No, I do think he's missing some Spanish sun and lifestyle, and has done for a while. And we've just signed a £17M fullback - who will play regardless of form to justify his fee (like Berbz at United), leaving Arbeloa with no room in the team.

Plus he's got the 'greatest team in the world' coming in for him, who've signed some of the worlds best players.

They're reasons enough without bringing 'Carra-gate' into it, because like I said, I don't think that's a big deal; especially when you consider the above factors.
Keane wasn't played regardless of form to justify his fee, so why would Johnson.
I think he was to an extent - you're right though, it's just speculation may have been a bit harsh on Benitez

Regardless, if Arbeloa leaves we won't have the luxury of benching Johnson anyway.

I really don't think we should sell him. He's a good player, I don't know why he gets so much stick on here.

no idea anita. it's the carra debacble. when carra has a go you're suddenly shit.

I'll second that Anita. He's a very good fullback and I hope he doesn't leave. I also like the fact that he is equally adept at playing at left back, where I reckon we need the cover.

Like Alonso, I also see him as a proper Liverpool player. Hardly any fuss and seems a down to earth, good guy.

I like him as well but if he wont sign a new contract we may as well take the money while we can.

Exactly. We need that kind of flexible player who can provide cover when needed. I think we'll find ourselves real short again if we sell him.

He should be offered a new contract.

I'll be sickened if his last appearance in a Liverpool shirt is that ridiculous fiasco with Carragher.

I'd rather keep him for a year and let him go for nothing than give those cunts another player on the cheap.

arbeloa's epitaph;
you've been 'carra-erd'

Agree with you both - I like him and has been a terrific signing by Benitez.

But in the circumstances it's understandable why he wants to leave and you can't blame the club for that.

Errr, you do realise that if we keep him for a year and get nothing for him those cunts will still get him on the cheap. Except we will get fuck all in return.

£5m for Arbeloa isn't a lot even when you take into account he only has 1 year left on his contract. I think he's a very useful, versatile player but if he wants to leave and return to Spain then there's not much point standing in his way.

Losing Alonso will be a big blow and I'm struggling to think of viable, available options to replace him.
Shame we let Arbeloa's contract run down. I thought that wasn't supposed to happen anymore?

As for replacing Xabi... I don't think it can be done really. Please don't sell him Rafa.
You can't have your cake and eat it too bunnyman. If Xabi is not sold now, his contract will run down too, as he sure as hell is in no mood to sign a new one. So do you just sell regardless of replacement?

Last season, Arbeloa would have signed a new contract if he wanted to sign probably. What makes you so sure he wasn't offered one?

arbeloa will play plenty next season. we should only sell him for a good fee. 5 million is not a good fee!

its clear that johnson will also sometimes play right midfield with arbeloa behind him. also in certain european games arbeloa will play more than johnson.

if all we now buy is a quality left midfielder ala silva then we have the strength in depth necessary. if torres is injured we can play kuyt upfront if gerrard is out we can play yossi in the hole. kuyt can be rotated/rested with johnson, riera with new left midfielder.

the only players i see as surplus in our first team squad are really itandge, doseena, babel and i still want an upgrade on lucas

Xabi has three years left on his contract. We can keep him another season without his value diminishing.

Shhhhhhh- I'm bluffing to get them to increase their bid, but you've just fucked that up. Nice work Refugee Parry.

The point is, is it worth taking £5m over having consistent and reliable cover for both our fullback positions and at CB (in emergency) for the season?

If Madrid are only willing to shell out a paltry total, I'd be tempted to keep Arby.

I got fooled by your poker face.

I think an agrement was made between Rafa and Arbeloa last summer when he first wanted out. Rafa asked for one more season to organise a replacement and would let him go. Arby has been a great signing IMO and if he wants to leave so be it. Glad he will most likely go to a club like RM and I wish him all the best. 5M is a good price for him with 1 year on his contract, lets remember he's good not great.

I meant Liverpool's accounts being filled £5m V keeping Arbeloa for a full season as a backup to all our first team back four and then potentially heading off for free.

You can't really, Pirlo is the only other one who has the same sense of the game and how to dictate and caress it, but even he's not at Xabi's level. We'll have to play a different style, more box to box less possession stuff. It might be to our advantage when teams park the bus, but I worry about going up against the big 4.

Pirlo ain't coming to Liverpool regardless of the Alonso situation, forget that.

Selling Arbeloa on the cheap smacks of needing cash back coz of overpaying on Johnson. Not saying that's right or wrong, just the way it is.

I don't think that's the case though, Arbeloa has been making these kind of noises for a while now.

Agree on Pirlo, he's too old and not good enough anyway, but he's the same type as Xabi. Just shows they are a rare breed.

Did he want to leave last season?

I suppose that changes things.

Don't remember reading anything like that tho.

Can anyone really see him displacing Ramos?

Didn't they pay close to 30M for him?

The Ramos situation is weird. I assumed they were going to move him back to CH and use Arby on the right. But given they've just signed Albiol that seems less likely. According to the Spanish press Perez called in Ramos' agent for a chat to determine how to get Ramos playing at the level he was at with Seville. So obviously, there are question marks over him. Weren't there also a lot of stories last season about how he had pissed off the Madrid hierarchy, he may have made himself persona no grata.

And let's be fair no team is going to be weaker for having Arbeloa in the squad.

There were reports that he was homesick and wanted to go but it wasn't widely reported and I think Rafa dealt with it very quickly. How he dealt with it is unknown but we might be seeing the result of it now.
