Watford

I know Watford are above us, we've had a few really disappointing results, and there's no easy games(cliché alert) yaddy ya....but from the media to fans it's like we're playing fucking Barca, Sunday.

We've had a full week's training to prepare for this, and I don't really mean to be disrespectful here but it's still little old Watford. We ought to be battering them.
Not quite as simple as that, but still.

Don't worry we will batter them by winning 1-0.

So, looks like Bogdan tomorrow then.
Good luck to him. Hope he has a great game and stays in the side.

No Simon Mignolet against Watford tomorrow. The goalkeeper has suffered a light hamstring injury. #lfc

Thing is, Bogdan is unlikely the answer anyway.

It's a bit like when folk were wanting Brad Jones in for Mignolet even though he's the worst excuse of a keeper I've ever seen. Granted Bogdan looks a safer pair of hands, but he's no long-term Liverpool no.1...

Whilst I agree on your #1 premise, I don't remember Brad Jones letting us down (did he ?) and Bogdan hasn't in his few appearances either. I'd rather have a Steady Eddie keeper with good distribution, where you pretty much know what your going to get (and the defence knows what they need to do to cover him), than the enigmatic Ming.

Brad Jones seemed to jump out of the way of the ball on a number of times at Old Trafford last season. Brad Jones was absolutely gash. At least Bogdan seems competent at playing in goal.

Sakho has to play instead of Toure.Even if he's 70% fit. Midfield 3 of Can, Henderson and Lucas. Forward 3 of Lallana, Coutinho and Fermino.

Some of the moans about Ming are a bit like people complaining about the weekly performance of firefighters at a hostel for arsonists. I still think the problem won't seem as great if we deal with other problems in front of him.

Football fans need something to complain about... just to show how much our genius is under appreciated..😀

Ming has been poor on occasion, with some unforced errors; against West Brom and Bourdeoux (sp.).. those had nothing whatsoever to do with the defence.

It's the first time Klopp has had a week so I expect a win but saying same old Watford is silly. They are nothing like the old Watford we know. They could easily get a result. No easy games anymore. Look at West Ham and Palace

As I pointed out about those uncritically accepted stats the other day, there's almost always a basis for contesting that assumption. And Grobbelaar's punditry conveniently forgets that when he was doing all the many things he wants Ming to do, he caused so much chaos in the box he was close to being binned (he only settled and started looking good once the defence taught him to leave most things to them). Look, I'm no fan of Mignolet, I'll be delighted if we get a better keeper, but don't expect a better keeper to look that much better in this side before the defence learns how to defend better at set pieces.

It's rare I disagree with you macca, but I see it the other way.

I think the defence plays badly at least partly because they have no confidence in their keeper, I think if they get someone behind them who behaves consistently & they trust it'll make a huge difference.

Yeah, lack of communication is a big problem. And I dont think the defence trusts Ming. He rarley comes out for a cross, punches the ball instead catching it and seems uncertain about what decision to make.

I don't think Ming comes out for crosses less often than most other keepers – I believe he is actually leading the league in punches clear (but is in the bottom half in claims). You can't rely on the keeper to get every cross – best teams have at least one aerially dominant defender (Pique, Ramos, Boateng, Terry etc) who attacks most crosses into the box and only leaves it when the goalkeeper shouts that he can claim it. We will continue to be vulnerable to set pieces and crosses until we get a player like that. And we are actually over-relying on Mignolet coming out for balls he can't catch (and therefore has to punch) to compensate for this weakness of our defense.

This is where I believe the likes of Matip and Subotic could help us a lot. I spent the past 20 minutes looking at stats on Squawka – turns out Lovren is the only defender in our team who is consistently over 70% in winning headed duels. Skrtel is usually hovering around 65%, Sakho 60% or less (a bit of a problem, even though I like Sakho). Matip is at 74% this season and finished at amazing 76% in one of his previous seasons. Subotic normally wins around 70%. If we had 2 CBs with these kinds of numbers (as Klopp had in his previous team with Hummels also scoring 70%), we would not have to rely on a goalkeeper rushing off his line to contest for every high ball and I think the defense would look a lot less panicky as a result.

Mignolet punching isn't an issue. Reina used to punch the ball out & it led to many many quick goals that we scored on the counter.

The problem is Mignolet can't do it well, doest do it consistently, & doesn't plough through the opposition to do it.

His distribution is also a fucking disgrace & puts pressure on players cos he gives it to them when they're tightly marked or have no open pass available, & his kicks aren't very accurate nor that powerful.

Some of those problems in front of him are caused by the issues behind them though.

Bogdan seems so much better with his distribution and so much more in control (and confident) than Ming. Despite some of Ming's superb reflex saves. Though there may not be much between them I'm happy to see Bogdan between the posts today.

.

Well, I don't want this to go on and on, but, with all due respect, that isn't NOT what I said. The key word is 'some'. My point was against simplistic either/or analysis.

From the defence in front of him and whole team really to the fans in the stand, Mignolet spreads panic and fear. It's actually a wonderful gift.

Hate to be cruel as he comes across as a really nice bloke and a mate met him walking around Liverpool One not long after he signed for us and said he was great with him but that's the reality of the situation as far as his performances go.

One final time: if people want to depict an attempt at a more balanced analysis as uncritical indulgence, go ahead, have some team points. But if we bring in a better keeper and people expect him to look as solid as he did at whatever club we signed him from...prepare for a shock.

Back in September I said of Mignolet: I think we should keep the ball away from him by:
a) keeping the ball up the other end
b) defending properly when we lose the ball
c) not involve him in tippy tappy sessions across the box before inevitably lumping it.

I haven't changed my mind and I agree no 'keeper we have or we bring in will look solid if we continue to play defensively as we are. Any 'keeper is going to be jittery if he sees that sort of performance in front of him.

Leicester City will have a field day unless we maintain concentration and are ready to battle.
