I suppose this is encouraging in some ways, but I also find it really worrying:

Rafa Benitez hailed the spirit among injury-troubled stars like Steven Gerrard following our 2-0 derby victory on Sunday.
Gerrard played a full 90 minutes once again despite a lack of training in recent weeks due to a groin problem.

Yossi Benayoun, Glen Johnson, Albert Riera, Daniel Agger and Fabio Aurelio also all featured following injuries.

Benitez said: "Gerrard has found it hard. He has played three difficult games in a row without training for three weeks prior, and that is tough.

"People have to understand that some players are trying very hard to help the team when they are not really fit. But they want to play, and their attitude is very positive.

"Now we have a week of training, and I hope we will see a lot more of them fitter for the next game."

The boss added: "There are several players who maybe should not be out there at the moment. They are not fully fit, they are not training and they have injuries.

"But we are working so hard together. We are seeing players involved when they should really be on the treatment table.

"But they all wanted to play, to do a job for the team and to work to get us going again as a team."

Fernando Torres failed to recover in time for the Goodison clash with a groin problem of his own - and Benitez is monitoring the striker's fitness ahead of next week's trip to Blackburn.

He added: "Fernando is close, but he still has some pain. We now have a week to work with him and for the physios to try to get him fit to play.

"We will monitor this every day and then decide. But we do not want to take any risks with him now, he needed three weeks of treatment and that is not fully completed yet.

"There is no deadline. We will have to decide after we have watched him working this week."

Should have just had the operation and cleared it up once and for all. He probably would have been back in the same period of time as this latest round of treatment. Now there's a chance he could break down again and need it later on in the season.

I'm not sure. Sometimes operations in this area can be less reliable in the long-term than careful treatment designed to overcome the original causes. If it is actually a so-called sportsman's hernia then I think it's accurate to say that the consensus these days is to explore all non-operative possibilities first.

Rafa's obviously not very good at counting. Torres hasn't played in almost 4 weeks now.

Maybe they didn't start the treatment for a few days.

You all seem to be missing the point. Half of our players are playing with injuries. Isn't there a serious risk that they're going to hurt themselves even more, and be out for even longer?

I'm glad Torres is taking the advice of his Spanish doctor and giving his injury time to rest, and that he's not been rushed back. My worry is that the rest of them are sacrificing their long-term health for short-term gains - basically because Rafa doesn't trust their back-ups.

You are being a little harsh there. Three of the names mentioned (Aurelio, Benayoun and Riera) are left side midfield and Babel is injured there - we are looking deep into the backups to replace all of them - and they've only been subs anyway until Aurelio yesterday. As for Stevie - well Spearing and Plessis have had their chance.

It's kind of a known thing though, isn't it?

You can tell Gerrard and Johnson aren't quite right during the games, whilst we've done our best to rush Yossi and Riera back from injury.

Kelly has ankle issues, and Degen has so many injuries they all cancel out, excpet when the full moon is out.
