It's unusual to see the 98th minute of a game without Alex Ferguson on the touchline

Oh hell no, Uruguay all the way.

Nice finish to win it.

I was rooting for a Ghana win because they're quite enjoyable to watch and possess a fair amount of flair, whilst I also quite dislike the American side. I also hope they go on to beat Uruguay because I also dislike them and Forlan deserves no more success this year.

I dunno why but there's few teams I hate more than the US 'soccer' team. I just hate them with a passion.

I'll drink to that. The fact that I got 'em in the 6CM sweep has nothing to do with it of course.

You mean how we don't even care about it as a country that much, have our 3rd, 4th, and 5th tier athletes playing the game and we still manage to win a group which includes a country (Ingerland) that lives, breathes, and dies "soccer"?

LOL

I don't hate Ingerland because there are always a couple of Liverpool players on the squad and it isn't fun to hate a perennial losing squad.

You've nailed it, in a way. What I hate is that it gets laughed off when you lose, and people seem to say we don't care about it, whereas when you win, the bandwagon grows daily.

The US won the group, ahead of England, due to a gifted goal, then got knocked out with the easiest shot at the semis they'll see for decades. Clearly something to crow about.

Every world cup the US beats a side, or in this world cup, gets gifted a draw, which causes everyone to say "look at the new level of the US, this is a sign of their development". Then they are out.

And all the while I have to tolerate substandard commentary, punditry and the like, to try and placate "mainstream" viewership. Great, Kobe Bryant is watching, is that supposed to persuade me to care?

I hear what you are saying but to true US fans this loss really hurts in a big way and I think even from your perspective you are being very harsh saying that our world cup success this year is entirely due to luck.

Oh yeah and I hate bandwagon fans just as much as you but don't worry they will disappear starting right now that we have been eliminated.

Well, of course it hurts real supporters, and of course it isn't due to luck, but I think people got carried away with the idea of gutsy come from behind victories. It's one thing to do it against better teams who are dominating, come back and find a way to win, but when you find yourself shipping simple early goals against poor opposition, it'll catch up with you in the end. The US has a fundamentally weak defense, both aerially at CB, and down the flanks. It was exposed by almost every team they played, and as exciting as that can be if you make it work on the other end, it's not going to end up well.

I must say, part of it is just the coverage. The better the US do, the more stupid things I hear said about football on TV.

I'm afraid I don't quite see the logic here.

This is a team that has given passionate performances in practically World Cup its qualified;and I think that's a better barometer of whether a team should be respected or not. Whether or not the rest of the country is interested isn't relevant, this team clearly is.I for one will miss this American team, which is far more deserving of inclusion than some others I could name.

You don't live in the US, and hear bullshit about football spouted by the sports media and general public all the fucking time. Then every four years, if the US starts to seem like they are doing well, in addition to decent hardcore fans, you get an accumulation of bullshit that decide to watch the odd game. They want the US to do well, they crowd bars and say stupid things like "kick it harder" or "why haven't they scored yet" and then the normal media outlets decides to pick up on it. They then present it like they are all behind the US, that its the US, unfashionable upstarts against the world. The US are a decent side and have been for some time now, its the media that cast them as unfashionable, that same media, that have been deriding their sport for the last 3.9 years, that bother to cover them for a blink of an eye.

Of course the US deserved to be in the world cup, that's why they were there. I'm glad a team like the US went through while Italy went out. I still want them to lose to Ghana though, because faced with cringeworthy, hypocritical attention from the media and the large numbers of stupid supporters, or their almost totally ignoring the sport, leaving those like me in a nice little niche, I'd prefer the latter.

The sports growing anyway, mostly through attention to foreign leagues, US involvement in said leagues, and the MLS as a feeder league. That arrangement, no matter how successful for now, is just not something that the US media likes to wrap its heads around. It's not befitting an empire, and it's the opposite of every other sport the US is interested in.

The US showed a bit of desire and energy against us and Algeria (didn't see them against Slovenia), but tonight they were rather lethargic. Ghana themselves were very quiet at times throughout, and left space just waiting to be exploited. Had the US took the game by the balls it could have turned out very differently.

I think they were understandably exhausted, and it didn't help that they were sent out with a poor formation and only really got going in the second half.

I do think they could seriously benefit from a more knowledgeable manager. A better manager could have done something in that game to at least it make it look like they could and would.

and now Americans 'don't even care' ... Right, and the next story I'll hear is how the great 1st tier athletes in Basketball never lose to small countries, like Argentina for example, that send their 3rd tier athletes to play the game.

LOL!

Agreed. USA played with passion. More than some teams during this WC.

Shame they have gone out. If they progress further, it might take USA by storm and create a new generation of world beaters, who knows.

I can see both sides of this. You and Avvy have a point, but I too have had to deal with some of what Farky describes and it can be annoying, even on the very infrequent basis on which I've encountered it.

The USA could win the world cup, and it wouldn't have a very significant impact on viewership and level of interest in the game. It has enjoyed steady, moderate growth, mostly on the back of interest in the premiership and champions league. The world cup hasn't had any significant impact on it that I've seen reported, even when the US hosted the thing.

don't remember when you moved to the US fark, but i remember the '98 world cup so well (I moved after the '94 one) and how all my HS was trying to tell me how good the US was blah blah blah and how 'US Soccer will rule the world'. They were shit then, lost all 3 games but that helped develop my utter disdain for the US and their 'footy establishment'. So many fans I saw on my FB page and most of them were like, "Oh well, real football starts in 49 days now" ... They're a good solid team, and they are great hosts for the even too, but I loathe them ...
