Vorm

Yes. He seemed to lose his nerve against the mancs in one match and seemed doomed after that, but what a fine keeper he later proved himself to be. Actually he wouldn't be a bad free signing for a season if we really did want a back up keeper alongside Jones (he might become a decent coach as well).

Agree about Brad Friedel in particular. Too many people, then and now, said/say he was "not good enough" but I never saw it like that. The team usually looked more secure to me when he played than when he didn't. IMO he was a victim of the overall confusion and drift in LFC at that time.

Sadly I was one of the people who was criticising him when he first came into the team. I'm going to blame my youthful naivety for my poor judgement and lack of patience.

Friedel definitely suffered from our defence being poor. He also joined at the tail end of Evans tenure, when he was experimenting with a 4-4-2 formation instead of his normal 5-3-2 in some matches in order to stop us conceding so many stupid goals.

I doubt that very much
Why? He's worked with vorm before so he knows what he offers already. So maybe based on what he's seen of mignolet last season he sees vorm as a improvement. Rodgers has shown on many occasions that he has no problem regardless of the fee of dropping or selling you if you don't perform.

Because he would have spent 9 mill on him last year if that was the case.
Ming will be first choice next season imho.

Good keeper who'll likely do more than just settle for being a number two and provide proper competition for Mignolet.

He won't sign for us just to keep the bench Vorm.

I saw a game this season - can't remember who it was against, maybe City or Chelsea - and he was rubbish. Think Swans fans were saying on their forum that he's been poor since returning from injury.

People seemed forever to be banking on James' potential too, that he would eventually eradicate the moments of madness, which of course never ever came to pass. I don't think Brad was charismatic enough a keeper for the fans, he seemed at the time like a steady-Eddie goalie, which was probably exactly what we needed, but we had this skewed view of what we considered to be fitting for Liverpool, and his face at the time just didn't sit right compared to the image bollocks that was going on.

It's down to needs vs musts.. I'd rather have a capable attacking player than a goalie who never plays for us.

I understand your point, but we're not in a position to afford that luxury.

It's necessary in a squad that's challenging on all fronts. With someone like lallana or konoplyanka coming in means one if not two of Suarez, Sterling, Sturridge, Borini or Coutinho and the aforementioned will be on the bench every week. Now that's a luxury. Luxury is something we havent had for a while.
But at the end of the day it's really what you perceive we need versus what I do. I'd way prefer to have Vorm or Fabianski or someone of that quality as a luxury on the bench ahead of Jones coming in because its close to like for like with Migs(others may not agree). And if we're actively seeking one then it would suggest we can in fact afford that luxury. 97 million in TV money would also suggest that. Its all well and good having adequate attacking cover but if a defence that shipped a half century of goals last season becomes weaker due to a keeper injury then we're in trouble. The saving grace is that it seems we are in fact looking at both positions as well as the other ones that need strengthening. Happy days!! 🙂

Agree with this, its obvious really, theres a decent chance Vorm would be our number 1 straight from the off, if not then he would get his chance as soon as Mig starts cocking up again, thing with Vorm is hes not much good under the high ball either, he does at least come off his line and try though.

Vorm isnt an improvement though and he's been injury plagued the last season.

Strange signing if it happens.

How many important games have backup GK's played for us in the last decade?

How much in fees and wages have we paid for them?

I have absolutely no doubt that backup GK's are the biggest waste of money in football. The ultimate luxury. We have far more pressing needs, whatever you think about Vorm

Indeed.

Can someone also explain to me why World Cup Squads always contain 3 goalkeepers too?? What the fuck is the point in wasting a valuable squad place on a 3rd goalkeeper? Has a 3rd choice keeper ever played a game at a World Cup?

I have a memory that says it used to be two goalies and a squad of 21. Squad size was increased to 22 specifically to accommodate a third goalie

The need to use several goalkeepers is rare – in 1990 the 24 teams used a total of 27 keepers, while as recently as 1998 the 32 sides in France used a combined 36. In all, only four teams have ever used three goalkeepers in a single World Cup tournament. That's out of 371 teams to have qualified for the finals – surely time for Fifa to change the rules.

First to use a trio of keepers were France in 1978. The No1 was Jean-Paul Bertrand-Demanes who played in Les Bleus' opening game against Italy. In the second group game against Argentina, Bertrand-Demanes smashed either his back or head (it varies between reports) on a post after pulling off a save and had to be replaced by Dominique Baratelli, a 31-year-old who had made sporadic appearances since 1969. He conceded the winning goal against Argentina and was replaced for France's final group game by Dominique Dropsy. The game against Hungary was Dropsy's debut and he would go on to win another 16 caps. Neither Baratelli nor Bertrand-Demanes would ever play for the national side again.

Belgium went into the 1982 tournament with the eccentric (he served a three-month ban in 1980 after elbowing a linesman in a Belgian Cup match) but hugely talented Jean-Marie Pfaff as their first choice. Pfaff had been welcomed, somewhat apprehensively, back to the fold after missing the 1978 European Championships because of his practical joking, but he couldn't keep his inner comedian under wraps. He was dropped following the first group stage after apparently pretending to drown in the swimming pool at the team hotel. His replacement in Belgium's opening game in the second group stage was Theo Custers, whose performance against Poland was so abject it was his last ("Custers's last stand," notes the World Cup historian Cris Freddi). For the Belgian's final game Jacky Munaron took the gloves.

Also in 1982, Czechoslovakia used three keepers. Zdenek Hruska played from start to finish against Kuwait, but Stanislav Seman was preferred for the Czech's game against England. A calamitous performance – it would be his last for the national side – lasted 75 minutes before he broke a finger and was replaced by third-choice Karel Stromsik, who kept the No1 spot for the final group game.

The most recent team to use three goalkeepers in a single tournament were the hapless Greece side of 1994. The Greeks had gone undefeated through qualifying and named the experienced Antonis Minou, who had conceded only twice in five qualifiers, as No1 for the opening game against Argentina. A 4-0 defeat saw 25-year-old AEK keeper Elias Atmatsidis in goal against Bulgaria. Another 4-0 defeat followed and he was replaced by 24-year-old Christos Karkamanis for the final group game. That brought a slight improvement in fortunes – a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria.

The rules say you have to take 3. Bizarre but there it is.

Will he be able to vorm his way out of his current contract?

Best ever name for a goalie! Fact!

Kinda cute, actually.

Have we actually been linked to Vorm by anywhere credible? I don't trawl through the internet that much for transfer rumours but I haven't seen him mentioned as a possible signing anywhere.

Well every team has 2 for each game, 1 on the field, one on the bench. So if a goalkeeper gets banned or hurt you'd need a third for the next game.
