VVD and Gomez

Dijkmez ? GoDijk ?

Who cares .... but I want to see the partnership continue to blossom so we get to the point where we think of them in the same we remember Hyypia and Carragher together (Lawro and Hansen for the old timers).

I had concerns about Gomez at centre back because he seemed to misread high balls too often leading to dangerous chances being given away. He seems to have improved on that and for me he remains the best defender we have for dealing with one on one situations against attackers in possession.

VVD has quickly become our most important player. I think we would miss him more from the team than any other individual. He dominates aerial battles, calmly leads the defence and is just a brilliant all round defender. You could pair him with anybody in the centre of defence and he could make it work.

But him and Joe Gomez are for me easily the best combination we have at centre back. Defensively they dovetail perfectly - Gomez's one weakness, aerial ability, is one of VVD's strengths. And Gomez has a level of acceleration, agility and pace that he can cover VVD if he ever gets caught out defending higher up the pitch.

Gomez still has improvements to make but in the short and long term I want to see him continue in the centre at Matip and Lovren's expense.

And Gomez has actually looked pretty good in the air so far, although he's never going to be as dominant as Virgil. But it's a wonderful-looking partnership, yes, with a great blend of physicality, pace and technique.

Great that they're both good passers too, and Gomez is a boss tackler.

Vs PSG, highest top speed including both teams was clocked by VVD. How the hell does he look so relaxed running at high speed?
Then we’ve got Gomez who seems to have wonderful acceleration.

Great combination. Seriously doubted Gomez’s ability as CB for precisely the same reason as Rosco mentioned. He’s been brilliant.

They have both been excellent, and we should let that partnership blossom. Our back 5 could stay the same for a number of years.
Van Dijk’s pace/recovery pace isn’t spoken about enough though and is one of his many underrated qualities. Reached a higher top speed than Neymar, Mbappé, Mané and Salah on Tuesday night and clocked in 32.4 km/hr.

Isnt Gomez the fastest player in the squad?*

Dunno, but it's great that Klopp has recognised the fact that all top teams require pace in almost every position, and we've moved on from the fucking crabs of recent memory, and instead have Gomez, Robbo, TAA, Keita, Mane, Salah, Virgil etc.

If their early season form continues throughout the season, I think it's going to be time that people recognise them as the best partnership in the league, yes even over Alderweireld and Cuntonghen, maintaining this level over a season will be very difficult though.

Theyve been sensational so far but at various points in the season we will see them play alongside other CBs and then we might get a sense of whether Gomez has really come on as far as it appears or whether he only looks that good playing alongside VVD. Ive always been a big fan of Gomez and if he can go this season without serious injury then it will be very hard to dislodge him from the first team.

Worth bearing in mind Lovren looked great beside Van Dijk in the 2nd half of last season. He just has that authority and composure that lets the players around him play their best football.
