Not only a top, top player in his own right but an inspiration to all around him. Matip in particular has improved massively and IMO was his equal last night.
It'd be tough for him to win it whilst Messi is still gracing us with his gift, but he defo is deserving of a place in the top 3 for sure, maybe hard to argue second. BTW those Sky ratings were interesting, despite people saying we played poorly and Spurs edging the stats and dominating possession, they gave our 13 players (one unrated) 87 points (ave 6.69) vs Spurs 13 players (one unrated) 74 points (ave. 5.69).

Who else would get it though? Messi lost to us, Ronaldo was knocked out of at the quarters, Mbappe was fucked by a poor united side, can't think of any other big names that shone any brighter.
I think he should get it. But don't think he will. He's not a sexy choice really for anyone outside of reds supporters. Messi will probably win it.

His individual stats are remarkable. The fact he somehow improves the likes of Lovren, Gomez, and Matip to look like brilliant, assured defenders is something else.
I remember arguing one defender will never transform this defense and therefore waiting for VVD, when other good CB's were available, wouldn't be worth it. But he's proven me wrong and then some. It's remarkable how good he is. The perfect modern CB and maybe one of the best of all time.

It's an annual award not an end of season award though isn't it ? So Jan to Dec 2019 ? Let's see how the rest of the year goes. I've heard that the Nations Cup (NL) and Messi's goal record in Spain and CL could be factors but across the forums VvD is the favourite.
On the contrary, he seems to be a VERY popular choice.
He doesn't play for Real or Barca though. And there's another 6 months left. He should get it, but I won't hold my breath.

Pretty much across the different club forums mate. I think everyone realises how special he's been. It's voted for by journos too, they should be a little more discerning than your average biased fan.
