Wayne Rooney

Ferguson likes a gamble, and at 30m for a teenager, one could argue it was one of his biggest.

That said, it's been obvious to anyone who knows a player that Rooney was sheer quality from the start

Did he benefit from playing out wide, or would he have always been this good?
He would have always been this good I think. I think he was just farmed out to the wing to do a shift for the team while Ronaldo did his thing.

I have a mate who thinks he's rubbish. And is still persisting with his assertion even now.

Yeh he's well shit.. I mean he can't tackle, or head the ball, or finish.. and he's slow as fuck.. I'd rather have N'Gog..

Ha Jimmy, it wasn't me who said it!

Yeah I see what you mean SG, maybe it has benefitted his overall game, who knows. His overall game was pretty phenomenal already, mind you.

He was always this good. He was just over shadowed by Ronaldo.

Never a doubt in my mind that the cunt was a footballing genius dating back to his Everton days.

Whilst it's difficult to argue Ferguscum was an idiot for playing him out of position (given the triple titles) I think only a blind man may argue where his true best position is.

And we have signed a player comparable to Rooney at the same age - according to good judges. Whats the betting he never sees his potential at LFC?

probably about the same as theo walcott turning out as good as thierry henry for arsenal.

still, i know what you mean.

its interesting but in a recent interview Rooney himself commented that most of his goals have been close range tap ins or unchallenged headers, his movement has been his most noticeable improvement this season and has been the reason he has bagged so many. Not many of them have been long range or required him to beat a couple of players before hand

He has been a fucking monster this season though

Just seen Messi destroy Valencia with a hatrick, at 22 hes 3 years younger than Rooney and for my money the best player on the planet

Rooney is playing really well. Personally I wouldn't mind him getting a little groin strain to give him a few weeks off pre South Africa.
Anyway it seems Fergie has got the best of him with a really simple tactic of having him break higher up the pitch and just keep getting quality deliveries in the box. Berbatov is playing really well (as is carrick) and if he isn't flicking little through balls over the top, he's spraying perfect balls out wide for Valencia and Nani who are playing really quick balls in for Rooney to run onto. Very simple but the delivery is so good and the movement so hard to track that it's almost unplayable
I really hope Capello looks at this for England, because hyperbole aside, it is getting the very best out of Englands very best player.
I don't want him playing in the hole behind heskey. If we had a Berbatov, Bergkamp, Sheringham type player it would be fucking epic, but we don't really, so for me it has to be Gerrard playing in the hole, with our two best crossers out wide and (for me) Barry and Carrick holding.
James
cole
terry
rio
Johnson

carrick
Barry

downing
gerrard
young

Rooney.

Or summink like that.

Rooney has really exploded this season from potentially one of the worlds best forwards into actually being one.

However I'd like to see him do it next season before proclaiming he is as good as some media people make him out to be.

Currently though the lad is on fire and unplayable.

I think Heskey will play.
Yeah me too. My hope is that he gives Rooney up top 1 game before the world cup and it works and he goes with it.
Fantasy I know.

He's been phenomenal in the air this season. Ferguson has hit the nail on the head with his tactics and Nani is unfortunately starting to fulfill his potential.
Plus Valencia has been somewhat of an inspired signing because he has been exactly what Rooney needs. 5 goals and 7 assists, I think 6 of his assists are to Rooney or something ridiculous like that.

I think Heskey will go too. Which really irks me. Carlton Cole can do everything Heskey can do with the added bonus of scoring goals (and staying on his fucking feet). Having someone who plays in a forward position at international level who can't score goals is not a good thing.

Well it'll all depend on the results and performances of the first few games I suppose. Like you, I'd have Carrick in there if things do require a change. He's the best passer of a ball in England, and I've completely changed my view on him over the last few years.

Yeah, Carrick's very underrated, as was/is Fletcher.

Carrick's price-tag has haunted him to a degree, but he's been crucial to United's recent successes and has a great eye for a forward pass. Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez would have loved playing with him.

He's having a better season than Barry.

Fletcher is second only to Rooney in importance to that United side.

He's been the best midfielder in the League all season long beside Fabregas.

Carrick's a quality player. He'd get more plaudits if he wasn't such a laid back, quiet fella.

Fletcher's been outstanding this season, model of consistency.

I wouldn't go quite that far.

Barry has been great for City and Spurs are in the thick of it for a top 4 spot largely because their midfield has been unexpectedly strong. Modrick, when he's been given options up front, has been very, very good.

All that said, Fletcher has been tremendous for them - he doesn't do anything exceptionally well but he does everything very well; I actually think it's because he doesn't do anything brilliantly that he's been so brilliant if that makes sense. He doesn't try to do the star show because he knows he can't do it - the result is he keeps doing everything very well and brings out the best in his team mates.

Ok, let me rephrase.

Heskey is shit. We should try and avoid using up valuable squad places with shit players. Carlton Cole is better. We should take him.

And yes, I am aware of the win stats when Heskey is in the team.

Carlton Cole didn't even start for West Ham on Saturday mate.

I'm sure you could counter by showing me the amount of times Heskey hasn't started for Villa this season, but Heskey's in the England squad and doesn't need to prove himself to Capello, Cole does.

FWIW, I quite like Cole. He's improved greatly.

Heskey's a certain starter in SA in my opinion. Capello loves him, and I can see why.

I think heskey would have lost his place in the team if gerrard has excelled in the forward position as he did last season but let's be honest here, he (gerrard) hasn't.

Gerrard and Rooney as a forward combo wouldn't work anyway Neil.
