Newcastle United’s calamity summer has continued with the emergence of a picture on Twitter purportedly showing Papiss Demba Cisse in a city centre casino, after he refused to wear the club’s new kit due to his religious beliefs over the money-lender sponsorship.
Cisse was allowed not to take part in Newcastle’s pre-season training camp in Portugal due to the on-going dispute between the striker and the club after money-lending company Wonga were named as their new kit sponsors.
The Senegalese international, who is a practising Muslim, refused to wear the kit on religious and ethical grounds, with his agent Madou Diene claiming: “He feels it is immoral”.
However, the picture appeared on social media site Twitter on Monday, appearing to show Cisse at a table in Newcastle’s city centre casino. The picture will have infuriated Newcastle officials, with Muslim belief condemning gambling as prohibited, harmful and destructive to society.

I'm not sure I believe that is him but his excuse was bullshit beforehand anyway, weren't they sponsored by Virgin Money last season? Who provide mortgages and other money lending services...

Just don't play football and go paint orphanages if you have a problem with morality, I wonder what his religion says about blonde bimbos, sports cars and fancy houses.
 
So a Muslim who objects to money lenders on religious grounds, but does not object to gambling is a hypocrite?

Fair enough ... so all those catholics who are anti abortion, but don a condom every night or eat steak on good Friday are also hypocrites, right?

Or is .maybe the British press judging johnny foreigner by a different set of rules?

In fairness when was the last time a player from one of those religions do the equivalent of what Cisse may have done?

I can't remember a catholic or a CofE use their religion to force a move.

Cats licks haven't had to miss meat on a Friday since the 60's.

Pope John Paul ( George Ringo ) 2, said it's okay to wear condoms to prevent the spread of AIDS in the 80's.

Isn't anybody who picks and chooses which religious beliefs they'll champion / disregard, depending on their present needs / wants?
 
Yes & no - as I said before, I would say a large minority (if not majority) of practicing catholics are passionately anti abortion but have no issue with using contraception; if you prefer an example more based on faith - there are many who are regular mass goers but don't actually believe that they are really receiving the physical body of Christ when the take communion.

If that makes them hypocrites then the whole world is hypocritical. I was merely pointing out that it seems far more folks would be happy to accuse a muslim of being hypocritical and lambasting them for it than they would for western religions.

I think if Joseph O'Flaherty refused to play for his team because they are sponsored by "Rusty Knitting Needles Back Street Abortions Ltd" he would get less criticism than Cisse is getting for his erstwhile stance against money lenders

For the records I am a very lapsed catholic & very pro choice and I never believed the body & blood bit .... but I am also a raving commie and own my own house, so I too am a hypocrite

Am I embarrassed to discover that I own an executive box at St James's Park? Indubitably. Will this stop me from trying to drive Newcastle out of business? Absolutely not!
