Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson insists he is at Anfield for the long haul after coming under pressure in the job.

The former Fulham boss took over at Anfield in the summer but has overseen a poor start to the domestic campaign, with the Reds taking just six points from their opening eight games to sit second from bottom of the table.

There was speculation before Thursday night's goalless Europa League draw in Napoli that he was preparing to stand down but Hodgson insisted nothing could be further from his mind.

Instead, the veteran boss insists he is a fighter and he will battle to turn around the fortunes of the club on the pitch.

Ridiculous websites

Hodgson told Sky Sports News: "You read these ridiculous websites that we have and resignation has never once entered my thought and, what's more, never will.

"I pride myself on being a bit of a fighter, I pride myself on being able to stand the bad times.

"I've had a lot of good times recently - Barclays Manager of the Year last year, great accolades here and there and everywhere - I realise in football you don't get the accolades all the time, sometimes you have to bite the bullet and fine.

"It disappointments me that there are so many ridiculous websites, every day someone tells me that there is a new rumour about something that's supposed to happen and I think it's rather unfair that serious people use those rumours and then ask me questions because I shouldn't even be answering that question as it's literally never entered my mind and, what's more, won't enter my mind.

"I'm here for the long haul, I'm here to do a good job, I came believing I can help Liverpool rebuild and get going again, the players are very much behind everything we're doing."

Progress
He added: "So as far as I'm concerned it's work in progress, it's problematic at the moment because it's work in progress at the wrong end of the table, it's problematic because we're losing and not winning but there's only one thing to do with that - get out and play each week, play better, get the wins, get up the table and then you'll see my smiling face more often than my scowling one."

Frank Rijkaard has been backed with Sky Bet as a possible replacement for Hodgson but the Liverpool boss said such speculation could not concern him.

"It doesn't bother me one little bit," he said.

Roy if you are reading this 'ridiculous website'. Close the door on the way out, cheers.

If he references his 'Manager of the Month' achievements at Fulham in defence of 1 win in 8 games at Liverpool one more time, I'll eat my fucking monitor.

Of course we'll have to sack him. He'd get no compo if he resigned. Did anyone seriously think he'd resign tonight?

azackly. the idea that someone who's actually openly discussed the necessity of the club paying him off if he's sacked resigning is pretty bloody stupid.

Has anyone read the comments he made in regards to the possibility of Torres being hunted by the Scums ?

Someone on the news site said this, "To give even the faintest idea that our most hated rivals could even have a sniff at getting our star striker is just stupid".

And the way he sucks up to the Scums, it's as though Roy is afraid of them and holds them in reverential awe. It's pathetic. And that in a nutshell, explains why we're languishing at the lofty heights of 19th (lofty in Roy's head) and the scums way ahead of us. Because he already thinks it.

Paisley and Shanks would have laughed at the Scums.

Yes, that was one of the worst answers ever. Either just don't answer it in a politic way, or make a short, declarative, definite statement.

He's been a mess, but I am surprised to see some people hoping in various internet haunts hoping we lose to pile the pressure on. We need wins by any means neccesary, and even though he's clearly not the right man, I hope he mounts an argument for himself staying until Xmas, simply because it'll mean we aren't in the fucking relegation spots, which scares the ever living shit out of me.

I thought it might be one of those "mutually agreed" leavings

so hopefully we'll mutual this sucker today

Overall I'm sorry Purslow's left but, if it helps to clear the way for Roy's departure as well, some good will come of it.

that was a pretty cutting piece from the echo. wow, even the unofficial liverpool mouth piece isn't fighting roy's corner anymore.

Yeah, "ridiculous websites", well done Roy, cos those "ridiculous websites" & one in particular, (rawk obv) pretty much kept Rafa in a job for at least a season longer than without their support.

Silly old fool.

If I hadn't met dreamy, based on these press statements I'd be quick to think roy is db

Rafa had massive support from the fans, which he used to play off against the owners.

okay, do you think the board is swayed one way or the other with internet opinion? genuine question.

Most boards would look at fan support, I'd say.

Whilst it wouldnt necessarily sway the Board, it's clear that they would notice.

Internet boards are one source they'd look at,sure.

if they are swayed by internet opinion then roy is a gonna as every liverpool board (well every board I am a member of) the vast majority (we're talking 70% upwards) want him out but I don't think the board is swayed by internet opinion. I will say though if the fans openly i.e. at the match, called for roy to be removed then I think the board would at. liverpool however don't do that, the closet we'll get to that is the dalgish chant.

I would so love the crowd to sing 'you don't know what you're doing' because that is patently the case in this instance.

Maybe the Blackburn game is the perfect for a Boycott? Hicks and G is out. We will probably not have a goal to cheer about either. A halfempty stadium in the league will show the true feelings for this one.

* I don't think the board pays attention to the internet
* I think the closet you will see to revolt is the dalglish chant
* if there WERE a revolt i.e. fans openly called for roy to be removed, the board 'may' pay attention
* I wish the fans WOULD openly call for roy to be fucked off

They may not pay attention to 'the internet' as a whole, but just consider that more than a few people who did post on rawk now work for the club, & they have a HUGE traffic on there, which in turn does indeed polarise the opinion of fans.

Their support for Rafa gave him time, I'm bloody sure of it.

you think so, foxy. CL football for evey season rafa was here, the season he failed to secure CL football he was sacked, how did RAWK help to prolong rafa's liverpool career?

Well when we have got to the point that Fat Sam brings a bottom team to Anfield as slightly favourites, and is able to brag about their chances to win this one, then I dont see any fucking problem with sacking him. Offer his own resignation would be to nice gesture towards him!

Because he had massive fan support.

And used it well.

Against the owners.

absolutely, because there are so many strikingly obvious points during his tenure when he should have been sacked but was inexplicably kept on. there was the errm, well yes just let me think a minute - i mean just for a start i can say, erm, let's see...2006, was certainly, erm absolutely. oh! firstly there was may 2010, wasn't there! when he was, er, sacked. yes.

Do you think Rafa used his massive support from the fans as a crutch against any possible ideas by the Board/Owners who might have wanted to sack him at different points during his tenure?

You don't,pete..but that's fine.

I do though, and I don't think I'm the only one who thinks that.

Was it wrong of him to do so? Of course not, any manager would have.

But the facts do probably speak for themselves, the man's been gone for over 5 months and there are still so many out in force valiantly defending his memory from any perceived slurs.
