up for it during his career.

Was only kidding. But has shown a little too much respect for them since he left us for my liking.

He was a great player though. A vastly underrated tackler, spoiler and hard man. He used to settle scores quietly and efficiently in the midfield mayhem and it took a player of great class to do that in those times.

I loved his curler v Utd in 83, his horse impression in 82 but his late equaliser v Portsmouth in the 92 semi will long in the memory. Was there that day and it was mayhem on the North Bank when he scored. Got the tickets through an agency the day before and only got to the agency 2 mins before it closed. It was fate!
