Perhaps Rodgers wants competition for Mignolet rather than backup.
Maybe he sees vorm as a improvement on mignolet. Maybe by the time the season starts he sees vorm as his No.1.Vorm won't 'challenge' Mignolet by sitting on the bench every week. I never get the idea that, by taking a decent keeper and basically retiring him, you're improving your first choice keeper. It's a waste of wages and a waste of time. Imagine if it happened with an outfield player - 'Yeah, we're getting Ashley Cole to provide competition for Flanagan. Ashley probably won't play in any matches, apart from the early rounds of the Carling Cup, but his presence will really help Jon'. It's a collective delusion that there's any sense in the procedure, it's accepted simply because it's now 'how things are done'.

Rodgers has already said he's looking at a keeper. It's no surprise Vorm has been linked given their Swansea connection. And we do need a new number 2, Jones isn't good enough.

I guess so, but I dread another situation like the Freidel/James/Hooper musical chairs of Souey's time. Rodgers needs to be really sure and decisive if he's going to make a change.
Friedel was signed by Evans
Really? The mind plays some strange tricks!

Yeah. We struggled to get a work permit for him, and when he did eventually come in he rotated with James. I think he was signed right at the end of Roys tenure, so it was Ged that eventually sold him when it became clear Sander was going to be no. 1.
That Shamrock Rovers game was integral to our season.
I don't understand this so called competition for the number 1 keeper..
Mig's a pro, he, nor we, need to spend millions on fee's and wages to have a glorified reserve 'challenging' him.
Let an U21/U19 keeper have that spot. If shit goes down we can be all like 'emergency loan yo!'
Ah, thanks, I remember now. Souey tried to get him but as you say the work permit didn't come. I'm going to wake up soon! I can't help thinking with Mignolet that we'd be wiser to try getting a really top class goalkeeping coach in to work with him rather than lose faith at this stage.
So what happens if Migs does his knee? Or breaks an arm. A lot of teams with 60 + games per season have two keepers that could fill the number one slot. Why should we be any different?
Also, a lot of players who will barely see the squad next season played in that game, and in other areas of the pitch than between the posts...A bit short sighted I think.

Agreed.
Most of our goalkeepers have taken a season to bed into the team, with even Reina having a dodgy initial season. If Liverpool had given Friedel enough time / support we could have had a great keeper for years (United did the same thing with Howard).
Mignolet has also shown signs of improvement through the season, having become a lot more comfortable with the ball at his feet throughout the season.
