What has he got to prove? He plays for one of the big sides, has been one of their key players more or less since joining, won titles at home and in Europe.
He isn't at the level of at the level of Torres/Messi/Ronaldo/young Henry, etc; players at the very, very top of the game, players who can single-handedly bring trophies to the club.

He's a world-class player no doubt, however I don't believe he's amongst the very, very best. But he could be, and that's what I think he's got left to demonstrate.

Rooney is pure quality. How many players are there who would get into any side in the World? He is one.

real madrid? barca?

How can he demonstrate that though? What more can he do?

He's not the type of player that will produce brilliant solo efforts or magic pieces of skill and I doubt that is going to change.

Goals, goals, and more goals. All those players mentioned have smashed in 30-40 goals a season at some point. Rooney consistently hovers around the 20 mark in all comps.

There's more emphasis on him producing this year, though, and so far he's been delivering.

I still think Tevez is better than Rooney.

Both are ugly twats and great footballers though...
there's no way on this planet that Tevez is better than Rooney.

Sorry, but I'm just not having that.

Because it is complete bollocks.

All the pre-season talk of him taking on the mantle of United's main man seems a bit hollow now.
An early season goal spurt including goals at home to Birmingham and City, 2 goals against a hapless Wigan side, a penalty against Arsenal and a goal at Spurs when they were already 2-1 up and Spurs were chasing the game. Since then he has failed to score against Stoke, Sunderland & Liverpool.

Sunday was a game where United were below par and needed their big players to step up and produce a performance for them. He was played up front as the striker and apart from one tame header and the through ball for Owen, he did fuck all.

Obviously he is a good player, on his day, a great player. But can he step up to the plate and be the main creative/goal scoring force for United that Ronaldo was? Can he lead the line the way Torres does for us?

Barca would squeeze him in somewhere. Real, you must be joking, he'd walk into that team.

7 goals in 9 appearances this season, Stu. You can't downplay that.

Early indications are he is stepping up to the mark now Ronaldo has left.

I don't see it that way Squiggs.
In the league he has scored 6 from 10.
One at home to Birmingham, who are shit. 2 away to Wigan, who are shit.
A penalty against Arsenal, a goal against Tottenham when they were chasing the game. And one against City on a day when they conceded four.

My point is he wanted to be the main man for them.
Step up into the limelight as their main star.
He has scored some goals against some poor teams a la Ronaldo, but he has not become the talisman he hoped he would. Early doors of course btu I would bet that when United have to play a solid team away from home again this season, whether it be in Europe or the League, that Rooney will be deployed as a wide player again.

I just see it the other way, mate; goals are goals and 3 points are 3 points, regardless of context.

He's also not helped by playing for arguably the least talent United side in the last 7-10 years.

Considering the quality which left their attack this summer I think he's doing a good job for them. Like United themselves this season, he's been efficient but not flashy.

True, goals win games.
I do rate Rooney, he is a class player.
It will be interesting to see how he copes as the main goal getter in that side.
Especially when we get to the business end of the season.

That post is terrible on about 13 levels.

The only problem I have with Rooney (other than him being a twat) is that he is the by-product of the English mentality.... that is, he over works himself in every game.

There is too much needless backtracking and "getting stuck in" as you English put it.

It's great to see commitment from a player - but don't forget, Rooney is a striker ... he should be up front on defenders - but you find him more often dropping deep far too much.

He is effective dropping deep, but he should not be doing as much as he is.

If I'm reading this right, it's an Australian giving Wayne Rooney and English football fans a lesson in how to play football.
