Seems that rumours about us trying to get him as backup GK are gaining momentum. Surely we have other priorities? And number of games aside, will this really be an improvement / upgrade to what we currently have?

Yea, wouldn't make sense.

The 1 in 100 chance that we might need him to step up isn't worth the probable 6/7m he'll cost.

Wrong type of back up keeper. 5 mill fee and decent wages. Doesnt make sense at all

I don't understand this so called competition for the number 1 keeper..

Mig's a pro, he, nor we, need to spend millions on fee's and wages to have a glorified reserve 'challenging' him.

Let an U21/U19 keeper have that spot. If shit goes down we can be all like 'emergency loan yo!'

Rodgers has already said he's looking at a keeper. It's no surprise Vorm has been linked given their Swansea connection. And we do need a new number 2, Jones isn't good enough.

People keep saying that on here, but he was in the Carling Cup-winning team under Kenny and didn't let anybody down. I also read somewhere that he's not going to be sold, so it doesn't look as though Rodgers shares the general 6CM view about him.

Jones is good enough for a back-up, but not good enough to give some pressure and competition to Mignolet. I think Rodgers wants the latter. Mignolet needs to be pushed to eradicate some "holes" in his game.

Vorm won't 'challenge' Mignolet by sitting on the bench every week. I never get the idea that, by taking a decent keeper and basically retiring him, you're improving your first choice keeper. It's a waste of wages and a waste of time. Imagine if it happened with an outfield player - 'Yeah, we're getting Ashley Cole to provide competition for Flanagan. Ashley probably won't play in any matches, apart from the early rounds of the Carling Cup, but his presence will really help Jon'. It's a collective delusion that there's any sense in the procedure, it's accepted simply because it's now 'how things are done'.

Maybe he sees vorm as a improvement on mignolet. Maybe by the time the season starts he sees vorm as his No.1.

Couldn't agree more with this.

I guess so, but I dread another situation like the Freidel/James/Hooper musical chairs of Souey's time. Rodgers needs to be really sure and decisive if he's going to make a change.

Friedel was signed by Evans

The league and FA cup are fine for Jones but what happens if Migs gets injured with big league and champs leagues games ahead? Then could we really get by with Jones and an under age keeper? Since Doni left we havent had that third option really. We need a squad with two players competing (including "multifuntional" players) for every position and Jones doesn't really offer competition to Migs. Fabianski is on a free as well having rejected Arsenals latest offer yesterday. A year younger than Vorm, he'd be worth a look imo. I'm not saying that Rodgers doesn't think Jones is good enough, only the man himself knows that but he has suggested that he will be looking at bringing in a keeper to add to what we already have.

We all obviously want the same thing, that being two class players in each position.

But the reality is that's not happening, and goalie is, or should be, the sacrificial lamb so to speak.

The odds on Mignolet getting injured vs Sturridge getting injured says it all

Really? The mind plays some strange tricks!

Yeah. We struggled to get a work permit for him, and when he did eventually come in he rotated with James. I think he was signed right at the end of Roys tenure, so it was Ged that eventually sold him when it became clear Sander was going to be no. 1.

Ah, thanks, I remember now. Souey tried to get him but as you say the work permit didn't come. I'm going to wake up soon! I can't help thinking with Mignolet that we'd be wiser to try getting a really top class goalkeeping coach in to work with him rather than lose faith at this stage.

That Shamrock Rovers game was integral to our season.

So what happens if Migs does his knee? Or breaks an arm. A lot of teams with 60 + games per season have two keepers that could fill the number one slot. Why should we be any different?

Also, a lot of players who will barely see the squad next season played in that game, and in other areas of the pitch than between the posts...A bit short sighted I think.

You'd never get a good youngster to do that (and it would be stupid to ask a good youngster to do that) as you'd be effectively minimising his chance of ever reaching his potential. He'd get no / few first team games and he'd get no / few reserve games as he'd be sitting on the bench.

Players like Jones are normally happy to sit on the bench as they've reached their full potential are unlikely to play at a top team as a number 1. He'll get a big pay check to play a couple of times per year, if a keeper gets injured or sent off during a game (or he has an agreement to play in the cups). In an ideal world we'd have a good youngster in reserve, that could be slotted into the first team if Ming was unable to start (but I don't think our current reserve youth keepers are ready or good enough).

Vorm has shown a lot more ability than Jones so I'd guess that he has been told that Ming's position is vulnerable, or he is worried that his recent injuries have made him lose some of his ability.

Agreed.

Most of our goalkeepers have taken a season to bed into the team, with even Reina having a dodgy initial season. If Liverpool had given Friedel enough time / support we could have had a great keeper for years (United did the same thing with Howard).

Mignolet has also shown signs of improvement throughout the season, having become a lot more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

It's down to needs vs musts.. I'd rather have a capable attacking player than a goalie who never plays for us.

I understand your point, but we're not in a position to afford that luxury.

Agree. Focusing on the weaker aspects of Ming's game can go too far at times. He saved us many more points than he ever lost us last season and IMO is well worth persevering with. Besides, we all seem to agree that the whole defensive set-up needs work and IMO, if we get that sorted, Ming will benefit significantly from our doing so.

Agree about Brad Friedel in particular. Too many people, then and now, said/say he was "not good enough" but I never saw it like that. The team usually looked more secure to me when he played than when he didn't. IMO he was a victim of the overall confusion and drift in LFC at that time.
